Notes / Commercial Description:
Tropically Hoppy. Light, yet Full-Bodied. Bright and Citrusy. Word.

The magical, mystical 12th of Never is a blend of Old and New School hops that play bright citrus, rich coconut, and papaya-esque flavors, all on a solid stage of English puffed wheat. Tropically hoppy. Light, yet full-bodied. Bright and citrusy. The 12th of Never Ale is everything we’ve learned about making hop-forward beer expressed in a moderate voice. Pale, cold, slightly alcoholic and bitter. It’s all we know.

These 12oz mini-kegs (AKA cans) are an exciting new option for us, and we are stoopid stoked at the opportunity for y’all to take us to all those new, nelophobic locations…

When you're everywhere, then you're nowhere. Pulling from both the new and old, as it pertains to hops and malt, is Lagunitas' attempt to bring several generations of beer together in one seamless taste in order to refute that notion that when you're everywhere, then you're nowhere.

Bright straw and with a faint haze, the scent of melon, herb, citrus and pine align on the nose while its taste is softly sweet of cashew, biscuit, caramel and honey. All things equal, the flavors carry a slight less-than moderate play on the early palate.

With the taste traversing across the tongue, the sweetness quivers and the hops gain steam for a flavors of candied pink grapefruit, lemon, orange and papaya. Tropical pineapple, passionfruit and mango show an exotic flavor as the taste dives into a moderate bitterness of pine, citrus peel and herb.

Slightly dank, grassy and floral, the finish leaves a medium-dry sensation behind along with mulled herbs that linger onward. Supported with a light honey balance the flavors of brewing worlds colliding is realized. Though noble in its fellowship, the beer's "old world" character leaves it limited.

Can to mug, thin layer of foam, bright gold with rapid carb trails.
Aroma is pleasant, light fruity hop notes of mango and citrus peel.
Taste is lightly tropical, faint passionfruit and grapefruit. Light bitter astringency.
Light to medium bodied, dry bitter finish, easily drinkable.
For some reason though, not as enjoyable as fresh Sucks or Born Yesterday.

12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 7/29/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear pale golden yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, papaya, lemon/orange zest, light pine, wheat, cracker, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of bright/dank citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, papaya, lemon/orange zest, light pine, wheat, cracker, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, papaya, lemon/orange peel pine, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of bright/dank citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/sticky, and lightly grainy/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.5%. Overall this is a great American pale ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of bright/dank citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Appearance: Pours clear and golden, with a frothy head; webby lacing

Smell: Tropical fruit tones of papaya and pink grapefruit

Taste: Clean opening, with the hops providing the tropical fruit and citrus flavors through the middle; bright and floral, with moderate bitterness through the finish

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with crisp carbonation

Overall: Almost sessionable, this is a nice, bright APA

A: Pours a clear pale to medium golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and faint apricot colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall sudsy foamy off-white head that slowly reduces to a large patch of mottled medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer surrounded by a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of dank resinous and citrus/grapefruit hops over the top of light aromas of grainy malts.

T: Upfront there are light flavors of grainy malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of dank resinous and citrus/grapefruit hops which impart a light to moderate amount of bitterness which fades away pretty quickly.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Initially crisp but a hint thin/watery in the finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol, enjoyable, and refreshing - just shy of what I would call a session APA because of the ABV but I could easily enjoy a couple of these.

Lagunitas Brewing Co. "12th of Never Ale"
12 fl. oz. can, production coded but without freshness dating
$1.83 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Nice can; easy to spot on the shelf. Nice color to the beer: golden and just slightly hazy. Foamy bright white head. Bright aromas of pungent hop resins and tropical fruits. The flavor follows without so much of the resins and more citrus and other tropical fruits. The malt is almost secondary, and simply basic. I'm finding orange, peach, lemon, and pine. It's bright and refreshing, and only moderately bitter. What's the strength on this? 5.5% ABV, that's not bad. I'd rather have this than most "session IPAs" any day. The head has dropped but there's some nice lacing left behind. A 3.75 out of 5 in my book. Light-medium in body, or is that medium-light? Gently effervescent and bristling. Ah, the bitterness builds as you progress through it and lingers a bit in the finish. Overall quite nice. "Light" and refreshing. Loaded with hops. Well balanced. Nicely done. Really drinkable.
