Swing and a miss by Lagunitas. I have never experienced them striking out. Here comes that phrase.. its a "malt bomb", but with a twist, real dry finish but you really can't taste the hop character for some reason.
Looks great in the glass, dark gold, clear, micro bubbles rising from below, frothy head stays to the end albeit 1/8" on last sip.
Smell hints at the malt problem, but there is some off note interfering, pepper? Shellac? Maybe vodka given the potato ingredient!. I am arguing with myself.
Its not a drain pour. Maybe just not to my taste. Certainly not to style.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Lots of froth on top, clear tawny hue. A little orangey and herbal in the nose with a caramel sweetness and some ripe fruitiness. Malty, sweet, bready, grainy, toasty. Smooth palate, fullish body. Hint of broth, dark bread, caramel, and dried grass. A decent brew, different ... that is for sure.

Pours a brilliant dark copper, with tints of red and brown, and a two finger off white head that disappates quickly. Aroma is earth, pine, caramel, toffee. Taste follows with big earth and oak, with a very woody overall profile, coupled with light malt sweetness, and bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and smooth, mouthcoating, and just a touch oily. Overall, a very interesting version of an oktoberfest, hopped up for sure, while retaining a fairly easy drinking nature, and as always, that lagunitas house character.

This is by far the best Octoberfest/marzen I've ever had! That's because it's nobody's Octoberfest! It has the malt quality --sort of -- of a marzen: soft, a bit sweet, subtle carmel. But then lagunitas made it afterall, and they put a good bit of American hops in. It's got a dank side, hoppy nose, decent bitterness. All those lagunitas things that are good, but not a marzen. Drink this beer if you like different styles, hops, crafting, and more than a little cognitive dissonance. It's indeed a very unique beer. I really liked it. Kudos lagunitas!

Caramel colors mixed with fiery orange and a bit of tootsie roll in the shadows. The head is 3 fingers, leaves lace on the sides.

What the fuck. It smells like grapefruits, tangerines, and caramel.

Taste... where are the Marzen qualities? There's hardly a hint of fall in this beer. It tastes like a signature Lagunita's caramel-malted IPA wrought with onion, pine, grapefruit, coffee, and toffee. Roast malts seem to be hinted at but nary a sample here. A touch of brazen malts.

Feel is creamy and carbonated. Dry finish.

Do you like A Little Sumpin' Sumpin? How about Brown Shugga? You'll love this, because it's the same damn beer. This is basically another Lagunitas' IPA with a new label. I mean...what the hell? Is that the only thing they're good at? Elementary.

On the neck of the bottle, printed in black, there is a date code: "257 6 2 1416 2230" which appears to be September 14th.

Appearance: It has a very nice orange-brown body that has very good clarity. the head is good sized, fluffy, and eggshell white. Good lacing and head retention.

Aroma: It has a fairly strong onion and garlic aroma. Not very characteristic to the standard Oktoberfest but that should be expected. It has a bit of rye bread aroma too. The hop selection is a far cry from the noble hop aromas found in traditional beers of this type, but it smells fresh.

Taste: It has a nice bread crust and grainy flavor with just a touch of toast and a lot of that savory herb garlic hop flavor. Honestly it tastes awesome.

Mouthfeel: The beer feels very thick, a bit chewy, and at times too slick. It just isn't an easy drinking beer.

Overall: I'll get this out of the way right now and say that if you like Oktoberfestbiers and are looking for one, just skip this beer altogether. If you are looking for a hoppier take on the traditional Oktoberfest, skip it too. This doesn't drink like an Oktoberfest in any way, shape, or form. However it is a very good beer that is very flavorful. If you just want a hoppy beer that isn't very bitter but packs a ton of flavor and freshness in a bottle then get it.

Modernizing the Octoberfest beer and re-proportioning it more like IPA, Lagunitas' malty lager forgoes the subtle and balancing hops for an aggressive, spicy, woodsy and floral hop-forward taste.

Glowing bronze and amber, the bright beer carries a creamy and dense froth and a herbal potpourri of spice and wood. Cantaloup, citrus and orchard fruit shows a part-hop, part-ester profile. Its taste is juicy with malt sweetness- caramel, honey, biscuit and cashew greeting the initial palate.

The middle palate shows an even-keel balance as the juiciness of malt relaxes and its elegant nutty, honey-like flavor dissolves into bready pound-cake likeness. Then the growing hops are releases from the floral duties and its broad and spicy bitterness is indeed cedar, balsa and sassafras-like. Hints of marmalade and toasted sweetness evolve deep in its taste.

Finishing medium-bodied, creamy and with a bittersweet taste, the hops pull through slightly as they outlast the malts late on the palate and into the throat. Pine and grapefruit trail into a spicy, lightly tannic closure. Mild alcohol warmth and toasted pound cake return in in gently rolling waves.

Poured one and a half bottles into a half liter stein, poured a rich deep bronze with a thick creamy off white head atop.Aromas were a little strange to me,grainy with a hefty fruitiness, some big leafy hops come into play as well.Caramel and fruit upfront on the palate, slightly bready with a mild spiciness in the finish. This is different than most O-fests I have had, just a few little quirks. Not bad.

A reddish brown translucent copper color. Smells and taste of caramel (burnt) malts and earth and wooden notes. A nice octoberfests offering. Would definitely buy it again.

I have no problem with Lagunitas bastardizing traditional styles, as I loved Doppel Sticke and Stoopid Wit, but this simply doesn't mesh well. There are some Marzen malt qualities and some typical Lagunitas hop qualities, but the mix is somehow both watery and cloying at the same time.

Dark copper in color with excellent clarity. There's an inch of creamy beige foam on top that subsides to a fingernail after a few minutes. There's a subtle light malt note on the nose. I'm tasting a very malty beer that finishes very sweet. I can definitely taste that cedarlike note from the hops and it seems a bit out of place. The mouth is very dry, smooth and crisp.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Lagunitas mason jar.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: A toasty and herbal balanced aroma of caramel malt and piney hops. Sweet malt scent of caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, and cracker with yeast. Earthy and floral hops with some herbal hints of pine resin and grass. Some light citrus hints of orange, grapefruit, and tangerine. A pretty solid balanced aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a toasty, sweet, and herbal taste of caramel malt and piney hops. Sweet and bready malt notes of caramel, toffee, biscuit, cracker, and grains along with some lager yeast. Herbal and earthy hop notes of pine resin and grass. Light citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange peel, and tangerine. A very solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, fairly oily, and smooth.

Overall: A pretty nice twist on an Oktoberfest style Lager. Nice sweet caramel malt with a solid balance of piney hops. Far from a traditional Marzen but pretty nice.

12 oz 2016 bottle.
Clear copper body with a short head with poor retention and limited lacing.
This is a rather hoppy and strong (ABV) version of the style, with mild bitterness rather than light sweetness.
Faint toffee. Well hidden alcohol.

No tubers harmed in the making of this beer?

DATE: September 29, 2016... OCCASION: Thirsty Thursday again... GLASSWARE: crystal mug... dark amber, almost brown orange body with some turbulent bubbles rising... a two-finger white head sits strongly before thinning to a creamy, swirling head... first scents of rosewood, coriander, lemon, and a mega-powerful load of caramel... a medium-bodied sip that tickles the teeth and resounds at the throat... for 7.5%, an unbelievably agreeable lager whose consistency begs for immediate consumption... flavor is as promised, with the caramel and flowery wood empowering the pleasant experience... an Oktoberfest that is hopped up on the kinds of flavors that suggest an IPA... some phenolic alcohol hints, but the majority of flavor is sweet, robust and powerful... overall, what does one expect from Lagunitas? A hoppy approximation of what a fest might be, but wow, this is a beer that transcends genre... better if consumed while sitting for the evening...
