Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass.

A: Clear, dark amber color with over one finger of cinnamon-tinted foam head that collapses to a large island. Heavy lacing--nearly continuous sheeting--remains on the glass.

S: Caramelized sugar, brown rye bread, and dark orange citrus with a spicy edge, all combine to make for an uncanny similarity to ketchup. No alcohol is detected.

T: Begins off-dry, with an immense malty character consisting of caramel and husky grain. A whiff of umami is also detected in the flavor--reminding of the way that very fresh bacon-flavored dog treats smell. Restrained fruitiness matches the citrus of the smell. Acidity builds slowly to a moderate peak during the middle, where flavors turn more spirituous--but with a few less sharp edges. The finish is respectably bitter, reaching a moderate level at its peak, then quickly tapering off to leave bready crystal malt and alcohol fumes to linger on the palate.

M: Medium to thick viscosity, slightly sticky and gently acidic on the palate, with low carbonation.

D/O: While comparisons of this beer to Lagunitas Wilco Tango Foxtrot may be appropriate, the Lucky 13 is the maltier of the two--seeming unbalanced in that direction despite the detectable hop influences. It is extreme for the style, considering the unusual sensory qualities, and would make an interesting player in a malt/hops contrast to Stone Arrogant Bastard. The aggressively malty backbone encourages pairing with zesty savory food, especially tomato-based sauces or soups.

From bottle to pint glass.

A: An opaque burnt orange with off-white one finger head that lingered.

S: Citrus, grapefruit, grassy hops and bready malts.

T: I wasn't expecting much, but got an opening volley of grapefruit and West Coast hops, followed by a pleasing malt taste. What sealed the deal was the honey/bready finish that spoke "Red Ale" loud and clear.

M: Medium with medium, chewy carbonation.

O: I could drink several of these. A nice surprise that begs to be visited again and again. Lucky, lucky.

Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue VII:

Brewed for their 13th anniversary. Hot label of an old-school pinup girl holding a pint with a horseshoe rocker. As for being a "Mondo Large Red Ale" ... let's find out.

Drops out of the bomber with some nice clarity and a red-stained copper color with a creamy, beige lacing that clings as it settles. Caramel, light brown sugar, alcohol esters, plum and guava. Hmm ... a malt bomb? Oh yeah. Toasty, nutty, caramel, biscuit, turbinado sugar, earth, brown bread, and tons of sweet, toasty grains. Light alcohol spice infused with some soft pepperiness and herbal tea-like hop characters. Some pungency and juiciness too. Finishes sweet, more tea, toasty and dry with granola linger.

Mondo. Check. Large. Redundant, and check. Red. Check. Ale. Check. A malt-a-licious surprise, and there's just enough hops to balance things out without stealing the show--you can't even tell it's 76.92 IBU. Hoist one. Happy 13!

taste is clean, fantastic combo of hops and malts. a great red ale. smooth drinker as well.

this is one of the better red ales i've had. a true double red ale, clean taste. Lagunitas knows whats up. creamy taste, very good. i really like this beer, one of my favorite Lagunitas beers; only Sucks is in this beer's realm.

I just got home from work, it's Thursday, and the wife and 10 week old baby have left a day early for a weekend getaway. I have the apartment all to myself for the first time in ages! What beer to choose for my one night of bachelorhood? I chose this one. I'm happy with my choice!
In my excitement I poured it perhaps a bit too aggressively because it yielded a huge foamy head that almost spilled over. Once it subsided, a sudsy and foamy lace covered the surface and stuck to the sides of the glass. A nice copper and amber color. Overall, a good looking drink.
The aroma is quite complex. It is initially dominated by sweet caramel malt and toasted bread. However, there is more to it than this. There are some fruity tones; citrus fruit and tropical. The hops are evident and almost pungent. There is also a strong but not overpowering alcohol aroma towards the end.
The taste matches many of the attributes of the aroma. Overall, the caramel malt sweetness predominates. It makes the body on the high side of medium, almost chewy. Yet, in the mouthfeel there is a strong hops presence that has quite a kick and balances things out. The finish is sweet, yet, leaves a dry and slightly bitter aftertaste. This is so drinkable and the alcohol is so well masked, that drinking more than one of these can be dangerous.
This is a delicious brew and almost beyond category. It is malty like an amber ale, yet, hoppy like an IPA. It reminds me a bit of DFH 90 IPA. I loved it!

Another big time winner from this NoCal brewer hot damn!.Poured into an impy pint glass a clear deep amber/bronze with billowing 2 1/2 finger slight off white head that stuck like glue to the glass leaving soap scum-like lace behind as it settled slowly. If you like BIG hops then you'll like the nose of this beer its like walking thru a pine forest huge pine needle and grapefruit rind aromas with just a hint of caramel and biscuit hmm Amarillos in there?Yes I am quite certain Amarillo's in there oh man,the flavors are piney and citrusy along with some geranium-like leafiness intertwined with underlying caramel and lightly sweet bread dough,to me though the hop punch steals the show hands down and I applaud Lagunitas on their 13th Anniversary beer this is a left coast gem.

Great appearance. Stunning red body with a thick, unyielding, never ending khacki head. Sap, citrus, biscuits, and caramel in the aroma. Balanced flavor. Plums and biscuits matched with grapefruit and pine. Luscious, juicy feel. Bitter finish. Somewhat filling after the first glass. Booze comes out with warming.

Thanks to Brewbaca for the sample.

Poured from 22 oz bomber

A-Copper reddish with 1-2 two inch white head. Good looking beer
S-Smell of sweet malt-caramel with hoppy, piney aroma, slightly boozy
T-Piney taste at first, sweetness of malt coming through, slightly boozy and a little metallic, not the smoothest flavor thought it was a little roughr around the edges
M-good feel, but a little watery, decent carbonation
D-Very drinkable beer.

Great label, this one's gonna transfer to skin as soon as I get the chance.

A: Ruddy bourbon coloring in the glass

S: The bouquet that comes off of this red ale is
pretty appetizing and quite strong. Hints of
the ABV are also there.

T: Like sippin' flowers... hoppy with a good
overall balance of understated malts, grain,
etc. You really have to seek them out due to
the hop strength.

M: Good bodied and nicely balanced. Of the red
ales I've sampled I'd say this one is most
tactily appealing to the pallet.

D: As drinkable as 8.5% can be. The aftertaste
is a little over the top for me and as per
usual I always prefer a few more bubbles.
Good drink, bravo Louisiana beer.

Lagunitas Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale 8.56% alochol. 22 oz. bomber poured into a dogfish goblet.

A- This beer pours a beautiful dark amber fluid with a vigorous head that falls to a creamy froth. Lacing is excellent leaving heavy patchy lacing that stays for the duration of the glass.

S- Massive push of barleywine like scents of dark plums, punes and sweet malty candied sugar.

T-M- Taste is complex with an overall excellence of flavors. Upfront is a sweet and overly ripe plum and prune flavor mixed with a citrusy hop balance. Toasted and burnt malt flavors are in the backbone of this beer with hints of brown sugar. Mouthfeel is near perfect with a smoothness that only rolls over the buds with light tart and tang feel making a hell of a drink.

Overall I like this beer in the aspect of drinkability and alcohol content. Excellent beer for session and daily.

A- Deep Orange and red. Crystal clear with a whit head.
S- Pine, resin, outside. Sweet malts.
T- Hops, and a good malt backbone. Some alcohol on the backend.
M- Coating with the hop oil and medium carbonation.
D- A bigger beer and the alcohol is present but it's very tasty.

A - Clear, dark amber, moderately high carbonation, nice just off white head that lasts and is sticky.

S - Lots of malt sweetness with a strong citrus and pine hop aroma.

T - Like the smell you get a lot of malt up front with a bit of sweetness, then the hops come on strong starting with some citrus and spice and then a good bit of bitterness.

M - Fairly full bodied beer but the higher carbonation level and smooth alcohol feel keep it from feeling chewy.

D - Awesome balance for a high gravity brew makes it very drinkable.

A: a rich translucent copper with hints of amber, thin head with excellent lacing.

S: very faint hop and pine aromas.

T: a faint sizzle of hops, while citrus flavors round out a full bodied, short-lasting taste.

MF/D: a brief fizzle of carbonation on the tongue that certainly doesn't overwhelm the flavor by any means.

Picked up at the store tonight...

Nice, clear caramel color. Light tan/off-white head. Came on an inch thick and reduced to an ample layer that wants to finish the beer off with me. Lace clings to the glass in sheet-rings as I drink this one down.

Tons of hops in the nose. Reminds me a lot of Oskar Blues Gordon actually, less caramel though. Citrus and floral mostly here but has some pine sap down in there too. A little sweet bread roll, but its nowhere close to the dominant aroma.

I'll be picking up another bomber of this...maybe two, especially at 3 bucks. This is good stuff, but I dont consider it the strong ale it is listed as in the database. Lots of hops, but super balanced. I agree with Lagunitas' self administered "Mondo Large Red" as the style. Biscuity and crystal malts form the base of this. Then a plethora of hops, citrus rinds and pine resin in the finish. Simple, but super tasty. This combination of malt and hop is my prefered flavor profile.

Mouthfeel is medium or so. Not overly full by anymeans. Carbonation levels are just right to add some nice crispness.

Drinkability is superb. Full flavored, but not overbearing, carbonation makes this refreshing. And as I said I like the flavor profile in this one. 3 bucks a bottle...Schweet!

In a Sam Adams pint glass the beer was copper-colored with a medium tan head that was very sticky.
Caramel aroma, sweet fruit, herbal/peppery hops.
Mostly caramel taste. Sweet fruit that seemed to be cherry. Late piney hops.
Medium-bodied. Hoppy, but not too aggressively.
Enjoyable beer.

Beautiful amber-almost orange in the glass. great thick, frothy head.

piney and citrus hops on the nose, with a biscuity malt backdrop. Definitely has that distinct "Lagunitas smell."

This is interesting. Piney hop blast washes over the tongue, but fades quickly, revealing a brown sugarish hint of malt. That also fades quickly for a surprisingly clean finish

You definitely know you're drinking something, but the alcohol is pretty well hidden for 8.5%.
