A good red ale amped up. It is censored with the abv almost doubled. Taste great, but I did taste alcohol on the finish. I would be happy with the censored.

From bottle to pint glass.

A: An opaque burnt orange with off-white one finger head that lingered.

S: Citrus, grapefruit, grassy hops and bready malts.

T: I wasn't expecting much, but got an opening volley of grapefruit and West Coast hops, followed by a pleasing malt taste. What sealed the deal was the honey/bready finish that spoke "Red Ale" loud and clear.

M: Medium with medium, chewy carbonation.

O: I could drink several of these. A nice surprise that begs to be visited again and again. Lucky, lucky.

Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue VII:

Brewed for their 13th anniversary. Hot label of an old-school pinup girl holding a pint with a horseshoe rocker. As for being a "Mondo Large Red Ale" ... let's find out.

Drops out of the bomber with some nice clarity and a red-stained copper color with a creamy, beige lacing that clings as it settles. Caramel, light brown sugar, alcohol esters, plum and guava. Hmm ... a malt bomb? Oh yeah. Toasty, nutty, caramel, biscuit, turbinado sugar, earth, brown bread, and tons of sweet, toasty grains. Light alcohol spice infused with some soft pepperiness and herbal tea-like hop characters. Some pungency and juiciness too. Finishes sweet, more tea, toasty and dry with granola linger.

Mondo. Check. Large. Redundant, and check. Red. Check. Ale. Check. A malt-a-licious surprise, and there's just enough hops to balance things out without stealing the show--you can't even tell it's 76.92 IBU. Hoist one. Happy 13!

I just got home from work, it's Thursday, and the wife and 10 week old baby have left a day early for a weekend getaway. I have the apartment all to myself for the first time in ages! What beer to choose for my one night of bachelorhood? I chose this one. I'm happy with my choice!
In my excitement I poured it perhaps a bit too aggressively because it yielded a huge foamy head that almost spilled over. Once it subsided, a sudsy and foamy lace covered the surface and stuck to the sides of the glass. A nice copper and amber color. Overall, a good looking drink.
The aroma is quite complex. It is initially dominated by sweet caramel malt and toasted bread. However, there is more to it than this. There are some fruity tones; citrus fruit and tropical. The hops are evident and almost pungent. There is also a strong but not overpowering alcohol aroma towards the end.
The taste matches many of the attributes of the aroma. Overall, the caramel malt sweetness predominates. It makes the body on the high side of medium, almost chewy. Yet, in the mouthfeel there is a strong hops presence that has quite a kick and balances things out. The finish is sweet, yet, leaves a dry and slightly bitter aftertaste. This is so drinkable and the alcohol is so well masked, that drinking more than one of these can be dangerous.
This is a delicious brew and almost beyond category. It is malty like an amber ale, yet, hoppy like an IPA. It reminds me a bit of DFH 90 IPA. I loved it!

pours dark amber with thick head. great looking red ale.

smells like a straight up red ale. nothing special but a clean red ale.

taste is clean, fantastic combo of hops and malts. a great red ale. smooth drinker as well.

this is one of the better red ales i've had. a true double red ale, clean taste. Lagunitas knows whats up. creamy taste, very good. i really like this beer, one of my favorite Lagunitas beers; only Sucks is in this beer's realm.

This golden orange/copper ale poures magnificently with an unfiltered-like look but still quite a bit transparent. Pretty white lingering head with spotty lacing. Smell is VERY NICE, layers upon layers of lush fruity/tropical hops - the dank ones Lagunitas is known for, some detectable booze, a little sour fruit as well. Taste matches up to the note, an almost IPA-like taste with a little creamier malt quality. Washes down excellently, goes great with a garlicy buschemel pasta. I have come to really love Lagunitas.

More of a ginger because of its personality after you've had a couple.
But.
Lucky 13 leaves some amazing lacing. Good abiding head as well. This beer is Dr Pepper and Welch's Grape Soda duking it out with yeast, as far as the aromatics are concerned. A little bit of that comes through in the flavor, and the smokiness is more like a kiss. It's on the cherry side, and very fruity, and whatever actual smoked note really comes through towards the back end. Definite bit of salt, and slightly tabascoey flavor with some cracker and resin. Provides some burn with its 8.8% abv profile. i.e. Get some meat inside. Or, on top of some form of grain derived delivery device: and enjoy. Or, drink it.

A: Brilliant copper. Clear as a bell. Finger and a half of slightly tawny heady. Very fine, with some large bubbles. Carbonation is moderate. Lacing is stellar, retention is moderate.

S: Big hoppy notes up front. Lot of citrus, grapefruit, lot of forest in there. Underneath that is a bruising bit of malt. Lot of caramel, toffee. Touch of baking spices.

T: Lots of the same red malts come through in the taste. Huge shot of baking spices, lots of toffee, some brown sugar. The mid palate takes over with a big, citric hop blast that isn't quite enough to overtake the caramel malt sweetness. The hops are citric, piney, with some grapefruit and lemon peel running through, but the malt ultimately beats them back and the finish is mostly sweet, with some lingering bitterness.

M: It's a biggun, for sure. The sugary malts give this one an added weight. Definitely a sipper.

O: Bueno. The toasted sugars flavors of the malt tend to take over, especially as it warms. However, the bitterness of the hops keeps this one from being completely one side. Definitely a unique beer.

A: Nice deep red color, transparent, with a very small head. No retention and very little lacing to speak of, which is fine for this style.

S: A huge dose of grapefruit with a great big backing of northwestern hops. One of the best IPA/Red ale's I've ever smelled. I can't wait!

T: Great flavor - grapefruit hitting like it did in the smell, one of the strongest grapefruit taste's I've had in a beer. Hops are definitely right there with it, along with a nice healthy dose of malt, which is mostly wheaty with a little barley. Aftertaste doesn't disappoint either, with a little bit of smokey grainy malt left over. Surprisingly clean flavor afterward.

M: Clean feeling after swallowing, pretty thick, medium-heavy body, but not too chewy. Perfect carbonation. Non-astringent.

D: This is a wonderfully drinking beer, but the ABV is a little high if you want to drive home after one. Get a DD.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into my Duvel tulip.

a - Pours a reddish-mahogany brown color with 3 inches of white head and light carbonation. Tiny bit of lacing.

s - Smells of citrus fruits and hops, pine hops, smooth sweet fruity malts, and bready and caramel malts.

t - Tastes of citrus hops, pine hops, and bready malts. Hints of fruit. Has a small amount fo bitterness to it.

m - Medium body and light carbonation. Smooth and pretty easy to drink.

d - A nice amber ale that has some nice citru hops to it. Would try again.

16oz pour at Rivertowne North Shore - served in a pint glass

A - bit over a finger of very creamy, off-white foam which hung out for awhile...sits on top of a bold amber colored beer, clear texture. excellent coating lace down the sides of the glass.

S - bright citrus hops, highlighting juicy grapefruits and some melon...complimented nicely by a bold caramel sweetness with a notable touch of spice.

T - nicely balanced with a firm citrusy and slightly floral hop flavor, joined immediately by bready malts, caramel, and spice...finishes slightly floral.

M - excellent example of how a good beer can be pushed up a notch by stellar mouthfeel. medium bodied, yet insanely creamy, but oily at the same time, refreshing but with a lot of character.

D - i'm usually hit or miss with the "Imperial" Amber style, this was a huge hit for sure. great to look at, smell, and taste...I will be on the lookout for this for sure. well done.

This is one of THE best bargains on the market!! Consistently pay $3.99 for a 22oz. bomber at Wine King in Wall, NJ.
Pours a reddish-orange similar to a double ipa, and smells like one too- though its categorized as a Red Ale. Poured into a tulip with a light head that disintegrates quickly.
Great hoppy taste that hides the alcohol, and keeps reminding me of a low quality double ipa, but for a red ale, and for this price, i'm hooked!
I've tried Lagunitas Maximus, which is their double ipa, for $8.99 per bomber. The Maximus may be slightly better, but certainly not more than twice as good, as price would suggest!

Pours the color of a fresh new penny, clean and clear, thin cap of yellow white head with some very sticky rings. Scent is pure Lagunitas west coast hop - grapefruit and bitter pine - with some brown sugary sweet malt. Taste is quite strong on the grapefruit, some pine resin, with enough sweet malt to cut into the overall bitterness. Medium bodied, thinner feeling then the boldness of the scent and taste dictate, goes down clean and smooth...would like a touch of creaminess. Overall I'm a huge fan of hopped up ambers and this is one of the best, though well behind Nugget Nectar in all areas..
