Beautiful pour: color, aroma and head are all delicious even before introducing this beer to the palate. Once introduced this beer yields an initial sweetness that soon builds into strong yet manageable hop characteristics. Finishes semi-sweet. This beer circles the palate and ends very nicely. Complex yet very drinkable. A

Purchased at a local Trader Joes - from a mix and match 6 pack. Wanted to try it before buying an entire 6-pack of it! Pours a deep orange-red. Very bubbly foam - but not frothy..quite enticing. Smell the hops with a citrus tone. Taste is a great mix of West Coast hops..not as malty as I was expecting - and that's a good thing. A very good red ale...really a red IPA ...which I will be surely partaking of again.

A - very deep burnt orange/rust color w/ a gorgeous beige 2 finger head that stuck around for days...this ones a looker

S - bountiful citrus hops, with a decent serving of sweet malt. very strong smelling

T - quite bitter upfront, but rounds out a bit midway w/ a welcomed biscuit/yeast character followed up w/ a rich malt sweetness that sings to the tune of assorted fruits. I love the sugary sweetness that comes before the bitter close(nothing too harsh, but enough to satisfy hopheads like myself)

MF - my only negative about this beer -i enjoyed the big body and creamy feel, but i think that it could benefit from a bit more carbonation.

D - abv. is well hidden and only becomes remotely appearant as the beer nears room temp. great overall flavor...hell, exceptional overall flavor. I finished the bomber and i want more. I wish Lagunitas would make this into a year 'round, cause this is easily thier best yet IMHO!

pours dark amber with thick head. great looking red ale.

smells like a straight up red ale. nothing special but a clean red ale.

taste is clean, fantastic combo of hops and malts. a great red ale. smooth drinker as well.

this is one of the better red ales i've had. a true double red ale, clean taste. Lagunitas knows whats up. creamy taste, very good. i really like this beer, one of my favorite Lagunitas beers; only Sucks is in this beer's realm.

Appearance - Copper color that looks to be identical to the color of a penny. Great looking red ale with a tan head that looked almost creamy on the top. Pretty sweet in the lace department as well.

Smell - First thing I get is a deep caramel malt smell, with an almost bready quality to it. Hops are blended in as well as some citrus notes.

Taste & Mouthfeel - This one has a deep almost abyss like amount of never ending caramel malt. Hops seem to scratch through in the back to give a bitterness to the finish. Citrus flavors are present as well to help tip the scales back to an ipa feel. Mouthfeel is smooth as silk and way on the creamy side.

Drinkability - Absolutely a must for any lover of the style. Delicious to the last drop.

Beautifully clear amber brown that's a shade darker then the norm. Very nice color, looks a bit like true maple syrup. Nice medium stacking of foamy stature leaps up to the top of the glass with vigor as it then settles slowly to a keep a heap of skim always present and a wall of tightly broken lacing across the glass is etched well across the glass.

Smell is quite nice and hoppy with a moderate amount of citrusy orange & lemon peels and pith rising from the pour like a ray of sunshine through the clouds after a storm. Deep piney ascents protrude past the citrus as it gains a woody resin oiled presense as it sits. Quite nice.

Taste is just as nice with a very even toned presense of hops and malts. Pale and toasty malts mix well with a slight piney oiled lathering and a citrusy pith touch of bitterness to keep it peppy and hopped up in spice. It has a lovely hop complexity with leafyness, resinyness, fruityness, bitterness, dryness, and citrusy stuff all over the place. Yet, with that all said, its balance is immaculately placed and teetering on the edge of either going more malts or going all hops. Damn nice.

Feel is slick and oily with a nice, well-rounded bitterness of citrusy oils and pine oils across a slightly toasted realm of malt sweetness and bready play. Body is about medium/full with a great disposition of balance between malt and hop.

Wow, I could drink alot of this stuff! It's probably one of the better beers I've had by Lagunitas by far and suits me just right. So seek this out and enjoy. It has a little of everything that exudes the West Coast style of what an American Strong Ale needs to be. Very good stuff. Yum!

A- pours a brownish color with slight red highlights nice 2fingers width head which is hanging out for a while and leaves a nice sticky lacing.

S-nice smell of bittery hops balanced by sweet malt scent.

T-bitter hops up front citruousy and piney malts make a small showing mid palate but there come the hops again in the aftertaste.

M medium bodied and nicely(not overly) carbonated to make it smooth creamy and bitter.

D-drinkability on this one is above par the 8.5abv is well hidden. a very nice west coast take on the Red Ale.

Pours a deep copper red color with a thick foamy head. Slightly hazy. Head retention is very good. Lacing is excellent. Nice malty, piney aroma. Hints of caramel. More like a DIPA. Very malty taste with a nice transition to a piney hop, ending in a very smooth, caramel like taste. There is a hint of citrus in there, maybe more with the aftertaste. This is a medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. A true joy to drink. Very surprised with this one.

Dank and resinous. Mouth: mod body with mod CO2. Overall: beautiful hoppy beer, smooth for ETOH. Will buy again.

This beer is amazing it could deserve an A+ or 5's for all ratings, because the hard malt burst of red ales tops this brew it does not deserve a 5 for taste, mouthfeel or drinkablilty. Overall this is one of my personal favorite beers, its crispness is remarkable urging you to session it all night, or at least 50 ounces of it.

One of the best beers I've had in the past month.

A> Dark Reddish Amber. 1.5 fingers of creamy tan head, that settles slowly with moderate lacing.

S> Pleasant smelling, Bitter hops scent noticed immediately followed by a citrus and sweet grain scent.

T> Hoppy with hints of grapefruit and dried apricot. Finishes smoothly with more than a hint of hops.

M> Smooth flavoured and sticks to you tongue for awhile after you taste it. The bottle tells me there is a high alcohol content, but it's blended in so expertly you don't taste it.

D> You can sip this for hours or pound it back it tastes that good. The only downside is the alcohol content will catch up with you sooner or later. That is really the only down side to this excellently balanced brew.

All in all this is a superbly balanced beer. It's citrus hints and flavours embody what a California beer should.

L: Brilliant amber red with 1” off-white clingy foam cap
S: Grassy, piney hops, caramel malts, light fruit
T: Starts with malt with light sweetness and then pine bitterness takes over with traces of light fruit.
F: Very creamy, full body, medium carbonation.
O: Big strong malt flavors and body balance assertive hop flavors for a very drinkable large red ale.

Lucky indeed!

L: Pours a rich bronze with a fingers worth of off white head. Clear and transparent when held up to the light. S: Nose is full of honey, bready malt, floral essence, and heaps of grapefruit. T: Mostly follows the nose, but richer. Caramel, bread up front; the hops brighten in the middle with citrusy, grapefruity, slightly bitter on the tongue, begging you to dislike it, when the malt jumps back in with a honey, crackery finish that all but screams Red Ale. M: medium, carbonation is good but a bystander to the big flavor profile. Pretty dry, given the size of the malt presence. O: A very good, drinkable Red. As advertised, "Mondo Large". I never seem to be disappointed with Lagunitas. Then again, I must be lucky, indeed.

22oz standard brown bottle, capped. Pours out mostly red with a hint of some brown. Very little head to speak of as this is light on carbonation.

Smell is big hop and malt and almost reminds me of SN Celebration. The hop smell here is a bit more "burnt". Taste is amazingly smooth as this beer is very well balanced. Malty and sweet in the beginning giving way to great citrus hops through the middle and end. 8.3 is not present at all for me and well hidden.

Bottom line, a wonderful beer. A bit "thick" in the mouth to drink too many but I don't think this beer is meant for heavy consumption. A beer I will be buying again soon. Well done.

Serving was the ubiquitous 22oz bomber. Is there a better size, really?

This beer pours an inviting dark coppery color into the pint glass. With a 1/2 inch tan colored head that leaves lacing all the way to the bottom of my all too fast empty glass.
One whiff of this beaut and I was hooked. Lots of resiny hop smell. A touch of citrus, but not sure what b/c I'm just not that good yet. Kinda of a hint of a west coast IPA smell if you follow that.

TASTE- Here is where good turns golden. It hits the tongue with some force and wrecks it all the way down the back of the mouth, but in a good way. Hops galore, but balanced oh so delicately with what must have been tons of malt. A red the way a red should always be.

The mouthfeel is big, naturally. It can overpower if not prepared.

I could drink this in the Sahara or Antarctica, but probably only 2 or so at a time. It's a tad strong to be sessioning this mutha unless you got your big boy pants on.

This is the 13th anniversary release from Lagunitas and bills itself as "A Mondo Large Red Ale". Knowing Lagunitas, that means copius amounts of hops.

I guessed right as big citrusy hops hit the nose as it pours a lovely orangey copper. The hops dominate the tongue too but it's nicely balanced by a considerable malt backbone. The 8.3% ABV is nicely masked and it the malt is pleasantly sweet. Very smooth and drinkable for a big beer.

This is probably only the second "Double Red" type beer I've had and they both have been really nice. Go get it.

This beer pours a sinister crimson color with amber highlights when held to light - one finger off-white head fades leaving behind a thin lacing that encircles the entire glass. Smells excellent - buttery caramel malts melt into a mixture of sweet fruity hops. The flavor blows me away - malt and hop combo that is balanced beautifully - very sweet caramel and grapefruit, also piny oily and resinous, this beer is damn good! The mouthfeel is moderately thick and a bit sticky with good carbonation - no real feel from the abv. This is an outstanding Amber/Red ale, I'm a huge fan of Odell's hoppy Red Ale and this one is battling it out neck and neck and might just pull of the win!

22 oz bomber
A: Fantastic. Clear. Medium Red. Standard side pour into a tulip. Giant 2 inch off-white head that is receding very slowly. Bubble size ranges from pure foam to giant 1/4 inch. As its receding its creating a cloud like head in middle of glass. Carbonation geyser up the middle of the glass going to surface. Very sticky persistent lacing on side of glass that seems to be glued there. By the time I finished the glass, the lacing on the glass is like artwork. Expectations are high. This is one of the best looking beers I have ever seen. Lots of particles in the second glass of the bomber.
S: Very nice. Lots of hops. More than I expected. Earthy. Pine. Citrus. Grapefruit. Tangerine? Maybe even a floral note. Oats. Getting a little bit of malt but not much. ABV is very well hidden. I don't smell it at all. As it warms I am getting some caramel.
T: Awesome. Now I am getting the malt first with the hops hiding in the background. Very balanced. Its smells really hoppy but it tastes very malty. A lot of bitterness on the back end. A lot is going on with this beer as I let it warm up.
M: Creamy and smooth to start with a tart crisp finish and then the warmth of the ABV settling in. Very excellent. The carbonation is just right. It starts strong and stays nice until the finish of the glass.
O: This is a fantastic beer. One of the best I have had. I love the in your nose hop profile that reminds me of a DIPA. Just when you taste it you are dealing with a different animal that is more complex in character. I have another one and am tempted to drink it right now but won't do that until I get another one for my stash. If you like strong IPAs that can cross over into the complexity of a Stout, this is a beer you want. I am going to grab a few more while I can.

Lucky 13 pours a deep clear red with an off white head that leaves good lacing down my tulip. Aromas are grapefruit, caramel, slight alcohol presence. It looks beautiful and smells that way too. Plenty of caramel malt and grapefruit in the nose. Not heavy in the body, but plenty there. Highly drinkable with enough carbonation to keep it from being thick. I wish this was lower abv, but the alcohol is pretty well hidden for over 8%.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a bright copper color with a short foamy off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is well-blended and loaded with floral hops and citrus & caramel sweetness.

T: The taste is very well-balanced with a strong hops bitterness and sweet flavors of citrus and caramel. There’s a tiny bit of alcohol that comes through, but it doesn’t detract from the taste at all. The malt character is hearty and the after-taste is nicely bitter and hoppy.

M: Smooth and very crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, slightly sticky finish.

D: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not very filling, good kick to it, if the label didn’t read “a mondo large red ale” I’d swear this was a 2IPA and a very good one at that. This beer is one that I could drink for a whole and enjoy the entire time.

Poured from bomber to tulip

A: 2 fingers of off-white head, dark reddish-brown, good lacing.

S: Sweet malt in the front of the nose, piney hops, slight citrus aroma.

T: Very similar to odor. Sweet, caramel, bready malt up front, piney hop taste at the finish. Bit of citrus/grapefruit in the aftertaste. The alcohol isn't noticeable.

M: Nice body, nice carbonation.

D: Extremely drinkable. Delicious, very well balanced.

Overall, a great beer. Very drinkable (should probably keep the ABV in mind, though), great aroma, and delicious. A new favorite of mine. I can't wait to get my hands on some more.

Poured from a cellar temperature bottle into a room temperature glass mug. The beer has a very pretty orange/amber color. It's crystal clear and has a bit of carbonation rising within. There is a thick head of tan foam. As it settles, patchy lacework is left behind. This beer looks like how I want a mug of beer served to me. As soon as I opened the bottle, I could smell caramel malts. Now that the beer is in the glass and I can get a better handle on the aroma, I can smell caramel and toffee malts, oak and a bourbon-like alcohol. It smells strong and pleasing. The taste is equally impressive. Crispy, toasted malts are readily apparent and give the beer a a slightly sweet taste, reminiscent of brown sugar. Caramel flavors are present in the finish. The aftertaste has some oakiness. The entire taste has an underlying bitter presence. The beer is full bodied and leaves a lot of coating, but isn't too sticky or sweet. It is highly carbonated. For all of the big aspects of this beer (it is an Imperial Red, after all), it is very drinkable. I'll easily make my way through these 22 ounces this afternoon. I find myself wishing I had more than this one bottle. I also wish I had consumed this beer sooner. I've had this bottle for a few months, and I think the hop presence has suffered. I'll have to seek out a source of fresh bottles.

Killer beer in that over the top but balanced style that Lagunitas owns. I thought this was a DIPA due to the huge hops and big piny finish. I loved the mouthfeel as it was huge yet velvet smooth. No rough edges yet complexity from every sip. I need to get some more of this as the BC government stores stockpiled it at $6.35 each.

Drank it from a bottle I bought at BevMo.

Pours a wonderful red color with a fantastic 1 inch head. Wonderful carmel like smell. Head really sticks to the glass.

Taste - sweet and nice at first than a perfect burst of hop flavor.

Fantastic beer on par with Hop Stoopid.

Dark crimson with a finger of off-white to slightly tan foam, good duration--a great-looking brew. The nose was more hopped than I expected with lots of malt--citrus fruit with a hint of roasted vanilla bean. Wonderful taste, malty and smooth with a nice bite from hops; well-balanced. This is easily one of the two best Red Ales I've ever had, just fantastic.

A slightly thin mouthfeel results from a little flattening, but nothing too compromising. Incredibly good beer, Lucky 13 Mondo is a gem.
