(12 oz bottle, 122 7 2, purchased warm last month, refrig-ed since... poured into my Chouffe tulip)

L: reddish-amber liquid with a swirl of suspended speckled sediment... lovely, tall, messy froth of off-white foam, which takes awhile to recede, decent crusty bands of lace... looking again, this particular shade of reddish orange seems seldom seen

S: mix of fresh pear and plum hop aromas, tropical and orange taffy candy (think Mambo), little bit of ashy toastiness in the background, firm doughy malt bedrock below... subtle detection of medicinal booze... overall intensity shows hoppy depth, inviting

T: juicy immediately up front, tastes like a children's juice box flavor of 'fruit blend' (apple, cran, grape, etc), slowly emerging tea and grapefruit peel flavors and bitterness in the finish... second sip reveals menthol and sour cherry notes, with a cereal maltiness lingering

F: characteristically frothy, resin-filmy mouthfeel... very delicate amount of heat and phenolic numbness in the back... altogether dry and warm enough on that back end to be loose about giving savoring sips,

O: seems like a typical, all-too-familiar Lagunitas hop display, with the only stand out elements being the subtly roasty, subtly jam/caramel sweetness... I'd rather drink this over that joke of a 'Scotch ale', but each is way unbalanced of course toward dem cones

Poured 12 oz bottle into snifter glass. 8.8 % abv

Appearance- Orange-red with a medium head with lots of lacing. Very hazy

Smell- Peppery, sweet malt, apple,

Taste- Sweet caramel malt, lightly toasted bread. Floral sweetness arrives to the palate. Grapefruit, with even a tinge of apple as was noticed in the aroma comes into play. Grassy hop flavor, some pine. Ends bitter, spicy, and hot.

Mouthfeel- Medium heavy in body with active carbonation.

Overall- A fiery intense imperial red, with lots going on. Malty, fruity, hoppy. Complex. Well crafted by lagunitas. Should be a regular offering.

DATE: July 31, 2017... OCCASION: toasting a Will's last game/watching the Iron Pigs with Jeff/visiting Bob Sunday... GLASSWARE: Maudite snifter... dark brown amber body that builds creamy, bubbly head with arcs of lacing with strings of effervescence... the single-finger head sits staunchly atop... robust pine and caramel malts impugn the taste buds... berry, plum, fruity apple, subtle spiciness akin to rye, and low-key phenol make for a boozy, musty earthiness that is attractively thick nonetheless... sips a creaminess that warms like bourbon and provides a smokiness like scotch... at 8.8% ABV, the body is mellow, medium-bodied, and worth a slow sip... flirts with a barley wine's profile, without the intense heat, but has enough hops to give the beer strength at the teeth... another quality product from Lagunitas, one that I willingly paid $2.10 for...

Picked up a bottle at the grocery. Poured into a pint glass. Beautiful dark Amber with a slight head. This smells like Lagunitas to me. Malty with hops in the background. Taste is similar to some of their other beers in my opinion. Very nice quality beer. Great way to finish the night. Smooth tasty beer.

A sweet malt and hop scent when opened. There was no foamy head when poured. It was a reddish-pale ale, with a dark amber color. Looked delicious. A very nice hop taste that lingered. Would be worth having another one.

Pours a red amber into a fifteen ounce mug the same temperature as the beer. One finger off white head that dissipates quickly to a lasting thin rime. Some lacing.

The nose is herbal and floral hops. Some ripe white grapefruit. Dark sweet fruit. Touch of pine with some biscuit.

The palate is struck first by a big malt backbone backed up immediately by floral and herbal hops. Bread with an understated sweetness. Slightly bitter finish balances the sweetness well.

Good carbonation makes for an almost full creamy mouthfeel. Probably closer to medium on second thought.

A very good brew. Well balanced. Crisp and refreshing. With an 8.80% ABV enjoy cautiously.

This red ale pours a dark russet color with a medium frothy off-white head. The smell is big on malts with a sweet bread quality, but there is a mild hoppy citrus undertone to it as well. The taste is big on malts also with sweet bread, nutty, brown sugar, and caramel flavors, but it is balanced by some pretty big hop flavors with citrus and some herbal notes. This leaves a mild lingering bitterness and a very light dryness in the finish, which also has a somewhat creamy mouthfeel. I was very surprised to find out that this is 77 ibu though, the malts are so big, that I would have guessed more like 40 - 50 ibu. There is also a little bit of an alcohol flavor, which I don’t mind at all, and is not surprising given that this is a very big red ale at 8.8% alcohol. The body is on the high end of medium. Is this a “hoppy red”? Perhaps, it’s certainly hoppier then the average, but I have had hoppier and it is quite well balanced. Is this a big, bold red? Without question, everything about this is bold: the flavors, the alcohol, and the body. It is indeed “Mondo large” and has the feel of being between a red ale and a barleywine. This is definitely a very interesting version of what I normally view as a pretty boring style. It is a must try for red ale fans.

The appearance had an orange/amber/slightly brown colored body with a two finger white foamy head that rises a bit and then falls leaving a decent amount of clingy foamy lacing in its wake. The smell had a very caramel-forward, and a decent amount of breadiness, hopped just enough to keep the "hopheads" satisfied on this brew. The taste had caramel flavored hops - well balanced, holey moley, very well balanced, caramel aftertaste, no finish. On the palate, it sat about a medium, uh - maybe sessionable - perhaps. The carbonation seemed good for the style and for me, becomes slightly creamy. Overall, this is a very flavorful beer well worthy of having more pours.
