From a 12 oz bottle into a nonic pint. A crystal clear reddish amber ale topped by a two finger tall off-white head. Retention and lacing are both excellent.

Nosing reveals fruity notes (cherries, ripe apples, slight hint of banana) along with caramel malts and pine-y hops.

Taste follows the nose, bringing caramel malt sweetness garnished with dried berries up front. Lightly toasted nutty notes creep around on the background. The finish is long, dry, and pleasantly bitter from the Amarillo hops.

Mouth-feel is on the thick side of medium, creamy and rich. Alcohol is fairly assertive at nearly 9% ABV, leaving a nice warmth after the finish.

An excellent red ale, Lucky 13 is one of the finest offerings from Lagunitas that I've tried. The balance of sweet and bitter on display here is outstanding. While normally a spring offering (the bottle I reviewed here was the last survivor of a six pack that had hid behind other beers!) I personally hope that this one goes into regular year-round production. Recommended.

Poured from a 12oz bottle.
Reddish golden/orange color, clear, head settles to a thin white top coating, sporadic lacing.
Dark fruit on nose, like a slightly toned down barleywine on taste. Coming from the other direction, the beer is a very strong red ale. Bitterness at the end. Sort of a special occasion brew.

part of a flight at The Brick House in Orwigsburg PA on Monday.

Dark red/amber color body, good and persistent off white head leaving decent lacing.

Not getting much on the nose, bu this is a Spring offering from Lagunitas, so might be a bit long in the tooth. Nothing good, nothing bad.

However, it's a tasty offering indeed, even with some age on it. malty, some dried fruit, a little bitter with a good sweet malty background. The bitterness somehow manages to be sharp but not strong. 8.8abv is an asset, leaving a warm feeling.

Feel is above medium, finish is sweet and bitter.

Overall, and for the most part I avoid Lagunitas since the buyout, this was a pretty good beer. Might have to revisit it next Spring and see if the taste is significantly different.

Copper color, good lacing. Strong caramel malt smell. Lots of flavors going on - some fruit, some smoke, some spice, with nice bitter finish to balance. Not shy about the alcohol content. A little chewy.

Instead of adding to nearly 1,000 reviews (to do so in an original fashion, I'd have to make stuff up), let me ask two questions.

First: Are Amarillo hops a cure for the common cold ?
This is important because my buds are suffering from a summer virus that is surprisingly resistant to treatment.
So, I was hoping these hops will mitigate the virus. If they beat it up, I will let you know.

Second: How is Lucky 13 different than an American Barleywine?
Answer: a couple less ABV%. But other than that... an American Barleywine is what I'm drinking at this moment in time.

As for celebrating Lagunitas' first profitable year with this ale in 2007 (after at least a decade of investors sweating more than if they worked in a brewhouse), the first profitable year is great cause for celebration. Anyone thinking that a brewery is worth the effort financially, they need to read Tony Magee's "So.... you want to start a brewery, do you?" And if anyone calls Tony Magee a "sell-out" for his deal with Heineken, I am glad to defend him as a brilliant strategist for selling the craft gospel for, get this, only the best independent recipes (most of whom otherwise will get squished by the combination of more demanding drinkers, backward state laws and how financing favors the big brand names.) So instead of crafters making a lot of not-so-good-recipes and wasting time and money on not-so-good beer, Tony has provided them an avenue out of poverty and into long-term productivity.

If Magee ends up making the Heineken partnership work to the benefit of good crafters (but not-so-great businessmen), he will be more than brilliant. He can walk on water... even if his Amarillo hops are not the cure for the common cold.

Taste: Smoked malts, dark fruits, plums, nutty notes with hops that balance it out. Warming alcohol at end. Same with nose. Reddish copper brown color, semi clear, tan head with sticky lace. Medium body. Remind me of part barley with part imperial red. 64 IBUs

(12 oz bottle, 122 7 2, purchased warm last month, refrig-ed since... poured into my Chouffe tulip)

L: reddish-amber liquid with a swirl of suspended speckled sediment... lovely, tall, messy froth of off-white foam, which takes awhile to recede, decent crusty bands of lace... looking again, this particular shade of reddish orange seems seldom seen

S: mix of fresh pear and plum hop aromas, tropical and orange taffy candy (think Mambo), little bit of ashy toastiness in the background, firm doughy malt bedrock below... subtle detection of medicinal booze... overall intensity shows hoppy depth, inviting

T: juicy immediately up front, tastes like a children's juice box flavor of 'fruit blend' (apple, cran, grape, etc), slowly emerging tea and grapefruit peel flavors and bitterness in the finish... second sip reveals menthol and sour cherry notes, with a cereal maltiness lingering

F: characteristically frothy, resin-filmy mouthfeel... very delicate amount of heat and phenolic numbness in the back... altogether dry and warm enough on that back end to be loose about giving savoring sips,

O: seems like a typical, all-too-familiar Lagunitas hop display, with the only stand out elements being the subtly roasty, subtly jam/caramel sweetness... I'd rather drink this over that joke of a 'Scotch ale', but each is way unbalanced of course toward dem cones

Poured 12 oz bottle into snifter glass. 8.8 % abv

Appearance- Orange-red with a medium head with lots of lacing. Very hazy

Smell- Peppery, sweet malt, apple,

Taste- Sweet caramel malt, lightly toasted bread. Floral sweetness arrives to the palate. Grapefruit, with even a tinge of apple as was noticed in the aroma comes into play. Grassy hop flavor, some pine. Ends bitter, spicy, and hot.

Mouthfeel- Medium heavy in body with active carbonation.

Overall- A fiery intense imperial red, with lots going on. Malty, fruity, hoppy. Complex. Well crafted by lagunitas. Should be a regular offering.
