12oz bottle poured in a spiegelau glass.
Look - a deep copper color with a gigantic off-white head composed of bubbles of all sizes. The head is nice and creamy and has some great retention and thick lacing.
Smell - sweet caramel and bready malts are most prominent, but you also get some pine resin and juicy citrus.
Taste - this beer has an excellent blend of toasty sweet malts and hop bitterness. The strongest notes are caramel, pine, and grapefruit. Sweetness overpowers the hoppy notes, but the hop characteristics still shine through.
Feel - moderate carbonation, medium body, and relatively smooth finish.

The aroma of this beer is all juicy, fruity hops and the palate follows the nose. While the flavor is predominantly that of the hops, the bitterness is attenuated by the malt backbone of the red ale, leaving a taste that is just REALLY juicy.

Bottle poured into a Lagunitas mason jar

A: Pours reddish orange with a creamy light tan head that settles to a dense layer and leaves plenty of thick lacing.

S: Toasty bready malt, dark sugar, fruity berry notes, spicy pine, a bit floral, and a hint of citrus.

T: Bready lightly toasted malt, fruity and citrus notes, berry, orange, a little spicy pine, and some dark sugar.

M: Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, pretty smooth.

O: Pretty darn nice red ale. I would love to drink this in the fall, but it still drinks pretty nicely right now.

Vibrant red pour, off white head 1/2", that red melds with copper/auburn. Aroma pops those red malts, was expecting more hop goodness especially from Lagunitas.

Taste is nice, competes with those big hoppy elite red beers like Nugget Nectar, a little sweeter. This red malt thing is really strong, they didn't just add enough for the color, its hearty. Hides alcohol well.

Clear copper body with lazy bubbles rising, light tan huge rocky head, tons of sticky lace. Tropical fruit dominates the nose- mango, papaya, pineapple, orange- juicy and sweet. Moderate bitterness. The taste offers the same mix of fruit but they are dulled by solid caramel-like malts, with a hint of sugar that makes me think crystal malt. Moderate/high bitterness, mollified by some sweetness.
Usually 'red ale' means a passable-good beer, but this bad boy was downright sensational. Huge hops plethora on the nose, with tons of flavor, character, and balance to boot. Cheers!

A: [4.25] Beer is a reddish amber color. I am struck by the big dense 1 1/2 fingers of off white head. The head recedes slowly and leaves nice lacing on the glass. The bottle lists the ABV (8.8%) and has a born on date code (04/15/2016).

S: [3.50] Prickly fruit. Pineapple, melon, toffee, caramel and some pumpkin spice.

T: [3.00] Melon, pears, spiced cake, toffee.

M: [3.50] Beer has medium body with medium carbonation. The alcohol pokes its head up a bit and is not invisible.

O: [3.25] I had a hard tme nailing down descriptors for the aroma and taste. The beer is more malt than hops. The mix is strange and while it is not offensive it seems unsucessful to me. I would pass on this in the future.

Crystal clear copper with two or three solitary streams of carbonation entrusted to keep the thin sand colored head supplied.
Faints note of licorice in the piney leather aroma.
Malts, alcohol and hops play ale's version of Rock, Paper, Scissors with none relenting and coalescing into a peppery finish.
Smooth and drinkable.

Poured into tulip glass. It pours a reddish-amber color with two fingers of creamy, eggnog-colored head and lacing. It smells of roasted malt, brown sugar, floral hops, and a whiff of grapefruit. The taste features a strong malt backbone with biscuit, brown, caramel, orange peel, and finishing with a dry hoppy bitterness. The tastes blend together really well. You can taste and feel the 8.8% ABV. This ale has a fairly chewy mouthfeel and is moderately carbonated. Overall, it is really tasty and it strikes me as a perfect Autumn ale. It would stand up to a good meal and is enjoyable for casual drinking, as well.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter.

Pours a medium amber/orange, cloudy, with a one and a half finger head, loose, foamy cling. Smells of citrusy hops- orange, grapefruit, malt, brown sugar, some dank and piney hops. The taste is citrus- less than the nose, malt, caramel, brown sugar, some piney hops, a fair amount of hop bitterness throughout. Mostly smooth, good body.

Nice beer, easy drinking. Good flavor.

Yo, yo yo. Here today to talk about the liquid productions of the petaluma masterminds behind Lagunitas's Mondo Large Red Ale. Mondo Large. You can already tell, this review is going to be a great time.

L: Yes. Yes. Beautiful Womanne. A Horse Shoe. A beer of gleaming resplendent presentation.
S: Fine. If the word fine means to you fucking incredibly, syrupy (literally in an olfactory sense), exotic, overwhelming, nay, trammeling, in the hop capacity. this thing trucks in hops. I mean... this is an imperial red, no? Theese, are the reasons why I can't even talk about taste.
T: Don't
F: Delightful. Silky. Fizzy. Then kind of jagged. Needs a better outro. Some more smoothness, then perhaps some sort of roastiness, body; depth, to go with the very intense hop depth. Go deeper.

O: This is amazing. Mondo indeed. Bottle details below

12 oz squat brown glass bottle, capped
Imperial red ale, 8.8 %
there were a bunch of very chaotic, indecipherable nubmers mysteriously printed on the neck of this bottle. ???

Had on tap at Lagunitas in Petaluma. Wow, this is very strong for a amber/red ale. Felt good after drinking this. Copper/red, smells more piney than typical red ale, has a decent bitterness to counteract maltiness. Medium bodied, if even on the heavier side.

12oz bottle, date stamp of 118 6 2 1119 0403. Served in a tulip glass.

Appearance: Bright coppery red colored beer with an initial 1/4" thick rocky off white head that died back to a ring and skin of foam across the top. Lots of fine lacing all over the glass. Nice looking beer.

Smell: Hoppy - mostly orange citrus rind and just a hint of pine.

Taste: Nice blend of hops and malt - very hoppy, but not a bitterness bomb to my palate. Some underlying caramelized malt complemented the orange citrus again which has some tropical fruit notes. I'm not detecting much pine at all with all the hoppiness. I almost want to say I'm tasting a lot of Citra with a hint of Simcoe, but I'm not sure about that. Regardless, it's tasty.

Mouthfeel: Nice carbonation. Surprisingly spicy on the palate. Lingering stickiness and hop oils on the teeth with a nice thickness to the beer as well.

Overall / Drinkability: Very drinkable, and dangerously so. I would not mind having another and I suspect I'd pay for it later. The alcohol in this is very well hidden. A Mondo Red Ale indeed! I will have to see about picking up a six pack of this sometime.

This seasonal red IIPA is a nice deep-amber color, and shows the slightest amount of haze and sparse effervescence; its large, pebbly, ancient-ivory-colored head leaves excellent sticky bands and cavelets of lacing. The nose is medium in intensity: sweet/spicy florals, more subtle citrus and hints of pineapple juice backed by lightly caramelly malt and significant alcohol overtones. The palate leads with mildly-bitter pineapple juice and hints of bready caramel; mid-palate the emerging candy-like florals merge with a deepened, surprisingly dark malt flavor to produce a dominant candy toffee flavor that rides atop pineapple, citrus and grassy hop notes and a significant boozy undertow. The bitterness increases to a moderate level, working with the alcohol to dial back the malt-centricity; notwithstanding their efforts, this beer lands a fair ways on the malty side of the balance. Retrogustative olfaction is grassy pineapple. Mouthfeel is big for the medium body, and the texture is sticky/creamy, surprisingly thick and slightly peppery from the well-expressed carbonation. (12 oz bottle, 43 days after pkg)

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a clear brownish orange with a small off-white head. The aroma was an excellent blend of grass, malt, hops and citrus. The taste was an excellent melding of citrus, malt and hops. One of the best beers I have had in months. Outstanding.

Pours a deep copper red color with a thick foamy head. Slightly hazy. Head retention is very good. Lacing is excellent. Nice malty, piney aroma. Hints of caramel. More like a DIPA. Very malty taste with a nice transition to a piney hop, ending in a very smooth, caramel like taste. There is a hint of citrus in there, maybe more with the aftertaste. This is a medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. A true joy to drink. Very surprised with this one.

Besides just a little sweeter than I would like, this amber ale could easily top what I have tried so far in the Amberscope. This smooth mouth feel is almost unparaelleled in other beers I have tried. Definitely very enjoyable and very good overall, but the sweetness really pops and that does takes some of its excellence away because the malt will then be felt less.

Pours a copper brown/red. Smell is of malt and hops. Taste is pretty sweet, full bodied with lots of fruit. Tastes similar to maximus and undercover shutdown ale, lagunitas seems to have a pretty similar profile for these kind of beers. Overall tasty but if you've had one lagunitas 7% + abv you've probably had them all.

Pours deep burnt orange with ruby edges and one and a half finger off white head of fluffy bubbles. Nose of caramel, bready malt, grapefruit, ripe peach, and resin. Up front there's typical lagunitas sweetness, caramel, peach, pineapple, grapefruit, lingering bitterness that starts mid palate. Very nice.

Really liked aspects of the beer independently, but not ot as a whole. After three I found that it almost became cloyingly sweet. Don't dislike, but it's kind of a hit it and quit it beer for me personally.

I decided to give this brew a try after reading the mostly positive reviews. I have to say, I am impressed. Definitely one of the better beers I have had in awhile. I poured it into a tulip glass, and the first thing I noticed was the beautiful dark copper color and a nice creamy colored head, about 2 fingers in length. I would also like to mention the temperature of the beer was probably around 50-60 degrees, not sure exactly how much, but this beer was only in my fridge for about an hour before I decided to give it a try.

Upon taking my first sip, I noticed the subtle and pleasant aroma of the hops. The beer itself is not as hoppy, or bitter as I expected. What I tasted the most was the malts coming through, to give it a slightly sweet, yet pleasant and clean finish.

Lastly,

I was suprised to find out about the High ABV rating, for a beer that is almost 9% ABV it sure went down smooth. Overall, good rating, and would drink again!

Lucky indeed!

L: Pours a rich bronze with a fingers worth of off white head. Clear and transparent when held up to the light. S: Nose is full of honey, bready malt, floral essence, and heaps of grapefruit. T: Mostly follows the nose, but richer. Caramel, bread up front; the hops brighten in the middle with citrusy, grapefruity, slightly bitter on the tongue, begging you to dislike it, when the malt jumps back in with a honey, crackery finish that all but screams Red Ale. M: medium, carbonation is good but a bystander to the big flavor profile. Pretty dry, given the size of the malt presence. O: A very good, drinkable Red. As advertised, "Mondo Large". I never seem to be disappointed with Lagunitas. Then again, I must be lucky, indeed.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. No date noted in bottle. Nice Amber orange color with a 2 finger head that fades slow and leaves nice lacing. You can taste the malt up front and some bitter hops but not much. The earthy malt dominates for sure. A nice drinking beer but I probably would have 1 because of the maleness and 8.8%abv.

Do you like Lagunitas? Have you noticed that every other beer they makes tastes pretty similar and awesome? Then drink this! Maltier, chewier, richer, but unmistakably Lagunitas.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass not sure when it was bottled, but I am sure it is on it, but not enough patience to search. Pours a gorgeous dark amber, with a stick two finger white head, that leaves loads of lace.

Smell is caramel, hard candy, apple, toffee, pine, and grapefruit.

Taste follows caramel, apple, hard candy toffee, biscuit upfront and finishes with pine and grapefruit.

Mouthfeel is medium at least, moderate carbonation, a tad dry, and really nice drinkability for its size.

Overall this is a very nice Hoppy Red that stands out for price and quality, as I come to expect from Lagunitas.
