Hazy red color with a foamy off-white head. The aroma is hoppy, with earthy, slightly spicy hops. The taste is balanced and bitter. Some warmth comes out as you drink the beer. It's like a strong, red, imperial IPA, with a bit of added malt. Full in body and nicely drinkable, but not exceptionally interesting.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into tulip glass. Bottled on March 22, 2016..

L- Deep amber, great clarity, two finger light khaki head.

S- Some malty sweetness, dank citrus.

T- Similar to aroma, nice maltiness without being to sweet, nice citrus, light touch of roast, medium bitterness, lingering medium pine.

F- Medium carbonation, not to syrupy.

O- Very nice combo of malt and hops, you really can't go wrong with a fresh Lagunitas beer.

12 ounce bottle into an oversized tulip.

I dare you to find fault with Lagunitas' beer's appearances. These beers are always gorgeous. Perfect clarity, bright colored copper color. Frothy head. Flawless.

This beer followed Waldo's and that was a mistake. Aroma simply can't compete. But it's nice. Prominent malt presence with a dank and resinous hop presence and hints of fruit. My brain was so programmed to expect some Lagunitas juiciness that this aroma just left me wanting.

Flavor is an oddity for me too. Really big on the malts. That's surprising for Lagunitas. This reminds me more of an ESB almost. Biscuity, buttery, sweet malts are all over this. Got some spiciness like rye and notes of caramel. Citrus builds at the finish.

Burly feeling with initial sweetness followed by spiciness, resin and bitterness. It's a big beer that feels big and has a spicy bite.

In the minority here, but I didn't love this. Much more malt than I care for in the style. I can't deny it's a good beer but it doesn't scratch my itch.

Poured a beautiful copper red/orange with a thin tan head which left decent lacing on the glass. Heady aromas of grapefruit and papaya in the bouquet and flavors of grapefruit from start to finish. A very slight sweetness and a hefty mouth feel contributed by the barley malts, ending with a slightly dry finish. Truly a mondo large red ale!

Wow, what a great aroma. Grapefruit predominantly with other citrus notes. And it looks great - tons of lacing, good head retention. Clear reddish maple.

Somewhat thick feel, fruity flavor (grapefruit dominates). Some solid bitterness at the end.

Something different for sure, put it on your radar.

Look (4): The head on this guy is super impressive. Retains well, it's huge and is a white frothy color. An amber and reddish hue, slightly hazy.

Smell (4.25): All Imperial Red Ales smell amazing to me. Smells biscuity and bready like, sweet and malty. Reminds me of a delicous pastry you may have in the morning. Some pine like bitterness.

Taste (3.75): Malted toasted bread. Orange citrus and biscuits are also there. Basically everything you get in the aroma as well as a big bitter ending.

Mouthfeel (3.5): Medium to medium plus bodied. Scrubbing kind of feel against the tongue from the big carbonation. Very dry. That or my mouth is just dry because I live in the desert.

Overall (3.75): Liked it but didn't love it. One of those beers that smells better then it tastes. I'm beginning to see a trend with these Imperial Red Ales...

Enjoyed from the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This fine red ale pours a bright ruby touched amber with a fantastic head of off white foam that settles to a thick ring, thick layer, and excellent lacing. Nose of big juicy pink grapefruits, mangoes, and sweet caramel malts. Flavors follow the nose with sugar touched fresh grapefruit and mango on all sides, sweet caramel malts balance it all together in the middle and rear, and finishes with a heavy handed citrus and herbal hop note. Nice mouth feel, medium high carbonation making for great session ability, and a bitter citrus aftertaste. Well balanced. Very nice.

Picked this up over the weekend and while it is a decent beer, there are many other Lagunitas beers that I feel are much better. This is just average.

Edit; 2nd x around I enjoyed this a bit more.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Malt-forward body, which is cut by notes of grapefruit, lemon, pine. Pours a clear copper with a thick, 2-finger, off-white head. Palate is malt body, with a blend of piney and citrus hops. The amber element is light, which suits my palate well (not a huge fan of the style in general). The body is medium to thick (all that malt goes a long way). Overall, it's a very solid beer, that doesn't overdo the amber/red side of things. Tastes like a malty IPA still toweling off from an amber shower.

Not my favorite style. Aroma is far more hop forward than amber malt, with grapefruit juice, pith, and dank resin dominating. There's quite a bit of amber malt fruitiness that surfaces late.

Flavor is grapefruit juice dominant initially, fading to resin, herbal, and earthy hops mid palate, and finishing lightly malty sweet, with that characteristic amber malt fruitiness. I'd like it a lot more if that herbal character didn't linger.

House Lagunitas yest OVERLOAD. not bad, but not true to the style. Might get again if I see nothing else, but if you're looking for a true red ale, then look elsewhere.

A very nice red ale and I am not usually one to pick them up. Doesn't necessarily have that over powering Lagunitas hoppy taste, but has a nice fruity blend of tastes. I definitely enjoy this beer while kicking it on the porch w/ a nice twist of something different from Lagunitas!

Gorgeous maple brown color with plenty of cakey off white head.

Dank piney, orange hops with plenty of caramel malt backbone.

Medium body with loose, creamy feel.

Decent bitterness level with nascent malt sweetness. Treacle and lychee fruit nuttiness. Lingering pine and citrus. Ranks high for drinkability, which is attributable to a great balance of flavors.

Red Ale? Ok. Call it what you want. Lots of sticky pine resin in the nose and taste. Some bitter citrus too, with some sweet caramel malt. Tastes a lot like many of Lagunitas brews--delicious. Maximus, Brown Shugga, Undercover, Little Sumpin Extra--very little to separate them. But all very good, so no complaints here.

Look is good. Smell is predominantly grapefruit. Taste is very citrusy and bitter. A tad malty sweetness. It is amazing. Only issue is the very strong alcohol taste.

I always expect good brews from Lagunitas, but this one great exceeded expectations.

It is real purdy. All reddish light brown - exactly what a red should be. Lace up the wazoo too. The aroma is strong and hoppy, and not just finishing hops, you can tell there are hops and malts having a good time in there from the smell.

The taste is very large. All malty and hoppy. Tangy, slightly sharp and with a slight bite. The whole package is big and sticks around nicely.

I will need to get more of these!

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours copper with solid clarity; fluffy light tan head that fades leaving great retention and nice lacing. The aromas are full of caramel malts along with some citrus notes. The hops are there, but not overwhelming like most of Lagunitas's hoppy brews. The flavors seem to follow the nose. The malts seem to shine. Lots of caramel notes. Some alcohol notes, but it's not hot or boozy at all. Some orange notes along with some pine. Mouthfeel is nice. It's on the lighter side of full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's smooth and easy to drink.

This is a solid red ale. It might not be a crazy hop bomb like Lagunitas is known for. It's more of a traditional example of the style, which is cool. I personally like their Imperial Red Ale much more, but this is still okay.

Bottled day 82 of 2016, poured into a tulip glass.

A - Clear, crimson orange/red mix, with a one and half finger fluffy head that retains well.

S - Dank, resinous hops, citrus/orange, faint bread.

T - Much more balanced in the taste than the nose, the red ale aspect/malt comes through, though the orange/citrus flavor lurks underneath. A touch of heat, with the a decent dose of bitterness on the finish.

M - Heft is medium, carbonation is medium

O - Not sure where the difference lies between this and the Imperial Red, but I found the Imperial Red to be slightly superior. This is no slouch in the category either.

I love lagunitas. It's the pioneer beer for me. It inspired my need to brew my own and opened up my palate to crafted ales and lager. However this beer imo don't stand out like what I'm used to from them. However a nice tasting thick mouth feel brew, it lacked it's own independence. Imo this tastes like there sessions ipa (a fractional ipa) day time ipa. Almost exactly. However 2 later and I'm jamming out to Bob Marley and can't stop socializing with my mates.

L: Clear, deep copper color with two fingers of head. Sticky lacing.

S: Hints of fruit, piney hop, rich malt

T: Subtle fruity notes with a nice boozy, malty backbone. The malt sweetness and hop bitterness are very well balanced.

F: Medium body.

O: Lagunitas does not disappoint. This is a complex and well-balanced beer. I'm not a big red ale drinker, but this one might just open up a whole new world for me.

Amber in color with thick foamy head. Sticky lacing coats the glass. Citrusy aroma of grapefruit, citrus strong in the taste also. No hint at the alcohol, this one is almost all hops, yet surprisingly smooth.

Appearance: Clear, toned copper in color, crowned with a fairly large and dense off-white head. The lacing is modest and finely-beaded, coating the glass walls.

Aroma: A dense aroma of dark caramel and grapefruit greets a deep inhalation. Lesser notes of brown sugar and dark fruit are notable as well.

Taste: Opens with equal measures of dark caramel and profound grapefruit and citric hops. Considering that there are nearly eighty IBUs on offer, Lucky 13 manages the remarkable feat of seeming quite well-balanced. Besides the omnipresent hops and dark caramel, there is a strong undercurrent of sweet alcohol, which offers a gracious warming. Then, too, there are notable flavors of brown sugar and dark fruit, mostly plums. A bit of bitter apple rind appears as well. Late in the taste, the caramel and hops vie for supremacy, with the result being a gracious draw. Finishes with a lingering note of moderate grapefruit rind bitterness.

Mouth feel: Smooth and soft with a body that is quite full.

Drinkability/notes: An excellent example of the style, and quite reasonably priced at $4.49 for a standard twenty-two bomber.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twenty-two ounce brown glass bomber, served in a New Belgium chalice.

S: Grassy, piney hops, caramel malts, light fruit
T: Starts with malt with light sweetness and then pine bitterness takes over with traces of light fruit.
F: Very creamy, full body, medium carbonation.
O: Big strong malt flavors and body balance assertive hop flavors for a very drinkable large red ale.

On tap at rock 'n brews El Segundo poured into nonic pint glass. Red amber in color with off-white head that clings. Smells of passion fruit and booze. Tastes about the same with good crisp pine and carbonation.
