The Beers of California

Bottled Date:

A: Golden clear with an off white head which leaves a capillary network of lace on the glass.

S: Pine freshness, flowers, citrus zest, and California summer heat. Traces of bread and sugar attempt to shrine through and fight the smothering hop weight.

T: Clean, balanced and surprisingly smooth. Fruit comes through as grapefruit peel and pineapple. The fruit fades to a clean and aromatic bitterness which is less pronounced than expected. The malt is in the back doing its best to hold things together with a bready and sugary sweetness. The finish is warm and somewhat dry.

M: Medium bodied and moderately carbonated. The linger is there as expected given the lacing on the glass.

O: Great hop presence in a well balanced brew. If I could pick a beer to represent the DIPA style this would have to be it: widely distrubuted, big and clean with both spice and fruit complexity.

Wow as soon as you crack this open you get an immediate power punch of hop aromas. A true variety here too many to list just about everything you would expect for an American Double IPA. Occasionally you get a subtle sweet malty tone.

Color wise this beer is light amber in color not bad but nothing spectacular either.

Taste- Hops, hops, more hops, and add some more hops the name fits this beer perfectly. Despite the fact that this beer is so hoppy and has 102 IBU's its not insanely bitter. Theres a good balance from the malt to keep this from being brutal if the hops had been left to their own.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into an Allagash cervoise glass. No visible date stamp, but I bought it at the brewery two days ago so I'll assume it's fresh.

A: A finger of tight, creamy head tops a golden-clear beer with light effervescence. Heavy lacing.

S: Smells like hop resin and marijuana. Intense and pleasure (to me). Lots of pine and citrus. Very West Coast.

T: "102 I.B.U. 4 U." And so it is. The hop extract makes for a clean, bitter, but somewhat boring beer. It's hoppy, dry, and tongue-scorching. This one will wreck your palette and for what? It's sort of stoopid. No much else to say about it...

M: Prickly, dry, and enjoyable.

O: I liked this beer, but if you don't like hops, avoid it like the plague. Blisteringly bitter in an uninspiring sort of way. I'd stick to actual hops rather than extract.

Poured from bottle into Grimbergen chalice.
Modes head on golden, clear brew.
Aroma of hops, grass, light melon.
Significant carbonation and full mouthfeel.
Flavors of grassy hops, white grapefruit, slight cream of tartar, pepper, roasted malts.
I'm not giving lots of flavors but that's OK because this is a straightforward hop bomb, and rather well balanced. I've had this many times and at this price point it's one of the best hoppy beers around.
