Notes: Seasonally Unexpected wet-hopped juicy ale.

Hops are good, fresh hops are better, wet hops are best. We say 'wet hops' because they have not been dried after harvest. We say 'better' because they possess the fullest expression of hop flavor; vine-fresh. Since harvest only occurs one time a year, achieving year-round wet-hop flavor has become the Holy Grail pursuit of hoppy brewing. Our quest led us to develop a new hop liquification process which Born Again Yesterday first proved damn-near divine. Today we're changing things further: bringing that Seasonally Unexpected wet-hop flavor to an unfiltered, juicy nectar that's somewhere between a solid and a liquid... a Phase Change of sorts.

Phase Change is one juicy game changer... it's an unfiltered, wet-hop ale packed full of lupulin-drenched Simcoe, Citra & Mosaic hops. But wait... wet hops in Spring? Indeed! The brewers of Lagunitas have discovered a way to keep wet hops fresh, in any season. Science!

The beer looked like a standard New England IPA. The body was pale gold in color and hazy when held against the light. The aroma had a lot of melon up front. This was followed by some mango and a touch of hay in the smell. The taste was quite citric. The flavor reminded me of passionfruit and tangerine. There was a pith like bitterness in the finish. The feel was soft and density medium. I liked it well enough, it didn't seem all that different from others of the style that are not wet hop based. In the end, I am not sure the extra effort amounted to all that much.

12 oz bottle from TJ's. Pours hazy golden with tall, long lasting, fluffy white head and lively carbonation. Aroma is of citrusy hops, bready malt, mango and peaches. Body is full and crisp. Herbal hops dominate the palate with bready malt and tropical fruit provide nice balance. Finish is long, dry and juicy. Great brew.

12oz bottle coded 135 9 2 (bottled 18 days ago Chicago) poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 7.4% ABV per label. The beer pours slightly hazy orange amber in color with off white head. The head recedes to quarter inch cap and leaves plenty of lacing. The aroma is mildly juicy with some grapefruit peel and pine. The taste is semisweet citrus, citrus peel, pine and dank all rolled up together. The finish is moderately bitter and mostly dry. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and adequately carbonated. Overall, very good. Maybe not as pungent or bitter as Born Yesterday, but good in it's own right.

This brew has that Lagu malt bill, tastes like fruitcake. Pretty descent overall but I’m guessing this is an older batch, like maybe 2 months past it’s prime. Muted hops, not juicy at this stage, drinkable but not memorable. I haven’t bothered to figure at the date coding on the bottles, but I consistently end up with some old IPAs when I get these at the local store. On tap, Lagunitas is great, crap shoot when buying a sixer

This beer pours avlear gold with a normal head. The aroma has dank cannabis, with mango, tangerine, guava, and melon. The flavor has a big burst of tangerine and guava, with mango, melon, and a little tingle of bitterness. The mouthfeel is full with spritzy carbonation. Overall a really delicious beer with good vibrancy and balance.

A: Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass. Body is hazy tangerine-orange with a 1-finger white head on top.

S: Nice nose of sweeter tropical fruits (Mango, papaya), some ripe melon and sweet oranges.

T: Follows the nose, with the sweeter flavors prevailing - mango, clementine oranges, orange peel. Hint of bread doughy-malt foundation. Finishes with modest bitterness - not exactly lemony, but think citrus peel. Also a touch of "green" or earthy hop bitterness as well

M: Nice velvet-smooth feel to this one. Carbonation is modest.

O: Very good. Been drinking predominantly NEIPAs of late, this one surprised me with its feel. Good flavors too.

Picked up a 6 pack of this last month. I think I just drank the last of it, not sure, might be one hiding out in one of the fridges still. Quick review: its no born yesterday, that beer is significantly better than this one.

Pours a light orange color with 1/3" white head. Lotta lace down the side on this one. Slightly hazy. Aroma wasn't all that bursting with hops. In fact, I don't even think they claim what hops are used here on the label. Has mostly a Simcoe bitterness that is noticeable, claims of Citra and Mosaic make me think that they must be used in the minority comparatively, or simply that whatever wet hop preservation black majick they are using isn't working as well as they think.

Taste has a pronounced bitterness and noticeable alcohol sting. There aren't off flavors as much as the flavors fail to reach the zenith that is born yesterday. This beer is pretty far away from that one from a quality of taste/aroma perspective. Back end feels stickier, lacking a drying or crisp component. The price was nice, but kind of falls into only the slightly better than average position, and definitely far below what Lagunitas has proven they can do with hoppy beers.

Hazy pour, huge citrus nose, tasty frothy head. Pale orange-yellow color. Is this YAHIPA (Yet Another Hazy IPA)? Give it was brewed in late spring, well before domestic hops come on the market, the team at Lagunitas has done yeoman work at making an out-of-season fresh hopped IPA work and work well. Lemon and mango tastes, grapefruit as well. Slightly sweet bitterness and a longfinish. Good malt base. We'll seek out more while it's still in the rotation.

Poured from pounder into tulip good 2+ finger cream colored head, great retention and lacing. Clear golden in the glass, slight chill haze. I have to do some blind test on Lagunita beers. I swear when it comes to my nose it has that distinct Lagunitas smell. Smells of pine, ripe pineapple, citrus (grapefruit predominantly) and some caramel. Taste sweet caramel malt, pineapple, orange and peach, finishes with a very mild bitterness and a little on the dry side. Very drinkable beer, this beer ticks off everything I look for in an IPA, good malt bill that shines thru, good hop aroma and the hops and malt deliver on the taste. It isn't cloyingly sweet, and the bitterness is there to shut it down at the end and make you want to go back for more.

Wet hopped something something? Sure, I’ll bite.
Pours from the bottle a clearer than expected gold tan. Aroma and to some extent the taste are more “tropical” than classic ipa, I didn’t think it was quite wet hopped but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Odd green onion aftertaste that came out of nowhere.
