Pours a nice deep copper amber color with slight head. Hits the nose with a lot of booze and hops. The taste is roughly the same. A lot of hop forward with alcohol left over. Right up my alley. Mouthfeel is thick and oily.

= Another great offering for a hop head by Lagunitas. They never disappoint with ipas and strong ales. Goes down way too easily for its abv.

A: Amber with a rich tan head and very nice lacing.
N: Malt, hops, some burnt sugar, and citrus.
T: Follows the nose, very malty ale with nice citrus backing and great bite/dryness.
M: Medium
O: A great ale, very nice flavors and bite, super easy to consume at this ABV, cheers to Lagunitas!

Love it. I always pick this up when I can find it (I'm thinking it's seasonal? I only tend to see it around once or twice a year.) I'm a big fan of most Lagunitas beers and their typical bitter & hoppy profile -- this one is no exception. It isn't one of their ridiculous ones, but with Lagunitas, you gotta know what you're getting into.

American Strong Ale. Pours a rich, darker amber color with about a half inch head. Taste is full-bodied and a little citrusy, not entirely like an IPA, goes down kinda dry and maybe even a little harsh, but plenty drinkable. Mouthfeel is great, to me. This particular season/finding, it's a 9.7% ABV, but last year, my finding was 9.3%. Either way, this is one high octane strong ale. I enjoy one at the end of a night... maybe two... three is going a little overboard.

My year-round goto and overall favorite from Lagunitas is probably Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale, but if this were available all the time, I'd gladly make the switch. For fans of IPA, Little Sumpin' Sumpin', Sucks, Kronik/Censored -- hoppy & citrusy, gets you drunk.

It has the signature Lagunitas smell but somewhat more deep and intense. As much sweet malt as resinous citrusy hop. The definition of dank, unless youve scored some really good weed. It is a medium dark amber color. There is a sweet note that hits you first then the bitterness of the hops flow over it and a slight alcohol warmth comes up your throat. It’s not overly complex but the intensity is phenomenal. I think 2 or maybe 3 would be your limit. I’ve only drank about 1/2 a bottle and I feel like I’ve downed a sixer of Heineken. Wow

only remotely in the ipa family. like a reviewer has written, the hops and malt are nicely in sync, and the alcohol bite is understated but clearly there, but I don't think it's one of LG's better brews, not much in the way of charisma/complexity.

Dark amber or light brown appearance with off white head that disipates quickly. Aroma is a nice malt. Taste is a slightly sweet smooth malt without any bitterness or alcohol bite.

I enjoy the complexity of the beer. At first I wondered what exactly was going on, but the creamy, head-first caramel notes were entoxicating, and I no longer cared to classify this beer. It is deceptively strong-willed @ 9.7% abv, so sip responsibly.

This is the rare Lagunitas offering I did not enjoy or even find interesting. All I got from this one was the buzz from the alcohol. I did not get a lot of depth in the flavor at all in this. Just a lot of alcohol. Maybe I had some bad bottles.

12 oz bottle poured into a shaker pint.

Amber. Good clarity. 1 finger of creamy off-white head. Light carbonation.

Grapefruit zest, pine, caramel, toffee, candy sugar, and orange rind.

Caramel and toffee maltiness with sprinkles of candy sugar. Grapefruit zest, orange rind, and resinous pine. Hints of peach and passion fruit.

Medium-plus bodied, smooth, warming, juicy, off-dry, and moderately bitter.

Top notch Strong Ale. Buy it!

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a bronze color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is very mild, a touch of citrus. Taste is of piney hops, malts, alcohol is present. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall ain't bad, but I was expecting much more from this beer.

This brew delivers like its cousin--the Arrogant one, albeit with a bit more booze, and a bit less refinement. Big malt backbone--check. In-your-face hop explosion--check. Spectacular rocky head and solid lacing--check. Well-hidden booze with a bitter hammer of a finish--check. This is a tasty American Strong, although it gets just a little sticky and boozy for the second half of the glass.

Pours a wonderful, crystal clear copper body with vivacious carbonation, a fizzy white head that fades to circles. Nose offers a hearty, pungent stab of pine oil and citrus oil, slightly perfumey. Next to zero nuance here, not that it's bad. The taste is also the essence of hop alpha acids- citrus and pine. There's also the glimmer of biscuity, toasty malt that offers a small amount of sweetness to cut the resounding bitterness. The body is slick, biting from the high bitterness.
Pure hoppy bliss, with pillars of malt that mostly stay out of the way but do show their potential on the taste. Straightforward power, no funny business.

I am not very familiar with beers but read that a good, hoppy one can increase breast milk production. I saw this at the store and have boughten the Lagunitas brand for my boss but hadn't seen the Undercover before. Had no idea it had higher alcohol content but could definitely taste it upon first sip. At first, I was like oh sh*t, this is too strong for my sorry mommy ass but by sip three, I was feeling A-OK. Flavors are good, pairs well with some buttery multi-grain toast at 4 a.m. I gave the look a 4 but didn't know if it's referring to bottle/label presentation or color of the beer. The 4 was for the label but it should probably be less. Whenever I buy a 6 pack of Lagunitas (for my boss), there seems to always be at least one with a jacked up label. Anyhoo, if you like strong beer with a lot of flavor, try Undercover Investigation and shut it downnn.
