22 oz bottle into Deschutes tulip snifter

A - Nice and foamy. Nice lacing, good retention. Off-white clouds float on top of a deep red beer. Hold it up to the light and go "Ooh, ah," because the clarity is glowing and beautiful. Really, try it. It's fun.

S - Resiny hops, sweet grapefruit, citrus rind, dankness backed with dark malts. And something that reminds me of slightly burnt caramel corn. Quite good.

T - Beautiful bitterness, but I don't get as much complexity in the flavor. Aroma is pretty key to this beer - choose your glass accordingly. Still, there is a nice hop presence of grass and citrus rind, and hints of those elements listed for the aroma. A bit more of those dark malts - almost like fresh roasted coffee in the background.

M - Perhaps a tad watery, but the bitterness creates a really enjoyable tingling mouthfeel. Nicely carbonated. Feels good.

O - Oh, I like this one a lot. The story of the name is pretty cool, and my favorite American band is probably Wilco. So, it all adds up on top of this being a GREAT beer, to being a really fun drinking experience. I recommend drinking it warmer, at least 50 degrees. But, it's also good cold. And make sure you pour it in a glass that will emphasize the aroma. And enjoy.

Tasted On: 11-15-2011
Freshness: Not indicated
Packaging: 22 oz. brown bottle
Glassware: Tulip
Purchased: Received in a trade

A: Pours hazy brown, with a finger's worth of off-white head. Head retention is low; lacing is fair.

S: Aromas are made up of spicy hops and sweetness and caramel notes of rich malts. Very pleasantly balanced.

T: The taste is strong but not overwhelming. The balance in the aromas carries through to the flavors, as this beer is malty but also hoppy. Earthy hops and caramel malts come forth more as the beer warms.

M: Carbonation is high and body is thin to medium. Finishes dry and bitter, with some alcohol warming.

O: Nicely balanced and enjoyable beer. Pairs well with cheese.
