Unrefined Shugga'Unrefined Shugga'
Notes: Unrefined Shugga’ is our winter-warming, holidaze BarleyWine, clocking in at 10% alc./vol. It’s chockfull of malted barley, malted wheat, Munich malt, and crystal malts, then generously dry-hopped with Simcoe, Columbus, Cascade, and Centennial hops. Unrefined Shugga’ gets its name from the addition of whole cane Panela sugar. It’s basically the holidays in a glass.

12oz bottle. No dating information found.
Clear, medium amber colored body. Long lasting two finger to half a finger off white head. Good sheeting of lacing on the non-drinking side.
Aroma is faint with more malts than hops.
Taste is more of a punch than the smell, with sugary toasted malts (carmelized) jousting with floral and citrus hops. Strong and bitter at the end. The sweet cane and hops trail off in the aftertaste.
More than medium mouth feel. Has a numbing effect on the top of the tongue. Very good supportive carbonation.
Chose this when wanting a cane sugar malty punch to the palate. The hops are equally as ludicrous. How unrefined indeed. Higher ABV% is super evident.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip.

Pours a burnt golden/copper with bubbles racing upwards; great clarity and transparency; fluffy light khaki head that falls slowly leaving great thick retention and sticky frothy lacing. Great color.

The aromas have a nice amount pineapple leading the way. Some burnt rubber. Hints of caramel and toffee. Malts are there.

The flavors follow the nose perfectly. More pineapple leading the way. Lots of damp grass. Some pine resin. More caramel. Some rye and black pepper in the mix. Subtle spiciness. Great hop flavors. Solid bitterness. The cane sugar really comes through without coming off as sweet, but there's a subtle sweetness. Malts do their thing. Mild warmth in the finish, but the alcohol quietly goes unnoticed. It drinks somewhat big, but it's ultimately dangerously drinkable.

Mouthfeel is nice. It's full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's thick, slick, creamy, fluffy, smooth and slightly sharp.

This is an awesome brew. It drinks like a Double IPA, but it can pass for a hoppy barleywine. Great hop profile. Great aromas and flavors. Now this is truly classic Lagunitas. I've always been a big fan of their Brown Shugga', but this version takes to an even higher level. Well done, it's very impressive. Maybe I'm being a little generous with my numerical score, but I really do love this beer. I'm truly surprised that this beer isn't unanimously loved, but to each their own.

Appearance - clear copper body with tan head

Smell - pine, malts, brown sugar, grapefruit, honey

Taste - malts, grapefruit, honey, toffee, brown sugar, pine

Mouthfeel - medium plus bodied, medium carbonation, sticky upfront with the toffee sweetness, back end has the pine and grapefruit, flavors linger

Overall - nice strong ale here, the body is sturdy, flavors are good, this is a nice sipper for those chilly evenings. Certainly worth a try.

Price point - $2.99/12 oz single

i like this brewery, i like the brown shugga and only wish i could compare these 2 side by side. dont listen to the haters - give it a try!
L: from the bottle and it's classic lagunitas. just fine, thanks.
S: sweet, hint of pineapple. caramel
T: delivers on the nose & brown shugga lineage. pineapple, caramel, hoppy bitterness pokes through. works for me. if you're looking for "balance", look elsewhere.
F: smooth and rich
O: what can i say? some will love it, some will hate it. put me in the former. sure as heck aint no "86".

Pours a clear copper/amber with a large long lasting cream colored head. Fantastic lacing. Aroma is mild caramel malt and hops. Flavor bolder than the nose. Sugar caramel malt and bitter hop finish. Plenty boozy. Feel is medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall a mighty fine beer.

12oz bottle
date stamped 302 1 2
L: deep amber-red body, thinner frothy tan head
S: grain, caramel, brown sugar, floral & piney hops
T: rich & flavorful: caramelized grain, cane sugar, zesty citrus, pine resin, toffee, mild fruitiness
F: full body, ample carbonation, some residual sweetness, but the finish is bitter pine lingering on the palate
O: I wish I could try this side-by-side with Brown Shugga’ for comparison. This was good, but if I remember correctly, the brown sugar gives that one a little more depth of flavor

Poured into a 13 oz Snulip glass and I don’t have the energy to figure out when it was bottled and rather sad that the price is the same it used to be to purchase 6 and now you get 4. Pours an attractive brownish amber with a 2 finger off white head that leaves thick streaks of lace, with nice retention. 4.5

Aroma I still get brown sugar, toffee, caramel, a little breadyness, and honey. 4

Taste follows brown sugar, caramel, toffee, some breadyness, and honey. 4

Mouthfeel is above average, maybe a little sticky not dry, plenty of life, and at 10% ABV it goes down really easy. 4.25

Overall this is really good, not sure I could tell any difference from OG, but still tasty stuff. 4

First pass with this last night; might come back to edit after #2. But since it's a pricey 4-pack available for a limited time, haste was in order.

Pours a gorgeous, red/amber with minimal head. Nose is pretty heavy on the alcohol, burnt sugar. Taste -- and this is what I want to revisit -- was not very complex. Alcohol, bitter hop bite, not terribly sweet. Just one-note. Feel was surprisingly light and easy despite the amounts of sugars. Off to do some situps before the next one.

12oz bottle served in a tulip. "301 1 1" is on the neck of the bottle, which I think translates to bottled on 2021-10-28.

Pours a clear toffee color with a huge head, creamy, long lasting. Smell is grapefruit rind, floral resin bitterness, and toffee and sweetness.

Taste is caramel and toffee sweetness, tons of citrus bitterness, really the whole story is just bouncing back and forth between the two extremes. It's a balance like two elephants on opposite sides of a toothpick.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly light and clean for the strength and sweetness, though still somewhat sticky. Overall, I'm really liking this beer.

Pours a cloudy copper color with a slow building off white head, leaving spotty lacing. Not a very aromatic brew, some caramel malts and hops. Caramel, toffee, the sugar is noticeable but not overly sweet. Medium bodied, nicely carbonated.
