Picked up as a part of a build-your-own-sixer at my local liquor store. No bottled on date. Poured right from the fridge into a pint glass.

L: Pours warm honey amber, quite clear, with a good amount of visible carbonation. The two-inch eggshell head sticks around for a while and leaves nice cling on the glass.

S: A lot of pine hop notes in the nose, along with sweetbread malt notes underneath. There's a grassy and funky quality to the bouquet, along with a touch of black licorice.

T: The hops hit the palate with a force, right out of the gate. There's pine there, along with more of that grassy/earthy funk. Some sweetbread notes in the front, with just the right amount of yeast/banana bread. The middle is also occupied by the hops, which seem to turn more resinous as the taste develops. Some clear alcohol and the underlying malt carries the flavor to the back, which is dominated by the resinous/earthy hops. For all that's going on, this is a very nicely balanced flavor.

F: Medium-bodied, smooth, and bright/bitter. The hops leave a stick, but it's certainly not what I would describe as syrupy. This one goes back pretty easy for a beer with this high of an ABV.

O: While I enjoy Little Sumpin' Extra more, I'm very glad I picked this one up. This has a very different hop quality than many of the brews from Lagunitas, and the Westmalle makes for an IPA with a little more complexity than you often get from most American IPAs. This one is definitely worth seeking out.

*transferred from old notes - 12/28/2013*
12oz bottle poured into a stemmed tulip glass. Smells doughy, but sweet - oatmeal raisin cookies were the first thing that came to mind. Orange peel is the dominant scent, but there's a light raisin supporting note, as well as grassy, floral notes. It pours a hazy pale amber (on the yellow side of amber) with a thick white head that could easily be scooped out with a spoon. A medium heavy dose of bitter and sour hit the tongue initially with a healthy sweetness washing over the mouth. Some more of the yeast aroma comes out at first sipping as well as a whiff of alcohol. The taste is predominantly grassy, dank hops, but there is some sweetness to it in the form of grapes and/or sour cherries (maybe both?). There’s a rye-spiciness tucked in there too. The relatively dry, medium body beer doesn’t technically finish clean, but it’s surprisingly refreshing (almost minty) considering how strong the initial flavors come on. There’s a prevalent rye flavor in the finish. A nice puffy, cloud-like lacing remains on the empty glass.

Rich deep golden colored with an inch thick head of tightly packed off white head. Brussels lacing. The nose is fairly subdued but I get a bit of the acidic Belgian yeast with a hint of citrus hops. The taste is intensely bitter citrus hops in the front of the palate. As it hits the back of the palate you get a bit of that acidic champagne like dry Belgian yeast. The yeast also provides a nice crisp finish.
