Pours a traditional muted gold, moderate cap, slight carbonation. Aroma is a clash of old world / new world - it has traces of warm baked bread from Bavarian malt, but there is a hop addition that spoils the smell. Not extremely off-putting, but lacks that hearty embrace a good German bock should have. A little fusel in there too.

Flavor starts very malt heavy, big flavors of sticky pudding, butterscotch, and rye. The finish lacks the same punch, those big flavors fade quickly & it finishes with a bland hop sputter. Should have kept it classic, but Lagunitas always has to push those hop additions, and it really does no service to this particular brew.

At only 34.2 IBUs, the bitterness is atypically low for Lagunitas. Very big, boozy, and sweet with a thick, chewy mouthfeel from the wheat. The yeast imparts estery banana and pineapple notes that come together with the mouthfeel to give it a somewhat like a fruit juice cocktail-like quality with some hoppy spice peeking out from the background. As with most wheat beers, I recommend it with a lemon slice to cut the grainy finish and—in this case—brighten up the heavy sweetness. At its best, you get a tangy lemon slice pastry with a wallop that was brewed to knock your block off. Enjoy!

LAGUNITAS DOPPEL WEIZEN 7/20/17

A Lagunitas bomber oldie but one I have overlooked until now. Just purchased at a store known for its extensive stock, first I'd seen this one on a shelf for awhile.

Poured from the 22 oz. bottle into a Unibroue stemmed pilsner.

a: Nearly clear dark gold with an inch and a half frothy white head which receded to dense lacing and heavy surface foam.

s; Fruit cup leaning to pear.

t; Follows the nose with hefty biscuit malt undertones and a mild hop bite. Sweetish finish.

m; Medium plus, very good body and some carbonation tingle.

o; A substantial (even tempting to call it chewy) brew which is good for the style and covers its higher ABV well.

Look - hazy orange copper color with a slight white head
Smell - does not smell like a dopple Bock, it's hoppy and smells like a floural pale ale
Taste - Carmel malty with a very slight piney citrus note
Feel - medium body and carbonation
Overall - doesn't taste like Germaine anything, more like a American pale ale

Not bad, I can see what they are going for, but it has this muted and cardboard like flavor that makes me think that it might be the on the older side. The alcohol was well hidden and the drinkability wasn't bad, I just wish the flavors were a little brighter. I would buy this beer again, but I would make sure it's fresh.

Poured from 22 oz bottle slowly into a chilled glass mug. Nice cloudy amber colour with virtually no head until I was finished pouring. At that point a nice half inch of off white head developed. Smells of smooth wheat with some citrus and slight fruit. Taste is very crisp. Piney wheat and citrus. Great mouthfeel. Prost!

Pours a hazy dark gold with 1/2" head and mild lacing. Smells sweet, getting fruit, bread, wheat, citrus. This tastes amazing, very smooth with loads of sweetness, lots of fruity notes, bread/biscuit, some light citrus, and honey. This is a very full flavored beer but very easy on the palate. I am really happy with this one, it was way better than I expected and would get more of them whenever I see them around, awesome stuff.

22oz bottle served in a weizen glass. Pours a lovely burnished orange with a slight haze to the clarity and a fluffy, half-inch, bright white head. Nose expresses candied figs, light malts, a hint of citrus and faint earthy/herbal notes towards the back. It's all a bit heavy and lacking delicacy. Taste consistent with nose; however, candied citrus dominates the flavor profile and everything else is present, yet diminished albeit not in a bad way. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a pleasant, even carbonation and a kiss of acidity. Overall, not my favorite example of the style yet quite enjoyable and drinkable.

L: Poured from a bottle to a weizen glass. Had an amber color and a cloudy consistency. There was a 2 1/2 inch, foamy, long-lasting head. Pretty good lacing.

S: A decent aroma of wheat, light fruit, and some caramel.

T: Tasted of a fair amount of wheat, a little bit of caramel, pineapple (very noticeable in the finish), a little citrus (lemon, in particular), a bready quality, and pepper. For the most part, this is a solid flavor, but not an outstanding one. Needs to be a bit more assertive, but is still fairly tasty.

F: An average amount of carbonation with a mostly smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is an uneven beer in some respects, but is still drinkable. Worth a try.

Classic amber with a slight chill haze and a foamy, fuzzy clingy lace from a moderate off-white head.

Smell is really sharp citrus, pine, graham, and catty rug.

Taste is caramel, sweet biscuit, pine, with a medium froth.

This is way hoppier than it should be.

Our first go at this one. A hazy, bright amber pour with a tight head and sticky lacing. The aroma of malts and yeast come up and tickle the nose. It's quite tasty and the ABV is well hidden indeed. Taste is quite malty and good carbonation and mouthfeel. Enjoyed the short essay (in about 2 point type) on the side!

22oz bottle. I had this many years ago. Gave it a 3/5 overall rating without a review. Definitely time for a review!
A - tall ivory head slowly fades atop a clouded apricot colored ale
S - pineapple, banana, and mandarin, clovey yeast, honey
T - orangey citrus, mango, pineapple, light caramel, honey, banana, clove in the background
M - fuller body, moderate carbonation, finishes sweet with just a tad of bitterness
O - not your typical German Weizenbock, but what did I expect coming from Lagunitas? Good flavors with this one, very refreshing, even with the big ABV. Better than I remember it being.
