Pours a golden hazy orange with an off white head.

Sting of carbonation hits the nose, followed by banana, a floral bouquet, musty yeast, and orange/coriander.

It is full flavored with rounded mouth feel. A complex chewy brew.
Hits first with a sting of carbonation, then bitter herb hop flavor hits in the back of the mouth giving way to a bitter orange bite. Banana and rum flavors come through reminding me of Banana's Foster. Spice hits on the roof of the mouth with notes of cumin/nutmeg. Has a nutty, earthy flavor. This is a lively, interesting, complex beer. For me all the flavors don't quite come together in unity, but it is full flavored and worth a try.

Lagunitas Doppel Weizen is a limited release, so let's see if that a good thing or a bad thing.

A - Pours mostly headless with a hazy, almost pulpy tangerine body. I'm surprised by the lack of head given the Bavarian inspiration.

S - Strong plantain and overripe fruit sweetness with underlying iron aroma. The nose is all upfront, not much more blossoms out over time.

T & M - The flavor is very German, although a bit heavy on the malts. Ripe banana flavor dominates the palate, although the Lagunitas twist adds a kick of hop bitterness on the back end. A pretty straight-forward brew overall, with lingering bitterness and alcohol to throw off the balance just a touch on this effort.

O - A decent effort that I won't crave anytime soon. Still it's worth a try if you're wanting a 22 of a decent Bavarian style.

On tap at the Pony Bar, NYC. 8oz pour into mini nonic style glass.
Looks fantastic...hazy/cloudy deep orangey honey color with a nice thick head. Smells fantastic, orangey, weiss typical but alcohol is obvious.
Taste...you guessed it, fantastic. Absolutely packed with flavour. Aroma matches taste...easy finish with the high ABV. I absolutely loved this brew. Great personal twist on a beer staple.

A: cloudy orange color with white head that dissipated way too quickly. No head left after a few minutes from pouring.

S= spicy aroma with a hint of banana-hefe.

T= Very bold, with spicy notes. Finish displays way too much alcohol flavor to claim that this is a Bavarian style. This is an overly amped up Weizenbock that went a little too far in this reviewers opinion. Bavarian styles are about balance.

M= somewhat flat.

O= Up to this point I have been very fond of the Langunitas recipes but this one fell far short of the Langunitas reputation.

A= slightly cloudy rich golden with a nice foamy white head that rims & laces after a few minutes.

S= nice and bold, hefty yeast hit me up-front, then nice spices, some coriander, slight honey.

T= bold like a typical Lagunitas. Some traditional Weizenbock fans might think it's too potent for its style but it's great if you enjoy a good wheat beer with boldness. Yeasts, malts, light honey, complex spices.

M= somewhat cloying in the finish which is a detractor for me. Also a slight tinny flatness on the tongue.

O= a very decent beer in its style with some great high points. I have this feeling that it would be totally fantastic if aged for another half a year.

Bomber, no code.

Pours a deep, hazy straw-orange. The head is maybe a quarter-inch and short-lived. Not very Weizen-like.

The aroma is full of esters and alcohol, with notes of banana and vanilla.

The first thing I notice about this beer is a huge malt sweetness. Wow, this is a sweet wheat, probably too much so. But there's a lot of other great banana and spicy flavor going on. Big notes of clove and overripe fruit. The mouthfeel had some dextrinous weight to it, but no real carbonation to support it. These German wheat beer styles need more gas than 2-2.5 volumes, the standard for American ales.

Overall, I like the attempt at a Weizenbock, and this beer has a lot going for it flavor-wise. Dry it out and give it some more bubbles, and Lagunitas, we'd have a winner.

Poured from a 22-ounce bottle into a BitBurger nonic pint glass.

A: Dark, cloudy, orange yellow beneath a one and half finger head of white foam. Bits of sediment can be seen floating about the hazy, dense brew.

S: Very fruity and spicy with a bit of minty gum thrown in with the citrus fruits, banana, clove and wheat.

T: Sweet juicy and bready malts hit the palate first releasing a wave of fruity, citrus esters with a funky wheat twang. Lemon peel, coriander, white pepper and an ethyl alcohol flavor fuel the bitter, hot and slick sweet malt finish.

M: Full-bodied, slightly chewy and hot with alcohol and strong, malty spices. Bitterness is fairly low throughout but the boozy, fruity profile remains viscous.

O: A pretty enjoyable doppelweizen with the American brashness and unrefined wheat funk not found in its German ancestors. Standing at a hefty 9% ABV, this weizenbock if fruity and warming, nice for the fall season.

A shade lighter than most weizenbocks I've seen (or maybe it's just been too long since I've had this style), it's a bit cloudy and doesn't sport a very large head, but what's there is just a shade off white and nice enough. Liquid is washed-out rusty orange in color.

A healthy dose of musty, soggy banana in the aroma, and other, less definable fruit characteristics. Also bready, in the way weizens of various stripes can be. Nothing to suggest a beer of mindblowing proportions, but let's not judge until...

...the taste. Which is equally as fruit-laden as the aroma. Even more so, as it takes the banana, plus lots of pear, lots of peach, and some apple, and magnifies it against a foundation of rather sweet caramel-y malt. There's a hint of white pepper and a pinch of black pepper too, and without this subtle spicy character (which is surely partly thanks to the 9% alcohol) I'm afraid this beer would be too one-dimensional. But it's not, and I'm enjoying it.

Plenty of spritz in terms of carbonation, and the liquid itself is smooth and light-to-medium bodied. Even a little bit sticky. The alcohol/spice factor is up front most in the finish, where cinnamon also flashes across the tongue, and banana isn't far behind.

A sweet take on the style, both in terms of sucrose-like flavor "sweet" and just plain, "yeah, sweet!" Only complaint is that it's, well, a little too sweet. Would have liked a breadier, heartier element to shine through stronger, and maybe a tad less alcohol presence, but as is, more than good enough.

The color when poured in a pint glass was a hazy banana yellow with very little white foam a some lace on the side of the glass. The smell had a sweet caramel aroma with a hint of yeast. The flavor was of sweet caramel, bread yeast and hints of fruit and spices. Nicely balance compontents. Not overpowering with such high (9%), alcohol. What a pleasant surprise for this Doppel Weizen!

Review taken from notes.

This beer pours a nice golden yellow color. It has a nice finger of white head resting on top. The head has good retention, and it leaves a nice sheet of lace behind on the glass. The nose starts off with some nice wheat and caramel aromas. There are some notes of clove, hops, banana, bread and a touch of booze. The taste pretty much follows the nose. There is some bread malts, banana, and caramel in the forefront. There are also flavors of clove, allspice, a bit of citrus, and a bit of alcohol. The finish leaves some lingering sweetness, banana, booze, and spice flavors on the palate. This has a medium body and good carbonation. It goes down smooth and has a nice feel to it. There is some tingly spice and some nice sweetness. There is also a small mild hop presence. I found it to be nicely refreshing. This has good drinkability. I think it is a really nice beer, and different from what I usually see Lagunitas do. I would definitely buy more of this one, and I recommend trying it out.

The typical 22 ounce bottle presentation of a not so typical style brewed in the US. On to the beer:

Looks burnt orange with a hazy body, yet not super hazy as bubbles can be seen racing to the top. Not much of a head on top, nor is the retention much ot talk about. It has a very spicy nose; a lot of clove and spicy/peppery alcohol upfront with a little fennel and wheat in the backseat.

Lots of spice and lots of alcohol. You could close your eyes and pretend you were eating out of the baking spice cabinet. There is some banana wheat bread which attempts to break the spiciness of the beer. This is not something that encourages fast drinking.

It is a reasonable attempt at a helles weizenbock. If the alcohol were hidden better (or lowered), then Lagunitas has another fun drinking beer in their portfolio. Right now the alcohol is over the top.

Poured a 2" very light custard yellow head with average fade. Hazy fleshy yellow body, kind of grapefruit. Smells of malt, spice, cloves, a bit of banana. Taste follows the smells but it's also rather sweet and salty. Fairly rich body and quite a long finish. The higher alcohol is obvious. Pretty good.

Polished off one of these at the Bronx Alehouse after my shift at The Yardhouse last week. Poured into a goblet glass...

A: A quite cloudy/hazy grapefruit color w/finger plus wide lacing head. A much lighter weizenbock as compared to an Aventinus or even Sam Adams Winter lager....the yeast cloud is impressive indeed.

S: Spice & clove at first then hops which does not surprise me w/Lagunitas...why not throw more hops into the recipe...Clear malt & booze undertones but not offensive at all

T: Following nose quite spicy almost in the style of a tripel. The yeast, clove or even banana character are masked by the hop-follow up & then the nose stinging booze infusion.

M: Medium to thick with cloying nature in the back jowls. While light as compared to other styles, the cloudy yeast nature prevails.

O: A great take on the style & a California influence in my humble opinion. Not on the sweet side but more of spice then minor hop bomb & boozy follow-through. James Langstine, the owner of the Bronx Alehouse mentioned this was Lagunitas' first shot & I look fwd to downing the next & thereafter>>>
