Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.85%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Pours a golden orange color with a tight white head that leaves chunks of lacing.

Smells of bright citrus and pine hops.

Tastes of the bright hops on top of a nice malt backbone. Hops lead off with notes of grapefruit, pine, and a bit of pineapple. Malts add in some sugary sweetness with sine white bread notes as well. Seems to lean a bit towards sweet, but that is not a complaint as it blends quite well with the fruit notes from the hops.

Mouthfeel is medium-full with a lush amount of carbonation.

Overall, I find this to be a very good IPA and would easily take this over the normal Lagunitas IPA, which itself is quite good.

Ok. Didn't expect this from this one.

A-Gorgeous light IPA color. Some head. Liquid gold and see through.

S - Citrus, wow very citrusy. Oranges, delicious lemon zest shines through. Back to oranges and sweetness. Very, very fresh. Yum. Less intense than others in the same class. Makes you want to go for a swim in it.

T - Very balanced. Wow, lots more so than I would have thought. No unpleasant aftertaste at all. A great bite up front with very little aftertaste.

O - good stuff. Great stuff. Like her a lot. Going to do a zombie dust side by side soon.

Appearance – Pours a amber color into a tulip with half finger of white head. A very nice looking IPA.

Smell – Lots of tropical fruit notes, floral and pine, and a hoppy bitterness.

Taste – Holy cow. Heavy tropical fruit such as mango and pineapple. A nice hoppy (though not overly bitter) presence. A nice sweet backbone, but not from malts but more so from the citrus qualities.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, quite creamy, prickly carbonation.

Overall – Fantastic. I love a heavily citrus forward IPA and this does not let down. I feel I may go through the whole six pack tonight.

Pours a nice translucent golden color with a thin layer of white head. Short retention leaves pretty heavy lacing around the walls of the glass.

The nose has a great deal of grapefruit zest along with some lemon and other citrus rind. There is a nice balancing sweet malt present that lets me know this could very well be a nicely crafted IPA.

The taste has a citrus blast that's akin to grapefruit, orange, and lemon rind. The strong citrus notes create a bitter effect on the palate that sticks around for quite some time. There is a biscuit-like malt flavor behind the hoppiness that makes this brew very well-rounded and balanced.

The mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with a crisp and dry finish. This brew is just down right outstanding.

Overall, this is probably the best surprise of 2011 for me at least. I could care less if Brown Shugga' is never made again! Just a gorgeous, flavorful, and classy IPA. Love it.

A - Pours a very light, clear goldish color. Almost looks like a light lager it's so clear. Very small head.

S - Big hit of grapefruits and pine in the nose. Decent amount of sweet malt in the background.

T - A little sweet on the start, fades into that citrusy grapefruit, before turning into a good amount of bitter, piney hops. But that wasn't all. It finished with a little kick of tartness--almost lemony at the end. Very impressive.

M - It's smooth while high in carbonation. Alcohol sits back nicely.

Overall - I've been a self-described critic of Lagunitas. This one though, changes my mind. It's a solid IPA and very nice for the Holidays. Flavors present were great. Well done.

Lagunitas sucks for not making Bown Shugga. Kinda wish they wouldn't have replaced it with another IPA, oh well, they usually don't disappoint, let's find out...

Pours a bright and clear gold color with a nice white head, some lacing too.

Aromas are very nice, lots of citrus, notes of mangos, oranges, tangerines, and also some stinky resin.

Taste is slightly sweet up front, some caramel, cream, and crackery. Finish is dry and crisp with some resin and hints of pineapple, mangos, and oranges. There is also some pine bitterness on the finish as well.

Mouthfeel is pretty full, smooth, and with crisp carbonation.

Overall, a very nice IPA, Lagunitas might suck for not producing Brown Shugga this year, but this is yet another fine offering from the folks in Petaluma.

clear rich golden brew puts up a 1 1/2 finger head and laces the glass very nicely - aroma of hops - piney and fruity - grapefruit and bananas - taste is fresh and hoppy with a sweet malt backbone - good body and nicely crisp with a finish that begs for the next sip - real good stuff - not nearly as heavy or sticky as the beer it's subbing for.

12 ounce bottle, $9.99 a 6-pack. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a clear dark gold color with about a half inch off-white head. The small head did stay around a while, and there's a good amount of lacing left on the glass. Aroma is nice and hoppy, it smells mostly like pine and citrusy (grapefruit, tropical fruit) hops, along with a little bit of sweet malt. The taste is pretty much the same as the aroma, it's full of pine and citrusy hops, and some sweet malt is noticeable too. There's a bit of sweetness in this brew, but it's still mostly hoppy and has a lingering bitter finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a little slick and sticky with good carbonation. I think it's a pretty good brew, not a bad way to make up for the lack of Brown Shugga this year!

A-Pours orange with yellow highlights. Light and transparent. Has that signature Lagunitas off-white cap. The head retains and leaves great sheets of lacing.

S-Wreaks of super juicy, fruity hops. Christmas tree pine needles. Oily, resiny, and ripe from the fruity hops. One of the best, if not the best smelling Lagunitas beers I have had.

T- Quite like the nose. Pineapple, citrus rind, grapefruit, and other tropical fruits. Nice dose of pine to add bitterness. Very ripe and very juicy. Super fresh taste. Quite like Little Sumpin Sumpin without the wheat.

M-Medium body. Medium carbonation. Resinous and oily from the hops. Moderate bitterness. A bit dry.

O/D-Definitely enjoyed this more than I would have Brown Shugga. Another great Lagunitas IPA. Love the hop bouquet. Will be buying a few more 6 packs of this. Their special/seasonal 6 packs are regularly great.

Been dyin to try this one! Pours a beautiful, sparkling clear golden color with a medium white head that disappears quickly. Scent is WOW! Awesome citrus and tropical fruit aromas that remind me Port Mongo or Avery Mahajara. Inviting piney forest aromas. Just smells extremely fresh and hoppy. Oh yeah, this beer is good. Damn good. Taste is initially bitter hops with profound hop resin flavor. Then you get a bit of mango and pineapple, which transforms into grapefruit and orange. Lovely pine flavors throughout. Nice and sweet without being overly sweet, that finishes with lovely bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied that finishes crisp...but it's weirdly sticky in a way. Drinkability is very high. Overall, this beer lived up to the hype. Honestly, I would prefer this over Brown Shugga. In fact, probably my favorite IPA/DIPA from Lagunitas.

Picked up a 6er of this for a not cheap, not expensive $9.50ish.

A- Pours a straw gold, rather light color for a seasonal, slight head. Not much lacing.

S-Slight pine up front w/citrusy characters and malt in background, great!

T- mouthfeel is medium, wow lots of stuff going on here. Almost hard to put my finger on one exact thing. The citrusy hops are the first to taste. Bitter aftertaste as well that sticks with ya for awhile after a drink of this beer. Definitely has that amazing Lagunitas taste! And from what I can taste, I detect a slight connection to brown shugga in this beer. (From what I remember brown shugga to be) Pine burps produced too might I add :)

O- Would i recommend this beer to someone else? Absolutely. This stuff is bomb. Its no brown shugga, but I will gladly drink this anyday of the year. If your a Lags fan, this will not dissapoint! The best of an unfortunate situation! (Regarding the no brown shugga this year)

One-finger, bone white head sits atop a clear, golden body. Minimal lacing on the glass.

Tons of tropical fruit sweetness. Evergreen freshness. Biscuit malts and honey.

Tropical fruit flavors, but restrained on the sweetness. Piney and floral. Dry, cracker malts, with some honey. Bitterness is balanced nicely, producing a restrained bitterness on the finish.

The Anti-Brown Shugga, and I'm happy they went this direction. What a great beer. I hope this isn't a one time thing. Bring this back next year!

Bottle dated 312 day of 2011 so this beer was bottled 8 days ago.

So...shocker. We have yet another hoppy beer from Lagunitas whose finish tastes exactly the same as every other hoppy beer they brew. Not really complaining though as Brown Shugga' is one beer I'm very happy to do without this year. Never been a fan of the "Shugga"

A - Very active, clear golden in color and not much head or lacing although I wouldn't say it's totally lacking. Good.

S - Pretty potent here, tropical citrus fruits dominate, Pineapple, Orange and Mango. Some pine, gets better as it warms.

T - A little bit too sweet in the finish for my taste but hops linger very long and sticky on the palate which isn't a bad thing. Taste follows nose pretty well but as it warms you start to get a aging banana flavor intertwined with the citrus which as odd as it sounds...I thought made the beer better.

M - Crisp and clean. Got creamier when warmed. easy drinking IPA wieghing in at a heafty 7.85% ABV.

O - Very similar hop profile as Hop Stoopid, Little Sumpin Sumpin and same somewhat off-putting sweet finish that all Lagunitas hoppy beers have. Not at all a very creative Holiday beer from Lagunitas minus the name and marketing. I did enjoy reading the story at the bottom of the six pack I bought at a great value I might add at $9.99

Nothing mind blowing, but a solid hoppy brew to itch that hop fix for the Holidays at a very reasonable price.
