Notes / Commercial Description:
This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Lagunitas Sucks (Brown Shugga Substitute Ale) 6pk bottles $9.99(OH)

12 oz brown bottle poured into a stemless white wine glass. bottle code is on neck in black, hard to see. 004 4. means it was bottled the fourth day of 2014.

pours a dark golden color and a bit cloudy too. about two fingers of peach white thin head, that don't stay around long giving way to minimal lacing.

it smells like an IPA should, citrus, grapefruit, and a hoppy pine to it.

the taste mirrors the smell. starts out with some citrus, grapefruits, and follows up piney and bitter.

mouth feel is light to medium.

overall i don't understand the big hype behind this brew at all. I don't consider this a double or imperial IPA, over 9% ABV would be a double or imperial. The label is deceiving, if you have never had The old brown shugga then you have no idea this is an IPA. the label just says ALE and looks very cheaply designed and made. A craft beer without a freshness date? i have to decode your hard to read black codes in the store? For 10 bucks a six pack I was very disappointed. label says limited release, yet it is available year around. anyway a decent IPA NOT a double or imperial IPA at all. I will NOT be buying this again.

Golden orange in color with just a centimeter of white head.

Nose has plenty of citrus, pineapple and pine.

The first sip packs a punch. Tons of hops coupled with a tight malt bill. From the description I wasn't expecting these four cereal grains. That explains some of the Silkiness but at the same time this dries out. It really is a fantastic double IPA. The malt bill really showcases the hops. So easy to drink. Lingering pine bitterness

Plenty of carbonation helps the hops standout.

Just a nice solid DIPA. Great value from a great brewery.

I had this previously rated as a 4, and this is right about where I came in on this full review. Previously on draft, this was a 12oz bottle. No date (but this must have been pretty fresh). Poured slightly hazy, light amber into the Spiegelau with 2 fingers of white head. Slightly sweet nose, with big dank, resinous notes in abundance. Some citrus (more to the lemony/limey end of the spectrum) and a hint of grassiness. Thought there MUST be Mosaic, maybe this HBC342 throws off some dank notes? Up front dank hop notes on the palate (bit of the pissy rug) followed by a clean citrus sweetness which came off a bit more towards grapefruit. Crisp and dry finish, little bit of residual sweetness, and a great platform for the hops to play. Again, equally, if not more enjoyable, than the draft version. Gimme more!

In a crowded IPA market, you must find a way to peak your head over the pack. Lagunitas seemed to have found a way by accidentally screwing up their brew schedule and forcing themselves to find an alternative to Brown Shugga. It took me some time, but I put my faith in the community and picked up a six-pack. On to the beer:

Color looks like a light toasted orange, met with a solid job of head retention, and a number of thin rings of lace which wrap around. When I smelled it, I felt that my faith was rewarded. It's tough to deny an aroma that succulent, with pleasurable amounts of tropical fruits, pineapple, melon rind, and passionfruit. Fruit alors!

Similar to the aroma, the taste caps any lingering skepticism that I head towards the beer. It's an attack of the two P's, being passionfruit and pineapple. Not far behind is tangerine in this explosion of hops. There's a milder sweet cantaloupe note too. Although hoppy, it didn't get into any bitterness. This is carried with a medium/full body with the alcohol hidden.

If you have an addiction of hops, then you are probably shouting that Lagunitas sucks with this creation. If you love hops, then you need to find yourself a glass of Lagunitas Sucks!
