From a bottle picked up in Flagstaff a couple weeks back...first brew of the evening. Dark brown with mixed size bubbles. Aroma of dark roasted malts and burnt molasses. Flavor is rich with some bitter and burnt roasted malt notes, molassas, dark bitter chocolate, and alcohol. Not overly sweet and the roasted malts and hops compete in the bitterness category. The initial and after taste is stronger and more bitter than some other black IPAs, such as Tommyknocker's Hop Strike or the Stone 15th Anniversary Escondidian Imperial Black IPA. Decent strong flavored brew with a cool Sasquatch-like label.

A semi-local brew from Flagstaff, AZ. I remember being at Mogollon once and having a Headless Horseman or something. I think it was good but those college days are kind of hazy. Anywho, the nose here is roasted malts, chocolate, some smokey char, some mild citrus (almost a tartness like grapefruit) and notes of piney hops. It has an overall kind of swe
et smell for something so dark and roasty. The taste kind of goes in a different direction. Where sweetness and hoppy notes took over the nose, the taste is dominated by roasted malts and definite charred notes. Its dark, roasted malts that fall into a charred woody flavor and are washed by piney hops that are quickly replaced again by roast and char. Its medium bodied with decent carbonation (about the level you expect from a black IPA). Overall its not bad at all but its hard to stand up against Stone Sublimely Self Righteous & Odell Mountain Standard. A good beer nonetheless and I'm proud its from AZ.

Poured into a Stone Imperial glass. Black in color with dark brown highlights. The head is small one finger and light cocoa brown in color. The lace doesn't seem to want to stick now but I will keep an eye on it.

Smell is great!! Dark roasted coffee, charred wood, semi sweet chocolate. I also get some tart smells of like cherry or fig. All of the smells are pretty dark but I think I am detecting some floral hops here. There is also quite a bit of alcohol in the nose as well. It kind of smells like Stone 15th Anniversary.

Taste is very similar to the nose with some bitter chocolate, some charr and a bit of coffee. There are some tart cherries there too and some alcohol burn as this warms. The flavor profile isn't as big as the nose, or my expectations, had led me to hope for.

Mouth is crisp and on the silky silky side. Carbonation is round and the body is a bit delicate. Finish is average and on the dry side.

Overall I really did enjoy this local brew but don't think the taste or mouth hold up to this ones great nose. Try it if you can get it. On a side note I have added this beer and classified it as an American Black Ale but the bottle says Double Black IPA. BA doesn't have a category for Double Black IPA or Double Black Ale so that was the closest I could do.
