It's a cool idea, a ski lodge in the middle of a beach town, and very much looks, and feels like a lodge. The place was pretty dead when we were in for dinner, but it was Monday night, and July 4 as well. Also I have the feeling since it is in a cluster of about 4 or 5 bars, this might be more of a late night drinking spot, but the family and I were out of there by just after 8.

The draft selection is very good, as others have said probably best on the island. About 30 choices, and not one brewery showed up on the list more than once. Styles were also pretty diverse, and a nice mix of local and national breweries. They have a decent size bottle list as well. I went with a black lager from Palmetto with my meal which was excellent, and a pour of Mexican Cake for dessert!

The food was decent for what it is, just don't expect anything mind blowing. It's pub grub, and supposedly they are known for their burgers and wings, though I didn't try either (my kid did get a cheeseburger and my wife tried it and said it was decent). The food menu is kind of limited, I was expecting maybe a few more sandwiches and such. But what I did settle on was a meat and 3 sides for $11, which turned out to be a pretty good deal; plenty of food, and the beef Brisket I chose for my meat was good.

The service was fine, everyone was friendly and attentive. For as dead as it was, there would be a real problem if the service was lacking.

Overall I'm glad I checked it out. I'm sure there are plenty of much better dining options on the island, but if you looking for a place with a great beer selection (which is one of my criteria when selecting a place to go in an unfamiliar area) and decent grub, this place passes the test imo.

I'm looking forward to going here again on a future trip, but my first visit was great. it's got an old school, locals feel to it, a little dark and ski -logdey. Food is decent, but a lot of fried standard bar food. I had a burger which was delicious and they have a kids menu too. Lots of very quality drafts to choose from and sample options are nice if you're looking for variety. Speaking of variety, a lot of different styles were represented as well from many different breweries. Definately a stand out from a beer selection standpoint on the island.

My favorite place for beer on Hilton Head Island, 30+ craft beers always on tap. Bartenders are very knowledgeable. $1 spaghetti is a great deal. Burgers are also very good.

I had what I’d consider a marginal experience at the Lodge last night; the food was good and the beers were fine and they did have probably 35 drafts from which to choose, but I believe our drinks were shortchanged a bit. While we were there, my wife and I were talking about the different glasses and the fact they typically charged $2 for 5oz samples and $5 for 16oz glasses. When I noticed that some beers were sold by 12oz glasses and others by 16oz glasses, I also looked more closely at what we had gotten and doubted I really received 12oz of the beer I ordered. My wife then looked at her Stella glass and noticed they had filled it to just above the 33cl mark for her 16oz Stella Cidre. When she got out her magic phone and did the conversion to ounces, we realized that 33 cl = 11.16 ounces; not good. My Duval glass was filled just above the 25cl mark which equates to around 8.45 ounces of beer instead of the 12 ounces that should have been there. Pretty shady. Now, each drink we had was filled a little above each line, so we probably got 12 and maybe 9 ounces each, but that still wasn’t what we paid for. I then ordered 2 of their 5oz samples, only to eventually realize that they maxed-out at 4+ ounces. We mentioned the discrepancies to the waitress and she said they’d filled them more than we thought, so we let it go because we didn’t want to start a whole deal about it. However, the lead waitress or bartender did come over and talk with us to see if everything was ok and my last 5oz drink did arrive literally spilling over the top...which meant it was probably the right amount. In the grand scheme of things, we probably paid for 15 more ounces of beer than we got; not grand larceny but not cool.

Place looked interesting. Nice woody atmosphere. Some outside patio seating. Excellent tap list, 36 in total. Far and away the best selection on the island. Full and mini growlers available. A Cigar City offering on tap was the draw for me.

4 oclock opening time even on a Saturday, holiday, bowl game weekend? Fail.
Can't speak to the service from looking through the windows.
Hopefully next time I will be around when they are open.

The best beer spot on the island - great selection and they do growlers too. Last time I was in they had growlers of Mexican Cake for $30. We've been several times and always had a blast. The burgers are said to be good - never tried them. Nice dark spot to sit and enjoy a beer - nothing else on the island comes close to this spot.

Quite simply ... fantastic. If you are in the area, do not miss this place.

We were on HHI for a week (Sept '12) and came here for a couple of looseners every night. The beer selection is huge and the quality superb. Plus the taps rotate so there is always something new.

Both the staff and the regulars were really welcoming. If you wanted advice they were on hand and helpful....if you knew what you wanted then they didn't force it on you.

Great job guys...hope to see you next year

PS; For those who been before but not recently the area the bar and surrounding restaurants has had a lot of work done, so the old scuzzy pond out back has been filled in and the whole area is improved.

This is the BEST bar in Hilton Head Island. We didn't try any food here, but do yourselves a favor and hit up Hilton Head brewing Company (about 15 feet away) and get the sweet potato fries. They will rock your world with awesome.

Unrelated notes: the best seafood places on the island are; The Crazy Crab and The Boathouse. If you're looking for a nice dinner with the family, hit up Crazy Crab. If you're a 20 or 30-something on a date, check out Boathouse. Trust me.

Anyway-- I really liked the Lodge. I love the woodwork everywhere. The bar top being a thick slab of wood is a perfect touch. They have pool and shufflepuck in the back-- for free (just ask the bartender!)! I really feel like this place could belong in a ski-resort mountain town as well as here on the island!

But who cares what the place looks like if the beer is good, amiright?!
The Lodge has the BEST selection on the island. No jokes. No bs. If you're looking to have a tasty beer, head here.

As an added note, they also do growler fills!
The prices were a bit higher than some other places, but other places didn't offer virtually ANY of these selections.
A pint of the Westbrook DIPA was $9... A growler fill would have been $22 + $5 for the glass.
My wife had a $6 pint of Fox Barrel pear cider...

Check out their nightly deals though-- I think Tuesday is $2 pint night?! Hell yeah!

Coming here twice while on vacation in Hilton Head Island, I came back merely because of the selection! Unbelievable!

Part of the "Triangle" Bar scene in HHI, it was a $5 cover both nights I came to enjoy beer on the weekend. The atmosphere was full of college crowds because of it being Memorial Day weekend. Not sure it if it is always like this but entertaining to say the least. Very crowded and took a minute to get a drink.

Both nights, anything on-tap went into a 16oz plastic cup. Didn't offend me since I could carry my beer into all of the other bars including Hilton Head Island Brewing Co and O'Reilley's Irish Pub.

Tough to get a drink but when I did, was able to ask about new beers that I should try and the bartender was quick to help. Ask for the "beer bartender" though... The first one didn't know much about their offerings.

What a selection! They offered over 30 beers that seemed to be "rotating" on-tap. Their can/bottle selection was quite impressive as well.

When coming back to HHI, this will be a future stop without question! Now I would like to see what this place is all about on a "quiet" night!

Been here a few times, mainly for the beer selection. Not the biggest place and the bar only has about 25 seats but the selection is very good. There are about 30 taps and the rotate frequently, complimented by about 50 bottles of craft brew. Everything from local Palmetto Brewing Company to Chimay, Bells, Avery, Great Divide, etc. Even a few bottles of Batch 9,000 and 10,000 available. The prices are very reasonable, I don't think I've ever paid more than $6 for anything on tap. It gets pretty busy and there is a pool table, shuffle board, and a place for a live band to play. Definitely recommend this place for any craft beer enthusiast if they find themselves on Hilton Head Island.

Hit up The Lodge a few times while vacationing in Hilton Head.

Nice selection of craft beers, roughly 20 on-tap and twice as many in bottles. Lots of local beers from newish breweries, too, which I liked. Skull Coast, Coast Brewing, RJ Rockers, etc. The Skull Coast Watermelon Wheat was superb, as was their Maelstrom IPA. They also had Coast Hop Art, some offerings from Bell's and Terrapin, and North Coast Old Rasputin on nitro-tap.

Wait-staff was friendly, a local got into a heated argument with the bartender while I was nearby, but it seemed the bartender was in the right and the patron--a drunken, cursing idiot. Prices are inexpensive, and they have various specials throughout the week. I also appreciate the fact that you can get most of the tap offerings as a $2 5oz. pour, giving visiting beer geeks the chance to try 3-4 beers in a sitting for relatively cheap and still feel safe driving home. Overall, the best place on the island for a selection of pints, save Mellow Mushroom.

I visited The Lodge for the first time a few days ago while on vacation. Despite the few gripes I outline below, the overall experience was good and I would definitely go back if in the area.

While they boast 36 rotating taps, I was disappointed to find some of the taps taken up by Bud Lite, PBR, etc. Pushing those aside, the selection of craft brews was excellent.

My first choice beer of which I wanted to purchase a growler (Avery "Mephistopheles") was denied by the staff. The bartender said they don't sell that one by the growler because they only get a limited supply each year. I settled for a growler of Bell's "Oberon Ale" instead, and was quite pleased. I went back a day or so later, tried a pint of the Mephistopheles, and was glad the bartender didn't send me home with a growler of that. A pint was more than enough.

My first drink at the bar was Grand Teton "Pursuit of Hoppines." For first pour, I got the last of the keg and a big foam burst which resulted in less than a pint of beer. I may have expected too much, but I was again disappointed when they didn't offer even a discount on the beer.

At about 10pm, the atmosphere changed from what you would expect of a lodge, where you can hang out, socialize, and enjoy the brews with decent background music, to more of a club where the volume on the music was so loud it was impossible to carry on a conversation at your same table. I would actually be interested to know if most of that crowd were drinking the craft brews or the Bud, PBR, etc.

Located next to the brewpub in Hilton Head, this is the place to have some good beers. When entering it is a bit rustic and a log cabin atmosphere, and a large bar that can seat about 20 is on the left. A nice stuffed bear drinking out of a glass provides a nice laugh. There are several booths around the bar area and a pool table in the back.

Beer wise this place rocks on the island. Over 30 draft beers with some good stuff to entice someone like me. Two COAST beers, along with some New Belgium (including La Folie), Brooklyn, RJ Rockers, Rogue, Victory, Bear Republic, and several other good brewery offerings.

Beers were fresh and a bit expensive, but service was prompt. Food wise they only serve hamburgers and hot dogs, so we did not have any food.

A nice place to have a beer on Hilton Head. Worthy of a stop.

I have been a patron at The Lodge since 2003. Back then it was a Martini and Cigar Bar, and was still my bar of choice. When the renovations were completed in 2010 and the bar transformed into a craft beer establishment, I was ecstatic! Their selection of beer continues to be amazing. They do not just restock the same breweries each week. The breadth and diversity of product is the best I have seen in the Low Country.

The Lodge ownership does a great job making sure their product does not sit too long, and also that their staff is well versed in their selection of beer. I believe they have done a great job promoting craft beer and broadening Hilton Head Island's beer knowledge!

Thanks to The Lodge for creating a little spot of Heaven on Earth!

Recently on my trip to visit my parents in Hilton Head,we saw that the Lodge had an A plus rating and decided that we had to check it out for ourselves. We arrived in the early afternoon, but since it was off season they were not open yet. Tony, the owner, was there prepareing to open and invited us in. When I walked in i noticed the bar, I was impressed with the thirty-six taps they had available to their customers. He spent time explaining to us the history of his business and how difficult it was to obtain good beers in his area. Later that day, we were anxious to go to the Lodge. Tony wasn't in anymore, but Nicole, the bartender had alot of knowledge about each of the beers, making our selection quick and simple. She texted Tony to tell him that we were back at the Lodge, and he referred to us as "the beer advocate guys from New York". He was also generous enough to buy us a round of beer. I reccomend that people around the Hilton Head area who want to enjoy good beer and have a good time, should take an evening and visit the Lodge for themselves.

The Lodge is heaven on earth for a craft beer enthusiast. Few places (if any) in the southeast or beyond offer the quality or selection of craft beer on draft as the Lodge. Their bottle selection is impressive also.

As a local who enjoys the Lodge on a regular basis, it is evident that Tony (the owner) is passionate about providing high quality craft beer at his establishment. It's one thing to have 36 taps, but to consistently provide such a tremendous variety of great beer takes someone who is serious about the product offered. The list of draft beer is ever changing with several new choices week after week and the selection is world class. With the knowledgeable and friendly staff, and a huge variety of great beer, you will undoubtedly find something to quench your thirst.

Thanks to Tony and his staff for making the Lodge truly exceptional.

Oh, and if you are hungry, try the burger!

I've visited the Lodge on several occasions and have enjoyed the hell out of it every time. The food is great, the cheeseburgers and Chicago-style hotdogs are some of the best around (in fact I have a buddy who, having visited only once, keeps talking about how good the burger was). Tap selection is easily the best in the area, Sculpin seems to perpetually stay on tap here! Not to mention the awesome growler selection and pricing. Staff is friendly and seems to genuinely care about beer. You may occasionally have to deal with a BMC-swilling knucklehead patron but it's understandable given the area. Still, if you are in the Hilton Head area, and a fan of great craft beer, this is one of the 2 stops you have to make (Growlers being the other)!

Not the kind of place I was expecting in the upscale Hilton Head area. Great neighborhood bar feel for a resort town. Nothing fancy or upity about this place (designed to feel like a hunting lodge with a LOT of wood)!

Went to visit the night before the beer festival as the lodge was tapping some new stuff to kick off the festival. What an amazing selection (35 taps maybe?)! Since the selection was a lot of stuff we don't get into Charlotte, I did mostly 3oz samplers.

Met the manager/owner (BA handle HiltonHeadBeer) and talked with him a bit and also met another BA member and his wife at the bar. Great time was had by all. We got there early so no problem getting a seat at the bar but got more crowded as the night went on.

Service was good. Beer was great!

My wife and I visited The Lodge on Friday and Saturday during the Seafood, Jazz and Brews Festival. Our overall impression when we first walked in and throughout both visits, was comfort and quality. We felt immediately at ease even though we were newbies both to The Lodge and to Hilton Head Island. We met Tony, the owner, and he was quick to answer any and all questions I happened to pester him with and really made us feel at home.

The service was quick and attentive, and well versed on the beers that were on tap. And what a selection it was! Everything from Southern Tier's Creme Brulee to Foothills Sexual Chocolate and even Stone's San Diego County Session Ale with a total of 36 excellent choices and the option to taste in 5oz samples, which made both visits quite reasonably priced, especially for the quality and rarity of the beers.

Overall, I would highly recommend The Lodge and the staff's hospitality to anyone visiting the island or even as it's own destination. The Lodge is that good!

The Lodge is the beer connoisseurs best bet in Hilton Head. Every time I am in there they have something new for me to try out (and it is usually awesome). 36 taps mounted on a huge granite slab and a great selection of bottles. Their burgers are some of the tastiest that I have ever had and offer the option of a single, double, or triple. Happy hour food prices are an awesome deal too. Service has always been very good. The staff is well educated so if you ever have any questions about a certain beer they can most likely help you out.
Overall an awesome beer bar that is definitely worth a visit if you haven't tried it out already.

I went here a few weeks ago, while vacationing with some friends. When you walk in you virtually feel like you are in a mountain lodge, which is kind of cool, but at the same time weird because it was very humid and in the low 90s that day. The selection of beer nearly blew my mind. I wish I had more time to spend there and just slowly drink some quality beers, but my friends wanted to go elsewhere. I was only able to drink a Stone IRS 2010 which was served in a room temperature glass and the beer itself was not ice cold, which was nice. Its kind of a small bar, but pretty nice inside as it feels like a place regulars would hang out. I didn't get to eat there, but the burgers looked awesome. If I ever go back to Hilton Head I will definitely return. This place is a beer lovers dream. The service was good and I highly recommend this bar.

This place was my oasis in a desert of bad beer. After bringing down a 12 pack of homebrew I needed to find something different. The plan was to go there for dinner, but The lodge is a 21 and over only and we had kids with us. I started out with a growler of Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat NV Maredsous 8.very tasty and not a bad price.

Got the women to look after the kids and went back the next day. the bartender (Drew) remembered me. I had a hopsecutioner. Later Drew pulled asome bottles out of the fridge and we had a Hopping Frog BORIS.

Tony the owner cam over later a we talked a lot about the beer business. Even got my hands on a Bell's batch 9000.

I would highly reccomend this place. Did not eat there, but the beer was awesome

Finally!! We've been coming to Hilton Head for fourteen years as a family. Usually stock up on all our beer for the week back in Atlanta. Thankfully I checked BA a day before we left just in case the beer scene had changed. WOW was I shocked and surprised. Anyway, didn't even go to the house until we had stopped at the Lodge and had some brews and dinner. Beer selection is second to none. Something for every body. Staff is highly educated with respect to beer. ALL the bar keeps had an in depth knowledge of beers and helped many newbies make a selection. We went there every night we were in HH for a beer or two and a growler fillerup. The only complaint we had was when we made the mistake of ordering dinner for the family. There were only two other tables that had ordered ahead of us, but it took ONE HOUR for us to get our hamburgers!!

There is no better beer bar on the island. A fantastic draft selection (which changes daily, or at least as beers run out) a very respectable bottle list, and a great knowledgeable staff.

36 draft beers with a nice variety of styles. Perhaps IPAs are a bit overrepresented, but I don't mind as I'm an IPA guy. Over several visits, I have enjoyed:

- Bear Republic Racer 5
- Terrapin Hopsecutioner
- Widmer Bros' Deadlift IPA
- North Coast Brother Thelonious
- Ballast Point Sculpin IPA
- Great Divide 16th Anniversary wood-aged

This short list is a fantastic representation of the quality brews available at The Lodge.

Prices are reasonable, in the $4-7 range, with $1 off during happy hour (4-8pm).

The food here is very limited. Burgers (single, double and triple), dogs (variety of toppings), fries, tots and chili. That's it. Still, the food is very cheap, especially during happy hour, and is more than adequate. The burgers are thick and juicy. The fries are crinkle cut. The chili-cheese, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Then again, who's here to eat, anyway?
