Style: American Black Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our black IPA is bursting with crisp, clean bitterness and layers of wonderful American hop character. Pale Ale, Munich and Naked Golden Oats give a toasty malt backbone with a smooth mouthfeel. The dark ominous color comes from the Chocolate Malt and the de-husked highly roasted malt. We want the layers of hops to shine against this roasty malt backdrop. Warrior, Citra, Chinook, Centennial and Amarillo lend bitterness as well as a wonderful cornucopia of aromas and flavors of fresh citrus fruit, pine, fresh cut mint and fresh flowers they offer.

Beer #900 was an excellent choice from Revolution in Chicago - A black IPA called Jukebox Hero. The beer poured a nice dark color with a foamy head that reduces but lasts as a bit more than a film for the remainder of the beer. The smell was nothing special, a bit of malt and hops. The taste was great - nice roasted malt and a IPA bite on the finish that lingered in the back of the throat. The creamy mouthfeel was excellent. Very pleased with this one. Will revisit.

With tunes of new and old singing loudly, its confused sound registers on the palate with unexpected medly as the hops of America's early beer culture mingle with newer versions, and then updating that taste on a toasty and darkened bed. The beer kinda oozes with rock 'n roll.

Jukebox-Hero is both juicy and earthen as tropical, citrus, perfume and char challenges the nose and provokes confusion. None of that's resolved since the eye sees something that's porter-dark with a slight mocha lace. But to taste, all that vibrancy of fruit is suspended while the tongue is greeted with toasty, roasty, caramelized sweetness.

And once the medley of malt lays down its foundation of burnt toast, light char, caramel and chocolate, that sensibly is unseated with something sinister of IPA- grapefruit, pineapple and dried orange peel provide suggestions of acidity to complement sweetness of malt and to balance the toast. Finish flavors are faintly coffee-like with a treacle of cocoa and with a citrus peel rebuttal.

Medium bodied throughout, the ale constantly strives for dryness, but the toasted sweetness persists and resist a complete malt fade. The ale remains supported well though remains hop-forward and creates the struggle that dark IPA promote. Where one sees balance, the other sees conflict- and its that curiosity that makes me think that this beer wins out- save for those garlic-rich steaks or prosciutto wrapped asparagus.

Overall, quite a good take on a black IPA. Pours a dark, burnt caramel color with light head and good lacing. Very well balanced on the tongue, with significant resinous hoppiness, but also a good malt backbone and moderately heavy roast character. The flavors are nicely integrated, while the smell is a bit more one-sided on the hoppy aromatics. Moderately full bodied with ample carbonation.

12oz can, date stamped 12/18/2015
A - huge bubbly, tan head holds excellent retention atop a deep brown colored ale
S - black malt mixed with juicy and piny hops
T - dark malts mix well with the bold hops; roasted barley, chocolate, juicy & piny hops, background roasted coffee and caramel
M - sticky hops coat the palate, medium bodied, bitter pine and roasted barley linger on the dry finish
O - very well put together American Black Ale. Glad I finally got to try it with the new, more affordable canned format. I'll buy this again for sure.
