Very dark appearance with slight tan head. Aroma is a slightly sweet bourbon and caramel. Taste is also a slightly sweet bourbon and caramel with some alcohol aftertaste. This beer would score higher with a year of aging.

Poured from a can obtained yesterday at the release, into the official Deep Wood glassware; I did not try it on draft. Black, thick, and syrupy in appearance, with half a finger of head that dissipates quickly but leaves a cocoa-colored rim of foam around the edge of the liquid. Big fudge, cacao nibs and oak on the nose, with hints of black cherry, plum, vanilla, and almond liqueur--a stunning aroma. The flavor profile is less impressive, as the barrel oak and bourbon comes on quite strong, pushing some of the malts and fruit into the background. That said, DBVSOD still drinks pretty smooth for 17% abv, coming across more like a full-bodied 12%. Very special indeed, and one I will definitely look for again next year.
