Notes: Ryeway to Heaven matured in WhistlePig Boss Hog Armagnac barrels. It’s expertly blended with a small selection of bourbon and rye barrel-aged Ryeway for balance.

12oz can poured into Deep Woods snifter at fridge temp.

Appearance: Black body with Khaki head that slow dissipates down to thin ring around the glass.

Smell: Huge cognac / brandy barrel notes with dry / mature oak notes. "Malty bomb" aromas of brown sugar and a hint of dark fruits; the rye is huge and spicy. Very unique not smelled anything like this before.

Taste: This leads with the barrel notes and rye. The Armagnac flavor is just like it smells a brandy or cognac type spirit that gives some hints of dark fruit and grape notes as well as almond, molasses, and hint of vanilla. A bunch of spicy rye. Malt profile is mostly brown sugar and a hint of dark fruit.

Mouthfeel: On the high end of a medium bodied; yet almost achieving that full bodied status. This is on the lower end of moderate carbonation. This does not feel over carbonated and is in fact adequately / well carbonated. The abv is noted and has a light booze sting perpetuated from the rye spiciness. The beer hits the palate feeling creamy and coats the mouth.

Overall: Incredible beer from Revolution. Probably my favorite canned offering from the Deep Woods Series this year. Very unique and Complex. Boss Ryeway boasts flavors seen from a well crafted barrel aged Old Ale. If I would try to describe this beer, I would say this is a blend of an Old Ale and an Imperial Rye beer then barrel aged to near perfection in a unique barrel. Revolution is trailblazing with this beer! The barrel program is showing alot of diversity with Boss Ryeway and all the draft variants available at Revolution on the release day.

At first it appears muddy to mahogany brown, but after it calms down it becomes clear brick red under the light, with a short tan head that fizzles out quickly.

Milk chocolate wafer and Reisen quickly escalate into an assertive yet unique barrel spice that's both a little peppery and a little like fortified wine. The woodiness increases with time, but so too do hints of orange liqueur, but neither in a bad way. Touches of cinnamon and gingerbread provide welcome accents to this complex experience as it warms.

The tingly, crisp carbonation lifts the densely heavy body that would otherwise be quite viscous, somehow coming to a pretty semi-dry finish, exhaling a substantial heat.

It's quite a sophisticated experience.

Had on tap. This one is defined by its snarl, namely from the armagnac barrels and the heaping of boozy rye, both in smell and taste. Smell was darker, with the rye and wood leading the sweeter brandy flavors, nuts and vanilla, very potent. Taste is sweeter than expected with some citrus, brown sugar, vanilla, and date to go with the hot booze, rye, smoke and thick malt. The feel is the issue for me, booze is too hot, the back end burns with the rye and a weird cloying texture, but the rye spice and smoky malt adds plenty of variance to save it. Enjoyed ryeway to heaven more, this is still good but loses all hope of nuance
