3,200th beer rated on beer advocate.

12oz can poured into stemless Revolution Deep Woods Series glass.

canned on 11/02/2019.

Appearance: dark brown bodied beer with a blackish hue. Pours a tall head that drops down to a full cap of off white yet almost khaki colored head.

Smell: The aroma is barrel forward and sweet. Barrel notes of light char, dry oak tannins, brandy, and rye whiskey. Smell aromas include- maple, tobacco, and vanilla. A very light hint of dark fruits as well.

Taste: Caramel, maple, tobacco, grapes, and prunes all start off the sweet start that this beer proclaims. Finish has moderate spiciness and a light booze bite. Big brandy in the finish with big rye spice that balances the rich brandy notes. As this beer warms up the maple begins to really pop & barrel notes seem to temper the sweetness; its my favorite part of drinking this beer.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with low moderate carbonation. A lingering sweetness, spice, and booze finish make this finish a little stronger than semi- dry. Carbonation has a little prickliness as it goes down, maybe a very minute amount of over carbonation found here.

Overall: This is a really complex sipper that Revolution put together. Its definately in the top 3 circle of best work for 2019 Deep Woods series.

The second really fantastic beer aged in Boss Hog barrels. I think that I give the nod more so to 2018 Boss Ryeway over Boss Jacket for a beer aged in those Boss Hog barrels.

Released December 2019; drank 9/9/20 @ Lyla's.

While I found this to be a bit harsh, booze heat-wise, on draft when it was released, this has already mellowed into a real nice sipper. Leather, stone fruit & caramel with a much more mild Whistle Pig bite. Oak emerged as this warmed.

Hope to have this bad boy again!

Dark prune juice brown to clear wine red edges with a quick to fizzle out tan head. In this dark room with a brightly lit backdrop it looks just like a glass of port.

Ugh, delicious. The Deep Woods slay me again.

Deeply luscious and almost savory caramels and toasted brown sugar pair with leather, toffee biscuit and a black peppery cask that has a numbing warmth and splintery char to it. Brown toast and very assertive notes of whiskey kick up as it warms, without being too hot.

The body is medium-full, round but with a crackly effervescence, coming to a semi-sticky finish, exhaling dates and hints of black licorice.

Complex, and not too far off from VSOJ greatness, there's a lot going on with that barrel!

What a great complex beer. Waves of flavors all nicely balanced. Nice brandy taste with lots of wood, toffee, vanilla, and cocoa. Almost like a burnt caramel taste. Some sweetness that sticks around a while but nicely balance by some spice and a little bite from the booze. Revs barrel program is one of the finest around.

From a crowler into a tulip snifter. Canned 1/24/19, had 2/15/19. This is the on tap only version from a Deep Wood release, prior to the can release 12/2019. I’m a little behind in writing reviews...

Pours a fairly dark amber, somewhat opaque, with a short, quickly dissipating head and some spotty cling. Aromas of brandy, bourbon, raisins, figs, dates, brown sugar, oak, toffee, caramel, white grapes, spices- maybe clove?, light tobacco and char, a little apricot. The flavor is more brandy than the aroma, bourbon, raisins, dates, oak, brown sugar, tobacco, white grapes, caramel, light molasses and figs, some apricot. Has a very different spicy flavor, still think cloves are a part. Very smooth, a great medium to full body, well carbonated.

Found this a little hard to describe overall, but the barrels are simply incredible. Layers of flavors and aromas and the warmer it is, the better it is. A very unique beer, one to treasure.

December 2019 canned release, 14.0% ABV. This releases uses Boss Hog Calvados barrels rather than armagnac, and it shows, with a bright crabapple and brandy note on the nose once I crack the can and start pouring. Full finger of head on a moderately aggressive pour. My impression is that this has a higher proportion of the dry component than the regular SJ from this year, but maybe that's also a contribution from the barrel oak, which is massive. Really enjoyable.
