Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A striking, robust porter full of warmth and chocolate malt. Eugene is a robust porter named after Eugene V. Debs, an American union leader and activist who led the Pullman Railroad strike in 1894. An assortment of Belgian specialty malts form a complex structure of toasted grain and caramel flavors. Dark chocolate malt makes this porter black as night and infuses it with its distinct intense, chocolate essence.

Expected this bug, foamy tan head and dark, translucent body. Lacing not really there.

Nose of dark fruit, vanilla and nuts with just a note of roasty malts.

Taste carries a bit of olive on top of that which the nose already spoke of (fruit, dark; smidgen vanilla, etc.) but there's some small hint of coffee as well. As this warms up, the dark fruit takes on a bit more of a raising thing, maybe fig? Definitely more complexity than originally thought.

Little on the thin side but otherwise pretty clean on finish.

Poured into a Dogfish traditional oversized snifter. Bottom of can says 03/15/2016.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 1/2 inch tan head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Sweet toasty malt aroma with some notes of milk chocolate, pralines and caramel.

T- The sweetness continues with some moderate roastiness to balance. Very smooth with more notes of chocolate plus some honey and dark fruit.

M- Somewhat creamy with medium carbonation and a fullish body.

O- Quite delicious and it hides its strength well.

12 oz can. Dark, slightly cloudy, brown-black. Light tan head. Deep slightly sweet chocolate, touch of spice, earthiness. Slightly bitter, nice round malt sweetness. Medium heavy body, lighter carbonation, some acidity.
