Style: English Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A striking, robust porter full of warmth and chocolate malt. Eugene is a robust porter named after Eugene V. Debs, an American union leader and activist who led the Pullman Railroad strike in 1894. An assortment of Belgian specialty malts form a complex structure of toasted grain and caramel flavors. Dark chocolate malt makes this porter black as night and infuses it with its distinct intense, chocolate essence.

High quality, great brewer, just a bit thin on the nose and the feel.
a) Nice color under a tan head that spot laces and holds your attention.
s) too light aromas of coffee, chocolate, toast, with English/euro biscuit malt and touch of hops.
t) Brings forth the smell in rich fresh brewed fashion teetering on coffee and dark chocolate. Some toffee, caramel, butterscotch, walnut, and dark toast. Robust.
f) More hop resins than most porters deliver a fine finish.
o) Satisfying hop bite adds to the English/euro porter experience. Great night cap.

My go to every day beer. Solid porter.

Can dated 11-6-17. CBF Tulip pint.

A: pours an extremely dark brown/black, with a good bit of light penetrating the edges. One finger tan head quickly recedes. Loads of visible carb. No lacing to speak of.

S: fresh out of the fridge some pleasant roasted malt notes; quite sweet on the nose even cold. Chocolatey. Let this one warm up. Chocolate, roasted malt, wine-like character and perhaps a little butterscotch.

T: pretty sweet, light roasted malty sweetness. Light molasses. Some lingering bitterness from the roast. I hate to describe it by reference to another beer, but it tastes like you too GL Blackout Stout and added water - which is not necessarily a bad thing. Kind of reminds me of Turbodog, too.

M: here it sets itself apart - thick and robust, for sure. Full bodied with fairly high carbonation. Some slickness.

O: a really nice, drinkable, if a bit sweet porter. It does not have the intense bitter roast or hop note I am accustomed to in American robust porters, and it is sweeter, fuller-bodied, and less "sour" than the English porters I've had. Would definitely buy a sixer for wintertime, and really perfectly to style, but not a really "memorable" beer.

Definitely smooth and chocolatey. Pours dark and tan head. Smell is a bit roasty but simple. Tastes of chocolate and roasted coffee beans.

Mouth is viscous.

Good porter. Nothing amazing but I could put these down all night.

The look, aroma and taste suggests, hints at and delivers, in that order, chocolately, smooth malts. Robust, indeed, malty goodness. Toasty, with dark chocolate and espresso and the right amount of hops to balance everything out.

I don't care for the can or the name.
