Style: English Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A striking, robust porter full of warmth and chocolate malt. Eugene is a robust porter named after Eugene V. Debs, an American union leader and activist who led the Pullman Railroad strike in 1894. An assortment of Belgian specialty malts form a complex structure of toasted grain and caramel flavors. Dark chocolate malt makes this porter black as night and infuses it with its distinct intense, chocolate essence.

6.8% ABV, 28 IBU. Bought at a mixed 6'er at Binny in Chicago. No ingredients per the website. Pours out to a clear, dark brown, near black, forming a modest dark tan head with average retention and lacing. The can was a bit of a gusher, so I am a bit worried. Yep, there is some wierd infection going on here. Sourmilk, pennies, and kiwi fruit...I think lactobacillus. The taste is a little peculiar but not overtly infected, but would certainly taste pretty bad a few months from now. The mouthfeel is still smooth and soft with a medium dense body. Taste has some soft cocoa notes and a little earthy tobacco in the finish with a medium bitterness, but then the taint of kiwi fruit, soap, and an odd metallic bitterness that I get with infections. The taste is enough though that it has promise and is probably quite a nice beer when fresh.

Look: Pours black with a tiny bit of dark brown around the edges when in light. A finger of creamy tan had covers the top of the brew and slowly dissipates to a nice thin layer for the rest of the session.

Smell: Tons of roasted malts. Possibly a bit of dark fruit and vanilla in the background as well. Smells delicious.

Taste: Loads of chocolate and roasted malt dominate the flavor. Dark fruit flavors, vanilla, and lactose also sits in the background. Very very tasty.

Feel: Creamy but not too heavy. Medium carbonation Really good balance.

Overall: This is one of my favorite beers, and one of the best porters in my opinion. The aroma and flavors are delicious and balanced, and I never get sick of drinking it!

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A rich and roasty dark malt driven aroma with a scent of dark chocolate, caramel, and biscuit. Dark roasted barley malt with a scent of dark chocolate, coffee, caramel, biscuit, toast, nuts, smoke, and yeast. Sweet scent of brown sugar. Subtle hints of leather, anise, and earthy hops. A very nice roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a rich and roasty dark malt driven taste with notes of chocolate, caramel, and biscuit. Dark roasted barley malt with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, caramel, toast, biscuit, nuts, and smoke along with some yeast. Sweet notes of brown sugar. Undertones of leather, tobacco, and anise. Light earthy hop bitterness. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, creamy, and silky with a drying finish.

Overall: A really great American Porter. Big roasty dark chocolate flavor with a moderate smooth body.

Eugene pours a dark black color with hot tamale red colored sides when held to the light. The tall head is khaki beige and leaves skirted lace around the glass where it once was.

Aromas of cola, roasted barley, chocolate malts, and a proper pinch of hop. The cola kind of wussifies the aroma, but we'll see what the flavor brings.

Flavors of licorice, dark chocolate, hazelnut, lactose, and roasted barley. The roasted barley fades out on the profile with a touch of milk chocolate. It's quite delicious.

Feel is right on track for what a porter should be - it's got some interesting attributes though. The front is watery, but then it thickens up as it crosses the palate and develops a firm medium body pushing even into heavy territory towards the finish. A semi-dry, roasted parch wraps things up.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. Eugene is a killer porter, and while I nabbed 3 of them in Chicago, I wish I would've grabbed more. Probably in my top 5 porters now. Great work.
