A 12oz. can filled 01-05-2018 poured in a Revolution snifter.

Look- Pours a light brown-ruby red color leaving a small ring of tan foam behind. An oily residue can be seen clinging to the glass.

Smell- Prominent bourbon, toffee, caramel, vanilla and mild char.

Taste- Bourbon, dark cherry, vanilla, toffee and oak. A hint of roasted corn in the finish.

Feel- Oily slick with a pleasant alcohol heat.

Overall- This has always been a solid barrel aged barleywine and this year's batch has taken it up a notch in my opinion. It's loaded with complex layers of flavor and a pure joy to sip. The 12oz. canned format makes perfect sense for the win. One of the best for the style.

Canned 1/5/18; drank 1/28/18 @ the Yarchives.

Opaque brown/orange rust appearance.

A violent pour yielded a HUGE tan head (careful pouring); strong lace.

Caramel, orange zest, oak, brown sugar & faint bourbon notes in the nose.

Thick, sticky mouthfeel.

Burnt caramel, oak & mild chocolate flavors up front; brown sugar & mild booze heat notes on the finish.

Complex, robust, flavorful but (dangerously) quaff-able; the 2018 version is a stunner. English barleywine bliss.

Exactly one year old today! Pours a clear, deep, dark red with a thin, creamy head. A wonderful bourbon and malt smell with some dark fruits epically cherries. Taste follows the nose. Cherries and vanilla with big molasses, Carmel and malt. Some bitter hop. Medium mouthfeel. This is a special one!

Had this on 2017-05-17 and again on 2017-12-15 (2016 vintage) from a 22oz bottle.

A - Mostly opaque ruby-brown with a very short tan head and very light lace.

S - Caramel, earthy spice, toasted brown bread, dried cherries, cinnamon, dried figs, mild vanilla

T - Punchier flavors than expected from the aroma. Black cherry, molasses, coconut, fig, dried plum, toasted bread, apple butter, vanilla, and there's a lot more barrel flavor than the aroma but this isn't a Bourbon barrel bomb at all. Not particularly bitter and not overly sweet.

M - Medium-heavy body and light carbonation. Smooth and moderately syrupy.

O - This is a really well done, English Barleywine. Let it warm up to enhance the flavors. Well done.

Note: the first time I had this beer, I simply gave it a 4.25 overall rating. With this more careful 2017 tasting, I increased the rating a little bit to 4.30

Gem-esque copper-red with a thin, creamy tan ring and a thin film that looks like wood grains.

Wow, what an exceptionally smooth and velvety thick body--it isn't heavy, but just right. I'm getting a balanced mix of wood, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, soft pine, roasted nuts, pruney fig, and sweet crisped biscuit, with a gut warming swallow that instantly hits your consciousness, mellowing you out with alarming swiftness.

Perfectly straddling the middle ground between sweet and bitter, I can see why this Barleywine is so revered.

32oz growler filled at Heinen's in University Hts., Ohio

Growler poured into a tulip. Pours a deep auburn with ruby hues and has nice clarity; creamy light khaki head that falls leaving very nice retention and lacing. The aromas have lots of coconut and caramel. Hints of cherry and toffee. The bourbon blends perfectly with everything. The flavors follow the nose perfectly. It's definitely on the sweeter side, but it works. More coconut and caramel leading the way. More toffee and cherries along with some vanilla. The bourbon blends perfectly with everything once again. It's pretty sticky. It finishes spicy as well. The alcohol is extremely well hidden. It's dangerously drinkable. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and slick with moderate carbonation, but it doesn't feel heavy at all. It's very smooth. Once again, it's dangerously drinkable.

This is a great barrel-aged brew. Balance is the key with this one. The craftsmanship is impressive.

Poured from a growler into a snifter
A: Dark brown with a very thin head
S: Prune, molasses, brown sugar, bourbon, a touch of vanilla
T: Matches the nose. Complex and delicious
M: Full-bodied, balanced, no heat
O: A beautiful barleywine. The barrel aging isn't obvious but it wouldn't be as complex if it wasn't. Absolutely delicious, creeps up on you fast as it's far too easy to drink
