Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our German-style hefeweizen is as traditional as it gets. The real star of the show is the Weihenstephan yeast strain we used to contribute aromas and flavors of banana, clove and lemon zest which hangs in suspension to give this ale its hazy appearance. The combination of all these wonderful ingredients yields a supremely thirst quenching beer that is both silky smooth and effervescent. Don't even think about using a lemon.

Appearance: Outstanding white foam with a pretty orange color. Not a whole lot of carbonation.

Smell: Heavy on the bubblegum and citrus.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Some bubblegum and a hint of banana. No clove present. There is a lot of orange juice in this and it is way too acidic, as it kills all the yeastiness you want to have in this. The acidity kills the mouthfeel overall, although it is pretty decent at first.

Overall: Glorified Blue Moon.

On tap at the brewery’s tap:

The beer appeared a really nice hazy, golden color with nice white head that was well retained. It gave off a nice yeasty aroma and the taste followed, although I expected bigger things, because of the yeast strain that they were using. Perhaps that is my own fault, as that is a lot to live up to. The beer had a really nice feel to it and proper carbonation. Overall, it was good, again, I probably expected too much.

Much creamier feel, more banana esters, great lacing. Easy drinking, more enjoyable than I remember the last time.

2014: 3.79
Draft at the brewery, quick review from notes. Thanks to Thomas for this one!

Cloudy opaque golden orange color, thin compact layer of foam on the surface that leaves behind a collar of lacing as the glass is sipped. Broken skim on the surface eventually.

Aroma is light, some yeasty clove and wheaty grainy notes.

Taste has lightly spicy clove elements from the yeast, and a smooth mouthfeel from the wheat and a sort of easygoing simplicity about it. Body could be a little more full and creamier, but it's easily drinkable. Just a bare bones classic Hefe, and there's nothing wrong with that.

On-tap at Revolution. Only ordered a taster of this one.

A - Well, it looks like a Hefeweizen. Quick-dissolving white foam settles to wispy patches of bubbles on top, a thick collar, and spotty lacing. Hazy white peach flesh body.

S - Unfortunately it does not smell like Hefeweizen, or at least not like the ones I like. There's an off-putting sweat and sulfur aroma mingling with phenolic yeast, and some standard hefe flavors well in the background.

T - Taste is thankfully better, without as much of the off flavors. That being said, it's somewhat dull, with grain, wheat, weizen yeast, and a hint of lemon. Minimal banana or clove present here, and an unpleasant sour mash sort of finish.

M - Dry, grainy, with zesty carbonation. Medium body, and a thankfully clean finish.

D - One of Revolution's rare misses. Either something went awry during the brewing or this recipe needs to be tossed out. With so many superior offerings at Revolution, I can't really recommend this one at all.
