Our Belgin-style Tripel is back, having spent some time aging in red wine barrels absorbing rich colors and pleasing tannins, all while retaining its fruity esters and warming alcohol finish.

Reviewing the Marquis from Revolution Brewing Company out of Chicago the afternoon before Dark Lord Day. Revolution has a fantastical barrel aging program, and even though I did not like the base beer I decided to give this one a whirl. As with Gravedigger Billy, I was rewarded for my curiosity.
Score: 91

10 oz tap our served in a tulip and enjoyed at the Revolution brewpub on 04/27/12. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Translucent auburn orange color. Served with thin layer of off-white head. Good lacing and retention. 4/5

Smell: Cherry, raspberry, grassy black currant and red grape. The Cabernet barrel aging is very apparent, very well incorporated. Pear, fruity/floral malt and a light amount of alcohol. Some sweet fruit and a little brown sugar too. 4.25/5

Taste: Very complex fruit sweetness. Fruity red wine, cherry and currant. Plenty of acidic red wine sweetness, though it is more apparent in back half than upfront. Pear, cherry and melon juiciness. A little brown sugar/molasses on the midpalate. Lingering red grape finish that grows as it layers. A little sugary sweet, but not overly sweet. Dry Cabernet finish with more brown sugar at room temp. Booziness almost entirely hidden. 4/5

Mouthfeel: Light-medium bodied, medium carbonation. Very smooth mouthfeel; almost like an oily and thin syrup. Sweet and dry finish. 4/5

Overall: The base beer was not very good, but once again Revolution proves a good barrel program can do wonders to even the most mediocre beer. I would not call this one of my favorite barrel aged beers by Revolution, and I feel it was a bit overpriced at $10 for a 10 oz pour, but I welcome the experimentation and will continue to try their barrel aged beers if they keep churning out brews up to the quality of Gravedigger Billy once in a while. I cannot wait for the Revolution Brewing groundbreaking party for their new canning facility -- where I finally intend to drink/review Baracus and BA Baracus.

Recommendation: Give the beer a whirl if you are at Revolution if you like drier/sweeter beers or red wine.

Pairings: The antihero chicken sandwich.

Cost: $10 for a 10 oz pour.

Poured from tap at revolution into a tulip. Pours a dark brown color with a decent head.

Very interesting and balanced aromas of caramel, tart dark cherries, brown sugar, some toffee and slight bourbon aromas.

Full bodied with a good feel, but lacking a slight bit. Very good flavored of brown sugar, toffee and some caramel as well.

This holds the bourbon very well. It doesn't dominate and it holds the alcohol well too. A very enjoyable quad with good complex aromas and flavors.

Served on tap at Revolution. Appearance is hazy red with 1 finger of white head. Heavy lacing left behind. The nose I loade with red grapes, red wine notes, oak, and tannins. Belgian yeast sits in the background along with some subtle notes of clove. The taste starts very fruity with grapes and cherries. This gives way to a nice wine dryness. Waves of oak and vanilla are present on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium with high carbonation. Overall, this is very well balance. The red wine plays into the tripel base very nicely. Another great barrel aged beer from Revolution!!

A: Served in a small tulip. Beer itself is dark brownish red in color and is comes with just a thin white head that quickly reduces down to just a ring around the edge. Minimal lacing.

S: This is a fairly aromatic beer that gives off a strong scent of red wine with notes of grape juice, a light sweetness, a little vanilla and a bit of red wine vinegar.

T: Taste is similar to the aroma, but less tart, less winey, and with more "beer-like" qualities, most notably sweet caramel malts. Also notes of coffee, grape juice, vanilla, oak. The red wine comes through as well, but is much less assertive than in the nose and it presents itself as a slight fruit tartness.

M: Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Tannic bitterness on the finish.

O: I really ended up liking this take on a Tripel. The red wine barrels worked quite well and added a very nice, complementary depth of character to this beer. Easily drinkable and paired well with the charcuterie and cheese plates.

Served in a 5oz glass at Revolution 4/19/12. Thanks to Electric Hawk for providing the rock at Township later in the evening!

A: Served a slightly hazy golden color. A thin white wafer of foam on top that left a suprising amount of lace in the glass.

S: Light oaky notes add a nice complexity to the fruity Belgian yeast and red wine aromas. Best part of this beer!

T: Similar to the smell but it looses some of its' vinous characteristics. The warmer it gets, the more of a standard tripel it becomes.

M: Slick with a creeping dryness, no doubt due to the ABV and BAing. Lively on the tongue.

O: Pretty impressive. When I read the description in the menu I wasn't expecting something so approachable. Great job, guys!

On-tap at Revolution. Served in a 5oz taster glass.

A - Filled to the brim - they tiny white foam settles to a thick collar, wisps, and plenty of glass-coating lace as the beer is consumed. Lightly hazed golden body with some lazy bubbles present.

S - Plenty of jammy red wine notes that mingle nicely with the stone fruits and estery Belgian yeast. There's even a hint of chocolate in the vinous character, and some light oak presence.

T - The taste is more tripel and less vinous at first, but the finish and aftertaste is all jammy Cabernet. Nice stone fruits, yeasty and estery flavors, a touch of sugar. Not much in the way of the promised 'warming alcohol finish', although I'm kind of happy about that.

M - Surprisingly zesty carbonation - seems like Rev's draft system was dialed up a bit. Chewy and bready medium-full body. A bit of dry oak and tannic dryness. No much in the way of alcohol.

D - This was surprisingly good. Based on the description I wasn't entirely convinced this would work, but this turned out pretty nicely. I had no problem finishing my taster and could have had a full tulip. I liked this significantly better than the base beer.
