2014 bottle.

Absolute gusher upon opening. Didn't look good.

The smell was old coffee, vanilla, and dishsoap.

The taste was sour figs (I know), and a mouthful of pennies.

Feel was actually ok, just a little bit overshadowed by the horror my taste buds were experiencing.

Obviously I got a bad bottle, so I will revisit a newer bottle and adjust accordingly.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Pours almost black. A little transparent. Small khaki head and a nice collar.

Smell - Fruity more than anything else. Not a lot of barrel. Some oak. Chocolate.

Taste - Big fruity flavor. Chocolate. Faint barrel. Some liquor flavors. Oaky for sure, but not a ton of barrel.

Mouthfeel - Thin body. I know it's a porter but I want more.

Overall - Kinda disappointing. I like the fruitiness, but the rest is blah.

2013 vintage.

Dark brownish red with a fairly impressive tan head--an impressive amount of thick carbonation for this three year old brew.

Bourbon and sweet heat exclusively on the nose.

Flavors of sweet, smooth cola, chocolate syrup, and bourbon.

A sticky, moderately frothy body.

Bottle from Masterski. Cheers!

From a bomber into a snifter

APPEARANCE: A clear brown pour yields a one finger, loose and fizzy, dark tan head with lousy retention. Head fizzes and crackles down to a splotchy wisp and ring. A clear bistre brown body with hints of carbonation. A ring remains but leaves no lacing down the glass. Ugly head, and rather annoying to listen to.

SMELL: Mild aromas, but quite nice and well balanced. Bourbon, oak, sweet vanilla, hints of coconut and some milk chocolate. Lightly roasted too. A little mild, but well integrated and smooth.

TASTE: Mild bourbon flavors with oak, vanilla and milk chocolate up front. The flavor comes out much more after the swallow with a bold and lingering finish of bourbon barrel, oak, sweet cream, coconut, some milk chocolate, bitter dark chocolate and some roasted grain. A hint of sweet caramel in there as well. A nice, smooth chocolate-bourbon finish lingers and lingers. This is plenty flavorful; too bad the feel hurts it.

PALATE: Thin body and high levels of carbonation. Airy and not smooth at all, goes down a little prickly and finishes sticky. Too light and carbonated for the style.

OVERALL: Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. The aromas were interesting and the flavor very enjoyable, but the looks was lousy and the feel ruined this beer's potential. Fill out the palate and you'd have a real winner on your hands here. I would love to try another batch of this stuff, but this one just misses the mark. Thanks again Masterski.

Looks great - super dark with a nice tan head. A lot of bourbon in the scent and the taste. Hints of chocolate and root beer. But the bourbon is most prominent and the great flavors in the base beer don't come through. Mouthfeel, which in the Eugene Porter is smooth and creamy, is thin. Not a bad beer but not one to splurge on.

A: Very dark brown, almost black with a minimal beige head.

S: Lots of lightly roasted coffee beans and bitter dark chocolate. There is a bourbon character, though not very dominant - hazelnut/vanilla and wood, some heat.

T: Follows the nose but messier. Coffee and chocolate hit first, then a wave of barrel notes.

P: Very carbonated and light/medium body. I know it's a porter, but wish it were bigger and creamier

O: Probably much better on tap - Bean was a mess from the bottle and delicious on tap.
