On tap at the Kedzie brewery; review from written notes.

Black body with dark brownish edges. Dark tan collar of foam with very little lacing to speak of. Still glassy surface. Some clarity visible around the edges.

Fruity plum and brown sugar, coconut, soft whiskey in the aroma.

Bourbon figures large in the taste, the whiskey barrel dominates the base porter, a slight plum note is there, but it's mainly whiskey barrel from start to finish. Medium bodied and dry, a little thin. Overall not bad but not a favorite. May mellow out after some aging but not going to bother with it personally.

Appearance: No bubble show, but the mocha colored head builds upward and then fades back; the ebony colored liquid lets no light through

Smell: Bourbon, vanilla, oak and chocolate; a hint of dark fruit

Taste: Surprisingly fruity, up front, almost like a Baltic Porter, with some raisin and prune; it doesn't take long for the Bourbon and vanilla to arrive, bringing a touch of coconut; roasty and slightly oaky, after the swallow, with some alcohol warmth in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation;' some warmth in the gullet, but the beer is a bit thin for the style

Overall: Having really enjoyed Eugene on draft on a previous trip to Chicago, I was expecting to be really impressed by this beer; to my palate, however, the barrel treatment hasn't done as well as I would have hoped and the flavors don't harmonize as I would have liked

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Pours almost black. A little transparent. Small khaki head and a nice collar.

Smell - Fruity more than anything else. Not a lot of barrel. Some oak. Chocolate.

Taste - Big fruity flavor. Chocolate. Faint barrel. Some liquor flavors. Oaky for sure, but not a ton of barrel.

Mouthfeel - Thin body. I know it's a porter but I want more.

Overall - Kinda disappointing. I like the fruitiness, but the rest is blah.

Bottled dated February 27th, 2013 from the brewery. Served in a snifter.

A - Tan foam quickly settles to a collar, wisps, and minimal lace. Very dark brown body with some transparent reddish at the edges.

S - Roasty, oak, whiskey, dark chocolate, coffee with cream, surprisingly boozy for two-plus years of age.

T - Dark chocolate, biscuit, vanilla, oak, coffee, a bit of dark fruit.

M - Zesty carbonation. A bit thin. Very oaky with some warming. Just kind of watery.

D - Held up well and hasn't mellowed all that much. Tastes good but the feel is very weak.
