Notes:
Bean Gene is the first variation we did with our Mean Gene barrel-aged Eugene Porter.
After months socked away in bourbon barrels, we steeped it with Dark Matter coffee beans prior to bottling. Smooth and well-balanced, with hints of vanilla and an in-your-face coffee flavor, enjoy it at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Pours thick viscous black in color with a thin tan head that retains nicely. Smell has rich decadent aromas of coffee chocolate vanilla. a light roasted aroma overlays hints of bourbon, oak, and more vanilla. Taste follows nose with a large amount of rich chocolate malt and coffee first to hit the palate before loads of sweet vanilla, roasted malt bitterness, bourbon, fig, oak and more vanilla tannins in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium to thick in body with mild small bubble velvety carbonation and a nice balance eternal sticky sweet and bitter charred malt. Nicely balanced beer.

Deep, black color with a firm finger of head in the snifter.
Both sweet and hot smells of bourbon and oak, and some peppery coffee notes behind that. Smells like Jim Beam actually.
Rush of coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, oak, bourbon, chocolate, and alcohol. Man, it's good. I can't emphasize enough how good this beer tastes.
Feel is creamy, thick, smooth, yet still properly carbonated. Dry, boozy finish.
So I wasn't expecting the awesomeness contained in this bottle. Eugene is a solid porter, I guess I figured I'd be tasting some vanilla-coffee infused Eugene. What I got was an incredible beer completely set apart from Eugene. This should easily be world-class. Wow.

Reviewing the Bean Gene from Revolution Brewing Company out of Chicago, Illinois. This is the barrel aged version of their Eugene porter with coffee beans added.
Score: 91
February 2013 vintage bottle served in a Perennial snifter-tulip hybrid glass and enjoyed on 05/23/13.
Appearance: Pours an inky black color with a finger of tan head that settles to a ring around the glass and foggy cap. Very good lacing, amazing lacing. 5/5
Smell: Oaky vanilla, coffee grounds, brown sugar and bourbon. A light amount of raisins and plums, some licorice and chocolate notes too. 4.25/5
Taste: The coffee is the first and last flavor I get, which is a little surprisingly given how much more subtle the coffee was when I had this on tap at the release. Oaky vanilla throughout as well. Bourbon flavor without the bite and cocoa too. The bourbon flavor grows and takes over as the beer warms up. Honestly, it tastes just like it smells. A little roast present too. The brew gets sweeter as the bourbon flavors (brown sugar, caramel, sweet vanilla and licorice) take over -- and causes me to downgrade the rating slightly due to the decreased complexity and drinkability. 4/5
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, low carbonation. More viscosity would be nice, but this is a porter base that has spent time in barrels and the level of viscocity is not bad. Slick, slightly creamy mouthfeel with a light dryness to the finish. Sweet. 4/5
Overall: One of Rev Brew's better, but not their best, barrel aged projects. I think with a little recipe fine tuning, there is room for a lot of growth with this beer. The coffee element could use some tweaking to enhance the roastiness and counterbalancing bitterness elements, a la Coffee Eugene. Frankly, the barrel treatment eliminates a lot of the base beer's qualities, and the bourbon character is what really shines here outside the coffee flavor. I am not the world's biggest fan of the base, but Eugene is a solid porter. Can't wait to try the next batch!
Cost: $18.99 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.

On tap at Revolution. Ordered alongside Mean Gene in 5oz glasses today, 12/18/2013.
Pours a relatively placid black body, minimal head. Looks very flat compared to Mean Gene sitting next to it. Not a lot of retention or lacing. Just about what I'd expect from black coffee, really.
Smells like black espresso. So rich. Complemented by dark chocolate and a bit of barrel vanilla. Very nicely done.
Flavor is black coffee flavors without the bitterness that is complemented by milk chocolate sweetness, bourbon, and barrel vanilla. Nice profile, not quite BCBCS but very enjoyable version of Eugene.
Medium to thinner body, good smooth flavor that just begs to be drank. Enjoyable, but a bit thin. As expected given the base porter.
I dug the coffee in this one, rich coffee and chocolate flavor. A bit thin but recommended.
