Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bean Gene is the first variation we did with our Mean Gene barrel-aged Eugene Porter.

After months socked away in bourbon barrels, we steeped it with Dark Matter coffee beans prior to bottling. Smooth and well-balanced, with hints of vanilla and an in-your-face coffee flavor, enjoy it at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Deep, black color with a firm finger of head in the snifter.

Both sweet and hot smells of bourbon and oak, and some peppery coffee notes behind that. Smells like Jim Beam actually.

Rush of coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, oak, bourbon, chocolate, and alcohol. Man, it's good. I can't emphasize enough how good this beer tastes.

Feel is creamy, thick, smooth, yet still properly carbonated. Dry, boozy finish.

So I wasn't expecting the awesomeness contained in this bottle. Eugene is a solid porter, I guess I figured I'd be tasting some vanilla-coffee infused Eugene. What I got was an incredible beer completely set apart from Eugene. This should easily be world-class. Wow.

Served on tap at brewery. Pours a thick oily black with a collar of tan head. The nose is delightful. Deep roasty coffee paired with smooth vanilla and oak. Nose is reminiscent of kbs. Plenty of chocolate and roast. Things smell very well balanced. Taste is more of the same. Starts with bold in your face coffee, mellows out with smooth creamy vanilla and a bit of charred oak. The balance is terrific, no lingering boozieness from the barrel. Mouthfeel is big and smooth with mellow carbonation. Overall, this is a fantastic beer and should be sought out by anyone that likes barrel aged stouts.

On-tap at Revolution's production facility. Served in a snifter.

A - Brown foam settles to a thin cap, thicker collar, and splotchy lace. Near-black body that's appropriate for a porter.

S - Massive aroma that has equal parts coffee, vanilla, and coconut, with notes of milk chocolate, butterscotch, bourbon. Even though the bourbon barrel presence is very up front, there's never a suggestion of significant alcohol. One of those beers you could happily smell all day.

T - The taste isn't quite on the same level, but it's a pretty nice mix of coffee, vanilla, coconut, dark chocolate, and moderately roasted malts. There's some bitterness from the coffee and the char in the finish, but nothing off-putting.

M - Gritty and tannic, medium body, pleasant carbonation, chewy texture, and a dry finish. No perceptible alcohol warmth. Fine for the ABV, but doesn't totally support the intensity of flavor.

D - Great beer. I drank two snifters happily, and would very much like to see this return often at Revolution. Really outshined Very Mad Cow, which wasn't as nice as the first batch.

This was a very solid offering from Rev. The beer poured an opaque black with tan head that left some lacing. The scent and taste had coffee as a base. There was some bourbon flare in the taste which blended nicely with the coffee almost giving it chocolate niceness. The mouthfeel was fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall.....very good.

Horrendously expensive pours were available at the Emporium Arcade in Chicago. At first, I was like "no way, Joe-say," but then after 5 Yum Yums 12 bucks for 10 ounces somehow began to sound reasonable.

It was goddamn tasty.

Smells of big coffee, sweet chocolate, and just a little wisp of booze burn.

Tastes like it smells, like a glass of Autocrat chocolate milk with a tiny splash of bourbon in it. Starts off with roasted barely, moving quickly into coffee and dark chocolate along with some nodes of vanilla and coconut, ending with a touch of booze.

Very good. Significantly better than BCBS Coffee.

Appearance: Even at the pout this beer comes out super dark. There is little to no head even with added seperation from the bottle to the glass. This is typical for barrel aged stouts, but I would like to see one with some foam to speak of.

Smell: The coffee and the bourbon tie together very well. I can't really distinguish any of the bourbon subilties (mostly becuase I don;t know much about bourbon). Anyway, the aroma was very fine and very strong.

Taste: Initally the bourbon seems to overpower the flavor, but after more and more sips I could get the other flavors coming through. I noticed a tingling of coffee throughout the taste-start to finish. Also, the sweet malts added a good fullness to the beer. I feel like Revolution wasn't going for super-complexity they just wanted sweet, bourbon, with a bit a coffee: and they got it. No bittering flavors to mention.

Mouthfeel: Smoothness was fantastic. I havn't had a smoother non-oatmeal stout. The alcohol added a nice warming finsih that was really enjoyable.

Overall: Definitely worth the time and effort to find it. I wish it wasn;t limited release, but we can also hope for another batch to be brewed. I am not even a coffee drinker and I loved it.

Out of a bottle into my tulip. In trade from Kevinpitts! Thanks much!
A – Deep and dark on the pour. Half inch tan head that settles down and leaves a touch of lacing.
S – Nice bourbon aroma with a good bit of vanilla as well.
T – Light coffee flavor with a good bit of bourbon at first. The vanilla comes in and cuts some of the edge off the bourbon. Traces of chocolate with a touch of oak and some roasted malts.
M – Medium carbonation with a medium body. Creamy and slick on the palate. Leaves just a touch of sweetness and some breathy alcohol.
O – Great. This was a fantastic porter. The tastes are all very well balanced and flavorful. Even better as it warms up the flavors really blossom. Nice.

Really excited to have found this on tap. Pours opaque, dark brown in color, with 1/3 inch head. taste is coffee, bourbon, vanilla, and oak. The coffee plays well with the bourbon and never overwhelms it. It is there as a complementary flavor. One of the best coffee beers I have had. I love Revolution's barrel program about as much as any brewer's program. This one does not disappoint.
