Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bean Gene is the first variation we did with our Mean Gene barrel-aged Eugene Porter.

After months socked away in bourbon barrels, we steeped it with Dark Matter coffee beans prior to bottling. Smooth and well-balanced, with hints of vanilla and an in-your-face coffee flavor, enjoy it at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

On tap at Emporium Arcade Bar

Appearance - Very Dark. Some light getting through around edges. Not much. Small ring of head around the glass. Minimal, spotty lacing.

Smell - Warm bourbon, oak, coffee, chocolate malt.

Taste - Coffee and bourbon dominate without being overbearing. Slightly watery. The regular Eugene base really takes a backseat here. I can barely recognize it.

Mouthfeel - Thin body, medium carbonation, finishes sticky and dry.

Overall - Underwhelming but still not bad. I love the regular Eugene so I had high hopes for this one. Some people said it was better than KBS. It's not even close to KBS. Too light and watery for a bourbon barrel beer, in my opinion. I'll pass on this one next time.

Infected, WTF? Unbelievable they would put this out knowing people will pay $16-20 per bottle. Do some quality control or else it will come back to haunt you. Just like Bourbon County, I will certainly think twice before buying Revolution again....

I bought two bottles of this two years ago. The first one was infected, and I've put off opening this second bottle, but enough is enough and tonight is the night.

Bottle gushed over upon opening - not a great start. Beer pours a dark brown almost black with a thick strong fizzy head. Head dissipates leaving a tan slick along the top of the beer.

Aroma is slightly tart, with an odd metallic notes. Coffee comes through but the coffee aroma is a green peppery coffee aroma. very very acidic on the nose.

Taste has notes of coffee and chocolate before giving way to a tart peppery finish. Not much barrel character in here even as it warms up.

Feel is very fizzy - lots of carbonation here - especially noticeable for a barrel aged beer. Otherwise its pretty smooth. Dry and tart on the finish.

Overall this wasn't so awful that it was a drain pour, but it was certainly off and tasted weird for what it was. That being said, its an infected beer and its pretty bad. I'll gladly give this a second try if they ever bring it back.

A - gusher, so disappointing after spending almost 20 bucks on this bottle. Look is nice in the glass, dark brown black with a mocha head that sticks and leaves nice lacing
S- sour cherry, butterscotch and slight bourbon. Yup, this is infected.
T- God damn this is dissapointing, sour cherry and butterscotch dominate. Slight bourbon, some roasted malts but these are almost completely covered up by the infection.
M- medium mouthfeel. Alcohol covered. Aftertaste you can almost taste what the beer was supposed to taste like - some mild bourbon and coffee.
O- ohhhh boy. The homebrewer in me wants to say I understand. The consumer in me wants to swear off revolution brewing forever. This is infected to the max. And from the other reviews on here and Greg's Beer Review's review of it I know it's not just me. Almost 20 bucks down the effin' drain.
