Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bean Gene is the first variation we did with our Mean Gene barrel-aged Eugene Porter.

After months socked away in bourbon barrels, we steeped it with Dark Matter coffee beans prior to bottling. Smooth and well-balanced, with hints of vanilla and an in-your-face coffee flavor, enjoy it at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Deep, black color with a firm finger of head in the snifter.

Both sweet and hot smells of bourbon and oak, and some peppery coffee notes behind that. Smells like Jim Beam actually.

Rush of coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, oak, bourbon, chocolate, and alcohol. Man, it's good. I can't emphasize enough how good this beer tastes.

Feel is creamy, thick, smooth, yet still properly carbonated. Dry, boozy finish.

So I wasn't expecting the awesomeness contained in this bottle. Eugene is a solid porter, I guess I figured I'd be tasting some vanilla-coffee infused Eugene. What I got was an incredible beer completely set apart from Eugene. This should easily be world-class. Wow.

Incredibly carbonated, smell is a mixture of coffee bourbon, and metal. Taste was slightly coffee and chocolate which was overwhelmed by tart cherries. Obviously an infected bottle. Super disappointing.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter
2014 vintage, I believe

Pours dark brown/black color with small foamy off-white head. Smells of coffee, roasted malt & chocolate. Tastes of coffee laced with cocoa & vanilla, earthy wood, a bit of dark fruit on the finish. Medium body with low carbonation, foamy mouthfeel and finish. Nice barrel notes throughout

Unknown vintage; drank 9/10/15 on draft @ Sheffields.

Black/brown appearance.

Minimal dark tan head; minimal lace.

Pepper heat, chocolate syrup & roasted coffee bean notes in the nose.

Medium thick, creamy mouthfeel.

Chocolate syrup & roasted coffee bean flavors up front; pepper heat notes on the finish. Booze heat emerged as this warmed. An above average coffee brew, for sure.

I bought two bottles of this two years ago. The first one was infected, and I've put off opening this second bottle, but enough is enough and tonight is the night.

Bottle gushed over upon opening - not a great start. Beer pours a dark brown almost black with a thick strong fizzy head. Head dissipates leaving a tan slick along the top of the beer.

Aroma is slightly tart, with an odd metallic notes. Coffee comes through but the coffee aroma is a green peppery coffee aroma. very very acidic on the nose.

Taste has notes of coffee and chocolate before giving way to a tart peppery finish. Not much barrel character in here even as it warms up.

Feel is very fizzy - lots of carbonation here - especially noticeable for a barrel aged beer. Otherwise its pretty smooth. Dry and tart on the finish.

Overall this wasn't so awful that it was a drain pour, but it was certainly off and tasted weird for what it was. That being said, its an infected beer and its pretty bad. I'll gladly give this a second try if they ever bring it back.

Extremely tart, and gushed all over the counter.

Infected, WTF? Unbelievable they would put this out knowing people will pay $16-20 per bottle. Do some quality control or else it will come back to haunt you. Just like Bourbon County, I will certainly think twice before buying Revolution again....

Beautiful looking beer, dark brown body with a khaki colored head.
Picking up on dominant aromas of bourbon and slight coffee.
Taste follows suit, bourbon dominates and there is a minimal amount of coffee and some oak in the aftertaste. Nothing really blows me away.
Smooth and easy mouth feel a little too light.
Overall, this was a decent beer, but didn't live up to my expectations; thankfully this one wasn't infected like I have seen in other reviews.
