Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bean Gene is the first variation we did with our Mean Gene barrel-aged Eugene Porter.

After months socked away in bourbon barrels, we steeped it with Dark Matter coffee beans prior to bottling. Smooth and well-balanced, with hints of vanilla and an in-your-face coffee flavor, enjoy it at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

On tap at Revolution. Ordered alongside Mean Gene in 5oz glasses today, 12/18/2013.

Pours a relatively placid black body, minimal head. Looks very flat compared to Mean Gene sitting next to it. Not a lot of retention or lacing. Just about what I'd expect from black coffee, really.

Smells like black espresso. So rich. Complemented by dark chocolate and a bit of barrel vanilla. Very nicely done.

Flavor is black coffee flavors without the bitterness that is complemented by milk chocolate sweetness, bourbon, and barrel vanilla. Nice profile, not quite BCBCS but very enjoyable version of Eugene.

Medium to thinner body, good smooth flavor that just begs to be drank. Enjoyable, but a bit thin. As expected given the base porter.

I dug the coffee in this one, rich coffee and chocolate flavor. A bit thin but recommended.

Really excited to have found this on tap. Pours opaque, dark brown in color, with 1/3 inch head. taste is coffee, bourbon, vanilla, and oak. The coffee plays well with the bourbon and never overwhelms it. It is there as a complementary flavor. One of the best coffee beers I have had. I love Revolution's barrel program about as much as any brewer's program. This one does not disappoint.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head. Head retention is good, and there's a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is very nice, the brew smells like bourbon, vanilla, coffee, roasted malt, and some bittersweet chocolate. For the most part I think the taste is just like the aroma, but there's also some milk chocolate and caramel noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's smooth and a bit slick with moderate carbonation. I thought this was a pretty good brew. Nice and tasty, and it's also easy to drink. $16.99 a bomber and worth every penny. Might have to grab another one soon!

8oz pour into snifter by revolution brewpub staff.

reviewed from notes on 11/18/12.

Appearance: dark black bodied beer with a thin ring of brown head around the beer glass.

Smell: fresh cold pressed expresso, vanilla, and chocolate. I could smell this all day!

Taste: Fresh premium expresso that super roasty and not at all bitter. A nice dose of bourbon and a lot of big vanilla notes. Milk chocolate.

Mouthfeel: light end of a medium bodied beer with low carbonation. The beer is thin. Its really drinkable and smooth BA porter. A touch of silkiness and not a hint of harshness from the ABV it really well hidden in this beer.

Overall: This beer smells and tastes wonderfully. It could be a little bit thicker and it would really make this beer phenomenal. Stilll really enjoyed this local treat! its my first revolution beer and i think that they are doing things right at revolution!

22 oz picked up in Ohio on the way back from Michigan for Christams.
Very dark brown, near black pour. Plenty thick. About a finger of frothy light tan head.

Aroma, Coffee and barrel heavy up front. Some roast malt, vanilla, toffee actually a bit of those as well. Lesser chocolates.

Taste, Quite a bit of that barrel again up front. Roast malt and coffee. Vanilla, toffee, cocoa. Finishes with some milk chocolate like notes, dark chocolate and kahlua like coffee.

Just past the middle body wise. A near creamy carbonation. Coats well enough. Just minimal alcohol presence with a mild warming down the throat.

Very nice. Probably needs to be drank now before anything fades.

Bottle in trade. Thanks! Pours black into the glass with a one finger mocha head. Aroma of lots of spicy earthy coffee, bourbon, a bit of roast and fruits, more bourbon. Not much oak or vanilla coming from the barrel integration here, mainly just straight bourbon. Flavor is lots of coffee, some sweet chocolate, big bourbon punch, lingering oak and light vanilla roasted coffee. Medium body with medium carbonation. Not super hot but very bourbon forward flavor here. Gotta like the stuff to like this and it's a bit over the top. Beer really isn't carrying the barrel well.

22oz bottle courtesy of Holland, thanks a lot for the trade. Pretty cool box that this comes in, the cardboard is sort of raised/ridged so that it is like wood. Color is black or possibly super dark brown, good head too. Aroma is bourbon barrel, booze, sweet vanilla, not bad but no coffee that I could detect. Flavor is a nice bourbon vanilla, wood, hints of chocolate but again no coffee that my palate can pick up. My only complaint is that this is a little thin, I like bourbon barrel beers to be thicker. Still, nice flavor and aroma on this one and it does go down quite easily.

Horrendously expensive pours were available at the Emporium Arcade in Chicago. At first, I was like "no way, Joe-say," but then after 5 Yum Yums 12 bucks for 10 ounces somehow began to sound reasonable.

It was goddamn tasty.

Smells of big coffee, sweet chocolate, and just a little wisp of booze burn.

Tastes like it smells, like a glass of Autocrat chocolate milk with a tiny splash of bourbon in it. Starts off with roasted barely, moving quickly into coffee and dark chocolate along with some nodes of vanilla and coconut, ending with a touch of booze.

Very good. Significantly better than BCBS Coffee.
