Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bean Gene is the first variation we did with our Mean Gene barrel-aged Eugene Porter.

After months socked away in bourbon barrels, we steeped it with Dark Matter coffee beans prior to bottling. Smooth and well-balanced, with hints of vanilla and an in-your-face coffee flavor, enjoy it at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Pours dark brown edging black with a tremendous amount of airy light brown carbonation that dissipates rather quickly but leaves sticky lacing.

Fresh brewed coffee, chocolate, roasty, nutty, and some faint vanilla sweetness.

The coffee flavor stands front and center all the way through, the vanilla stands out more in flavor; whereas, the chocolate notes seem to be more subtle than in the aroma. Huge coffee flavor, that's all that matters :).

Heavy-bodied, low carbonation, roasty, and semi-sweet.

Overall, as an avid coffee fan, I was thoroughly expecting to enjoy this and I was not let down! As a bourbon lover as well, I would have appreciated a little more bourbon heat, but this is delicious as it is!

Appearance: Spumes out of the bottle but, as often happens with such beers, when you get it in the glass the head fades quickly; the fudge brown liquid winds up with a tan film; decent lacing action, with a paisley pattern on the glass

Smell: Chocolate, Bourbon, vanilla and coffee are all in the mix, with the Bourbon and vanilla dominant

Taste: As in the aroma, the Bourbon and vanilla flavors dominate the front end and linger through the finish; underneath, there is chocolate and a slight edge of coffee; the finish is rather sweet

Mouthfeel: Surprisingly thin with the type of carbonation that overwhelms the palate and creates an airy mouthfeel

Overall: Pretty disappointed by this beer, given the ratings here - the flavors lack balance, the overall effect is too sweet and don't get me started on the mouthfeel

Dark brown with tan head that quickly fades. Smells of coffee and chocolate. Coffee taste, some barrel creaminess, certainly not as thick or strong as some of the higher ABV barrel-aged beers. Less barrel taste, more porter and coffee taste. Not bitter enough, though--a little too sweet. Nice vanilla aftertaste, though. Pretty thin mouthfeel. Could be great with some more bitterness, but not a huge hit with me.
