Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Bean Gene is the first variation we did with our Mean Gene barrel-aged Eugene Porter.

After months socked away in bourbon barrels, we steeped it with Dark Matter coffee beans prior to bottling. Smooth and well-balanced, with hints of vanilla and an in-your-face coffee flavor, enjoy it at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Rather sweet, and a bit fruity, contrary to expectations. Still had a fair amount of coffee flavor. I appreciated the effort to make quite a smooth, barrel-aged coffee porter, rather than a big, BA stout. That said, for coffee porters, I prefer the execution of O'so's Convenient Distraction (the regular, un-aged version).

Bottle received in a recent trade.

This one pours a darkish black, with a very small head, and basically no lacing.

Smells like light coffee, and some bourbon, and maybe a bit of chocolate.

This suffers from an oversweetness, and nothing to balance it out. The bourbon, the coffee, and the chocolate malt all add sweetness, and there's no bitterness or roast to balance it out. The coffee itself feels a little insipid and bland, and the bourbon feels a little bit weak and maybe slightly astringent- the only non-sweet flavor here. I'm seriously disappointed in this one.

This has too thin of a body for the style, the body can't handle the rest of the beer. It's got a lower level of carbonation.

I've loved a ton of things in the Revolution barrel-aged series, but I can't say much positive about this one.

An older bottle that was a gusher. The smell is stale, the feel is thin.

Need to revisit in a fresher incarnation but I'm disinclined to spend money on another bottle based on how poorly this aged. Yes, a year is not ideal for a coffee porter but it should not become undrinkable in that time frame IMHO.

T- full of flavored with bourbon, coffee, vanilla, chocolate, oak, booze, caramel

i love the execution of this beer. i like that its just a quick barrel treatment, not years or anything. it lets the flavors of all the dark malt in the base porter stay fresh and distinct, not get too well integrated that they lose their original identity. it also puts the bourbon and oak as just an accent rather than a major flavor, and i think thats the exception to the rule these days, its always so big and bold on the whiskey, its nice to have this be a beer first. the coffee is unique, a little bit acidic, but with some fruity notes to it, raisins or blueberries or both. pretty neat. it comes on almost entirely in the finish, and the base porter is rich and vibrant anyway, so it all works super well together. an impressive brew, in a common style, but with a lot of distinction. i have had very few this memorable. it was awesome to have this with the regular coffee gene, the base eugene, and the blueberry edition all on tap at the brewery in once sitting. really a wonderful series of beers worth seeking out. some of the best work thee guys have ever done in my opinion!
