Served in a snifter at Firkin.

Well, thanks, Kirk; if only I had that background info at the bar... Anyway, this stuff pours a dark ruby-garnet-black-brown topped by over a finger of khaki foam. The nose comprises candied orange peel, light grapefruit zest, clove, black pepper, light mandarin orange syrup (which, in retrospect, was probably really some apricot character), and some very light toasted sourdough way in the background. The taste brings in more of the same, though everything is spicier and less fruity, and there's some banana, very light cocoa powder, and mild sour rye added in. The finish is awash in black pepper. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a lightly grainy feel. Overall, a generally enjoyable dark saison, one that seems to integrate the fruit pretty well, though the overtly-spicy yeast verges on a clash therewith.

Supposedly this beer is a blend of Coup d'etat and Eugene with an Apricot purée added and then refermented. A curious blend if true.

Dark caramel brown. Clear and translucent. Served in a tulip with a fairly large off white head. Aroma is very fruity with lots of yeasty phenols. There is a light seeetness in the mix with a touch of floral. Taste has a bit of sweet and sour going on. Caramel and fruits. I wouldn't necessarily identify it as apricot if it weren't listed on the menu, but its certainly fruity with a touch of lemon pepper. Lighter medium bodied with a slight chewiness and an aggressive dry pepper spice. Overall a nice beer and an interesting twist on the Saison which I enjoyed.

On-tap at the brewpub. 5oz taster glass.

A - Lightly hazed milk chocolate brown body, topped by a partial off-white cap and thin collar. Again, a plethora of lacing lingers as the beer is consumed.

S - Phenolic and spicy yeast dominates, with a hint of citrus zest and underripe stone fruit. There's also a mild roast and cocoa note that is consistent with the darker-than-usual appearance.

T - Tate is also heavy on peppery, phenolic, and spicy yeast note, with notes of cocoa and stone fruit in the periphery. Finishes yeasty, with a light sourdough tanginess to it. The 7.3% ABV is well-concealed.

M - Zesty carbonation, medium body, grain and chewy texture, and bone dry. No obvious alcohol warmth.

D - Strange beer that doesn't entirely work for me. Not sure if apricots go well with dark Saisons and the yeast is far to potent to let either facet really shine. I'd skip this one with the multitude of other options available.
