Notes: The great Jamaican Beer we know today has set the standard by which other beers are measured since 1928. Today the company is a subsidiary of one of the largest and most profitable beverage and alcohol conglomerates Heineken.

A beautiful amber lager with low butterscotch flavour, full bodied and a smooth post palate sensation. Lager beer, light gold colour.

Typical lager appearance with no lacing and little to no head, nothing off- putting about the smell, but my nose isn't the best these days. Too much gun powder, diesel fumes, and gasoline in my days. Taste is slightly skunky, in a good way, but mostly average and light, true to the style. FEEL- that's where it gets interesting to me. Little to moderate carbonation, head on. But give it a vigorous swish around the palate and it gets very very smooth. Strange. I like it. At 4.7% ABV it makes an excellent Florida Summer session pounder. Overall I rate a 2.75 instead of ever so slightly higher for two main reasons. 1- At 4.7% abv, I'd have to drink, lik, 15 or so of these in a short amount of time to be convinced to jump from the top of the tree into the pool (and that's just because the climb is a bitch). 2- 11.2 instead of 12 oz? I know, i know... it's less than a shot glass but I'm a stickler. 'Merica

Presentation: 12oz custom brown "shorty" bottle with a red & white painted label. No freshness date. Label states: "For over 65 years Red Stripe has embodied the spirit, rhythum and pulse of Jamaica and its people." -- hey, I thought that was marijuana that did that?

Appearance: Clear pale gold in colour with lively carbonation and a healthy creamy white lace of a head.

Smell: Faint hop and grain aroma, with a touch of sulfur.

Taste: Light to medium body. Mouthfeel is fairly smooth and creamy on the palate (from the carbonation). Upfront dextrin sweetness followed by a rather lemon/lime hop bitterness, a slight crisp snap and a brush of coarse hop leaf on the palate. Finishes with a light grain dryness and grain/steely flavour.

Notes: Not a bad brew. Refreshing. Goes great with jerked foods or one of my favourites, curried goat. They sell it at Rhythm & Spice Caribbean Grill in Central Sq. Cambridge, MA. An excellent match with all of their food.

Red Stripe has a thick, white head and a very clear, straw appearance. Carbonation is high. Barley is very noticeable in the aroma, and it also has a sort of spicy smell. The taste is quite bready, with grassy aspects. Red Stripe has a nice hop balance. Mouth-feel is light and watery, with the beer finishing crisp and rather wet. Overall, I was very pleased with this beer and would drink it again. Hurray, beer!

Grenade style bottle, the brew is a clear pale yellow color with white cap. Some spotty lace sticks to the glass.

This smells sweet with grain and mild grassiness then mostly carbonic character like seltzer water.

It tastes sweet with cereal graininess, sulfur, corn and minimal mineral profile.

This is light bodied and modestly carbonated. Honestly not terrible but not good either.

Best by date : 8/23/17 | Brewed & bottled by DESNOES & GEDDES Limited, Kingston, Jamaica.

Pours clear gold, with white head.

Aroma is sweet, bready malt, wet straw, and some floral hops.

Taste is similar to aroma, but less sweet, and less intense/saturated. There is a light, pleasant, bitterness on the finish.

Feel is light/watery, sliding into light/oily, with very fine carbonation tingle, that works with the light bitterness to provide a dry, crisp finish.

AALs are NOT my thing. The aroma is especially what turns me off. HOWEVER....., this stopped just short of that -
[Edit :4/29/20 - fresh ones just showed up, & aroma, taste & overall are better - adjusted ratings to reflect that]-
, then surprised me with better flavor, & a nice crisp bitterness, rather than a rounded-off corn sweetness. I actually like it, and wouldn't mind having it again, from time to time.
[Edit 4/29/20 : These fresh , remind me of the vonTrapp Helles that I've been drinking lately, though a notch or so below that.]

Had a couple of these with dinner tonight. Poured out of the short little brown bottles and into a standard pint glass. Color is very pale, yellowy and pretty much perfectly transparent. A decent number of little bubbles rising up from the bottom of the glass. Pouring a little quickly produces a big foamy head that shrinks away into a little coating on top after a little while; seems to shrink quicker on a slower pour. Actually leaves a good bit of a lacy trail behind on the sides of the glass as you drink it.

Got a good whiff of "standard beer smell" upon opening and pouring the first bottle, not as much with the second. Once in the glass the smell is pretty faint. What is there isn't anything special; it's a smell that might be a little funky if it was stronger, but as is it's barely noticeable.

Taste, like color and smell, is pretty light. What is there isn't bad at all--a light grain/bread sort of flavor is what I'm picking up the most, and bready lagers are fine by me--it could just use a bit more "oomph." Interestingly, this beer seemed to go VERY nicely with food; I drank about half of my first one (and some of my second one) while eating some pasta with a garlic butter sauce and a little bit of paprika, and the beer seemed to become more flavorful when accompanied by food than it was on its own--as soon as I'd had a bite of food, I started picking up a bit of an almost fruity sort of flavor when I had another drink. A bite of food makes your beer taste better and a drink of beer makes your food taste better... always a good thing.

Feel is... well, it's pretty fizzy and light. Very easy to drink quite a bit of it quickly. Maybe a little *too* fizzy at times, it's not quite soda-like but it's not that far off either.

Overall, I'm surprisingly impressed by this one. It's light, but what is there is far from bad; certainly a few steps up from a glass of plain, flavorless, alcohol-free water. This is definitely a "mealtime beer" rather than a "have one beer at the end of the day" beer. If you feel like having two or three lighter beers with some good food rather than one strong, flavorful beer as a meal unto itself, Red Stripe fills that role nicely... and I can definitely imagine this being a good beer to have around when the weather's a bit warmer and you're chowing down on some sweet and spicy Caribbean-style food. I may have to revisit this one when it warms up a bit, and I'll definitely have to remember to make sure to have a few "at the source" if I ever end up visiting Jamaica at some point.

I'm judging it for what it is , a cheap aal.

That being said , its still bad lol. Weird skunk flavor with some odd burnt plastic type smell ...

Glad I tried it, like I am with all beers but.... I would never buy it again lol.

Let's face it, the Jamaican's are known best for a substance other than beer. If my recollection is correct, the Rastafarian religion prohibits alcohol (though many of it's purported practitioners don't seem to know this). In any case, it has always been a disappointing beer for the price.

I get the flavor they were going with this for being a jamaican style lager beer. But it just isnt my thing really. The flavor is odd for my tastes. Not bad , just not to my tastes.

I honestly only tried this beer because i saw it on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and I expected it to taste pretty bad actually. I was mind-blown by how smooth and flavorful this is and it became my favorite beer. It pours a medium gold color, with a smell of sweet grain and a bit of spice. The taste is great with a good level of carbonation and a mix of slightly sweet grain and hops with a smooth, clean, yet dry finish.

Not much to say here. The lace lasted...surprise. Otherwise this is just another American adjunct beer. Jamaican style? Give me a break. This tastes like a Pabst Blue Ribbon with a tad more bitterness. It's sad that many of the once notable beers from other countries (Kirin, Harp, Becks, Lowenbrau...I could go on and on) have been bought by corporate America's bean counters and marketing geniuses for their name and past reputation. This is quite possibly the reason for the craft beer surge. We know better. Excuse the rant. Back to Red Stripe. No worse than a Heineken, if you get my drift. American adjunct lager? Go for a Narraganset if you can find one.

Always been a nice drinkable lager, had this brew at the Naked Fish with some grilled tuna and it did a great job of washing it down.

330ml bottle into lager glass, best before 6/24/2018. Pours slightly hazy pale golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense and rocky white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon, cracker, corn, white bread dough, light honey, and light herbal/grassy earthiness. Okay aromas with pale malt/corn and mild earthy hop notes; with solid strength. A bit too fruity/yeasty. Taste of lemon, cracker, corn, white bread dough, light honey, and light herbal/grassy earthiness. Very mild herbal/grassy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, cracker, corn, white bread dough, light honey, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness of pale malt/corn and mild earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Nicely clean on lager flavors, not too fruity/yeasty. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is good. A bit thin, but not watery feeling. Overall this is a solid adjunct pale lager. Good robustness of malt/corn and mild earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Clean malt/grainy corn flavors with touches of balancing hops. An enjoyable offering, and good style example. Met my expectations.

Not as good as Budweiser. Poured from a can into a pint glass. Clear yellow, thin head and lacing. Sweet grassy smell and taste. Thin feel. Bought on a whim at a bottle store.

I love this beer.

Had it for the first time on my honeymoon last year to Jamaica and this stuff is EVERYWHERE there. 6 AM we arrive and our driver stops on the way to the resort to buy us a Red Stripe...not kidding.

This is a macro, but a really good one. It smells skunky, but for some reason I really enjoy the smell of it. This is infinitely better than Bud or Miller.

Taste is very light and it is highly drinkable. Tastes a bit of rice and corn.

Hooray Beer!

No problem, mon.

I tried a few of these on different occasions before I gave it an official review. At first I thought I might have purchased a spoiled beer, but it turns out Red Stripe smells and tastes musty to me.

It had a musty-funk like smell mixed with a hint of skunk.

The taste didn't completely match the aroma, but it came close. The taste had a musty grain flavor. There was a slight hint of hops in the background but the grain taste kept it from surfacing. There really isn't a whole lot to say about the taste. It had all the characteristics of any other adjunct lager, only with a grainy, musty cellar taste and smell.

For being a musty tasting beer there wasn't an offensive aftertaste. The drinkability was decent for its style. I would probably drink this over a Budweiser.

Conclusion: while this may be swill, it is at least distinctive in its swill-ness. Given its style it was not good or bad - it was simply "eeehh, take it or leave it mahn"

A clear, pale straw colored beer with a snowy white fluffy head.

Light, crisp aroma. Slightly pungent and a little malty.

Pilsner malt and slight hops to give flavor balance. More of a flavor profile than most American style lagers. But, still along the same lines.

Light, refreshing mouthfeel with a crisp, clean finish.

I would consider this a small step up from Budweiser, etc.
