330 ml bottle purchased from the LCBO, best before date of 11/8/17. Consumed 8/23/16.

A: Black. None more black. Impressive head at first pour that diminished quickly.

S: Bitter dark chocolate, dark fruits, metal. The booziness is overwhelming. Brings to mind mostly red wine or whiskey. I suspect there are adjuncts. Honestly I expected more.

T: Woah. The booziness is overwhelming. (again) Taste of dark fruit. Very little hop presence, which for me is usually a good thing in a stout, but there are no real malt flavours that I can pick up to carry it. Aftertaste of dark fruit again, as well as a smokey almost whiskey character. Certain that adjuncts are used. Cola flavour lingers on the palate.

M: Thin. So very thin. I don't know if that's because it's not all barley, but I suspect that's the corn.

O: I'm not really sure what to make of this... I wasn't getting any crazy sweetness like I was promised, at least not like other sweet stouts like Young's Double Chocolate. Still, I feel like I might be missing something. Honestly, it doesn't taste like beer to me at all. It's making me sick.

Honestly, I averaged my scores, and was pretty comfortable at a 2.6 overall rating. After finishing the glass, I feel like I'm being generous giving it a 2. But, as Professor Oak says; "There's a time and place for everything, but not now."

Pours pitch black with a 1 finger foamy tan head that was full of bubbles of all sizes which crackled and popped as the head dissipated very slowly and left very good spotty foamy lacing coating the sides.

Smells of roasted malt, mineral water, dark fruit like plum and black cherry, dark chocolate and a fruity sweetness. Nose is malty yet a lot sweeter smelling than I expected, but still interesting and nice to inhale.

Tastes very sweet like it smells, but with the additions of brown sugar, maple syrup, cocoa nibs, raisins and black licorice. In the finish I got currants and coffee grinds to go along with the dark fruit like plum, dates and black cherry, and like the nose it had flavors of dark chocolate, roasted malt, mineral water and a fruity sweetness. Light ashy notes and what seem like a hoppy sweetness creep through making for a sweeter than I like stout, yet someone still enjoyable.

Feel is thin and watery with a slight bitterness, mild carbonation and an overall sweetness that took me by surprise. Overall better than the BA Score indicates, my friend Jim brought me back 2 bottles from the island and I enjoyed them both. Not the best stout out there but worth trying since it hides the ABV quite well.

Feels a bit thin, less robust and not as full-flavored as other stouts. The most prominent taste I get is toasted (not burned) caramel; I can't help but wonder if that's intentional given the Caribbean origin (think molasses, rum, etc). Light on carbonation as well.

Is it my favorite stout? No. Is it drinkable? Very! Glad that it's a regular option where I live, but not my first choice. I bet this would pair very nicely with Caribbean food.

Smell - Dark chocolate, licorice, some caramel very sweet smell.

Taste - Chocolate, roasted malts, some toffee little nutty.

Feel - Pretty thin feel medium body well carbonated.

Overall - A decent beer little thin.

9.6 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/30/2015. Pours clear nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toasted brown bread, caramel, brown sugar, and herbal; with light nuttiness, licorice, raisin, plum, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toasted brown bread, caramel, brown sugar, and herbal; with light nuttiness, licorice, raisin, plum, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toasted brown bread, caramel, brown sugar, dark fruits, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roast/hop bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly creamy/grainy, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice Tropical-styled Foreign stout. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Black pour, brown to the edge, barely less dark than your average stout. Aroma was a bit boozy, but within the realm of average.

Taste kicks down the standard bitter roasting, not much in the way of chocolate malt droppin' chocolate tones, nothing in terms of sweetness, all the hallmarks of the export stout style. Sometimes returning to these more traditional styles after all the barrels and adjuncts makes you realize we've moved on for the better. Anyways, wish this toned down the alcohol burn and bitter roastiness because those are pretty much the main/and/or only flavors going on throughout.

Awwww, look at the cute little 9.6 oz bottle! Anyways, the usage of cereal adjuncts is definitely palpable on the nose - otherwise, I get lots of molasses, cola, and brown sugar. Some hoppy flourishes also appear, gently. Mainly, though, this beer captures a lot of Caribbean essence through its darkly sugary character (though I could do without the excessive adjuncts). Its flavor is interesting, not like any other stout I've had, in fact. It opens up with an intense brown sugar quality, backed by some molasses; it ends rather nutty with a gentle bitterness. I definitely taste adjuncts here, though it never quite ruins things. This feels rather light and fizzy, definitely appropriate of a "Caribbean" stout if nothing else. By no means is this my favorite stout. But, I'm a firm believer in the adage "all beers have a time and place" (i.e.: Bud Light can work when its six million degrees out, and Bud Light Chelada is a pure comedy beer) - this would be far more enjoyable in its natural habitat, or with Jamaican cuisine.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. this pitch black brew has almost zero carbonation and has a tan to brown head. Dragon Stout has an excellent semi sweet coffee flavor and goes down extremely smooth. I would love to have another one!!!

DATE TASTED: April 9, 2015... GLASSWARE: Guinness retro pint... OCCASION: a stout battle--Lion vs. Dragon... APPEARANCE: a jet black body that sees its brown head thin with some tracings and crests of lace... AROMA: some caramel to start, with pungent sugars and bubblegum; malts are dry biscuit; hops are tough to isolate... PALATE: lively, thick as molasses and creamy at the finish--fizzy at the teeth... TASTE: sugary sweet, with some mint leaves, pear and apple, and cola--a thin profile that doesn't deter its drinker from enjoyment, but does limit the conversation about it; some cherry factors in late... OVERALL: a beer that hides its alcohol content well; the ending flavor suggests a slight astringency; the wee bottles (9.6 fluid ounces) seem quaint but stunted...a loser to the Lion Stout, but little shame in that...

I like the occasional stout but I don't fancy the coffee taste. I also dislike ice coffee. But I digress. This is actually a nice little power packed beer that is sweeter than the usual stout, which is good, but alas, it is a tad too sweet.
Ante up the smoke flavour a notch and tone down the sweetness a bit and I will be sold.
Even so, I don't mind it at all. And the nose is probably one of my favourites.

Very dark brown; very good head and lacing.

Feel: very smooth; soft, medium carbonation.

Surprisingly hop forward nose.

O: OK but the aroma and flavor don't match the quality of the look and feel.

brought back from JA - expiration date 01 Nov 15. pours a dark, dark brown with a tan head, medium-low carbonation. faint smells of roasted malt, brown sugar and dark chocolate, but not an overly aromatic brew. sweeter on the palate, with dark caramel malts leading the attack, plus something that makes me think of rum cake, and some chocolate on the finish. less roasted than Guinness foreign extra; boozier, too, but that may be from the pronounced sweetness. could make an interesting beer float with this one, but too sweet for me to want more than one 284 mL bottle. don't think they have much diversity when it comes to beer down on the island, so i could see reaching for this one after a few days of red stripe.

Small format 300 ml bottle poured into a Guinness glass. A dark blackish brown, opaque and with a decent amount of light tawny brown head that breaks quickly. Micheal Lewis includes detailed tech specs for this beer in his Classic Beer Style Series book on Stout. Of note, t. his beer contains caramel coloring and brewer's corn syrup (ugh) and the brewer saw fit to note that the beer employs a "special beer flavoring extract" for flavor maturation. Um, what the fuck? That sounds sinister but I suppose it could mean almost anything, including adding soured or otherwise aged beer to fresh batches. In any event, my expectations were not terribly high and perhaps because of this, the beer exceeded them. Aroma includes the expected coffee and chocolate elements but there is also a distinct graininess that comes off like cheap six-row malt and a fruity character that comes off a bit like tart red wine and cherry syrup. This tartness carries over onto the palate as well, a vinous character that I've encountered in other stouts and porters here and there. Not unwelcome amidst the smoky caramel and chocolate milk flavors, maybe a little molasses. Comes off as overly attenuated with the body too thin and the carbonation too high. Finishes rather grainy and astringent, almost a low grade alcohol burn. The sweetness becomes cloying quite quickly and this could be one of the sweetest stouts I've sampled to date. Still, not undrinkable and a good example of the style from a non-craft island brewery.

A pitch black appearance with a good initial head that did not last long. Lacing was quite good.

Aroma of coffee, chocolate and roasted malt.

The taste is of coffee, sweetness, chocolate and brown sugar. There is a lactose element in the flavour as well. Dragon Stout is very sweet and this dominates the subtle bitterness that is also present. Much more sweet than Guinness Foreign Extra which is also a 7.5% FES.

Overall this is very enjoyable if you like coffee flavour and sweetness in a stout. Not hugely complex but tasty enough to be good.

Bucky warily picked up a bottle of Dragon Stout from his local liquor store, having heard some less than stellar reviews of this beer. Dragon Stout is brewed by Red Stripe of Kingston Jamaica and is a healthy 7.2% alcohol by volume. The beer came in a tiny 300 ml brown bottle with a best before date of October 21, 2015.

Dragon Stout poured a very dark cola brown that was impervious to light, with about 1.5” of bubbly tan head which quickly faded to a thin collar of foam, leaving some modest lacing down the glass. Its aroma was a mix of the good and not quite so good…a sweet chocolate milk with a not so pleasant herbal smell thrown in for good measure. Luckily the flavour was more pleasant than the aroma, a boozy sweet chocolate milk with a hint of dark roasted coffee..quite nice though not as flavourful as most North American stouts. Almost no bitterness to this beer. The carbonation was soft as you would expect from a stout, detectable more at the back of the throat than on the tongue, and the beer had a creamy mouth feel. I would call this brew medium bodied on balance, and reasonably priced at $2.00 per 300 ml bottle. Overall, not bad, and given the climate in which it is normally consumed I can understand why this beer is not as rich as its North American counterparts.

Bottle purchased from Beers of the World in Henrietta, NY. Cute little 9.3 oz bottle.

Pours a fairly dark black, with a foamy 2 inch inch head that recedes very quickly. There's a medium amount of lacing.

Smells include roasted malt, chocolate, and dark fruits.

The taste is similar. This is fairly dark fruity for an export stout, almost has some Belgian qualities to it. A bit sweet, with some prune and cherry flavors, some smoke, a good amount of roasted barley flavor, and some bitter chocolate.

Light bodied, not as thick as I'd hoped. Creamy but dry mouthfeel. Very drinkable.

This is a very serviceable export stout. Not the best ever, but quite tasty nonetheless.

Deep black color with red highlights and a thick two finger caramel head with medium retention and leaving laces.
Light but nice aroma of roasted malts, milky chocolate and molasses.
Lightly spiced and heavy sweet flavor with notes of licorice, roasted malts, molasses and cocoa butter. Dry aftertaste.
Medium to full body with low carbonation and a creamy sensation. Alcohol of 7.5% abv is completely hidden.
I found it a bit overly sweet with muffled hops and relatively low complexity.

From a 300 ml bottle to a pint glass.

I grabbed this off the shelf at the LCBO and thought I'd give it a try. This beer pours a deep dark brown/black with a minimal thumb of head which dissipates quickly leaving little behind. There is a metallic smell to the beer that is dominant, but I can also pick up sweet malts and some roast. The taste is pretty good; I found roast malts, treacle, coffee and some anise. The feel is good medium to high carbonation with a medium to full body.

From what I know stouts are very common in the Caribbean, and this is a good example of a native stout. Jamaica produces sugar, coffee, spices and molasses. All of these are present in this beer, it reminds me of time at the resorts in Jamaica.

Poured this from a bottle right into a plastic mug (it's all there was)

Appearance- Dark brown like a cola with just traces of a tan colored head that swiftly dissipated to no head at all. Already wishing this was on nitro.

Smell- upon fist pour caught a lot of cocoa with hints of raisin or plum but it faded to kind of a leather black licorice combo.

Taste- some roasty ness like cold brewed coffee, on the front end that gives way to a piney kind of hop and the whole thing finishes with a bit of roasted sweetness. I feel like sweetness might be derived from the alcohol as opposed to malt.

Mouthfeel- It doesn't drink like a stout, it doesn't have a heavy coating mouthfeel like a guinness. has a subtle alcohol warmth and a delightful carbonation bite that i think would make it ideal for getting a mellow buzz going on the Islands! I retract my nitro comment.

Overall-dont judge this beer by its appearance. I feel like it is highly tailored for the jamaican climate. An easy drinking stout, that has a refreshing crisp bite , an understated hop character and a boozy sweetness is just the thing to complement a roasted jerk chicken of pork dish. But is able to stand on its own.

Would order again, if say i was skipping a meal while vacationing.

Purchased at the LCBO 6 pack of 300ml bottles for $12.00. Price was right... wonder why

A- Started off well. Nice pop, excellent head, nice and dark

S- Not much here. Not much at all.

T- Highly carbonated. Very light on the tongue for a stout. Malty

M- Not bad, pretty ok. Ends dry believe it or not.

O- Not that great. Drinkable but nothing compared to other stouts. Tastes like a mass produced beer without much of anything to it

Food Pairing...

This ok example of a stout paired well with roasted lamb (as would any other stout would!)

Deep, dark brownish, almost black in color. The beer has a thick, blanket-like head. Its aroma is average... A hint of malt, some roasted grains, and a touch of alcohol. The taste is very sweet...think continental European stout. Sweet, with a little spice..cloying at times, with a fleshy fruitiness. Dark. The finish is moderately balanced with some bitterness, which just prevents cloying. Still, the beer is creamy and full, and satisfying.

300ml bottle. According to the label, this is brewed by 'Red Stripe', Kingston, Jamaica, as if a beer can brew another beer. Sheesh.

This beer pours a very, very dark cola brown hue (black, I suppose, once you step back), with pervasive reddish highlights, and three fingers of puffy, foamy, and effervescent beige head, which leaves some attractive graphic novel webbed lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of dry, dusty, bittersweet chocolate, roasted caramel malt, a banana, prune, and mushed apple fruitiness, mild milky coffee notes, a bit of herbal, earthy hops, and a hovering alcohol warmth. The taste is lightly toasted bready caramel malt, molasses, raw brown sugar, cocoa, mild, stewing Continental coffee, earthy anise, cola syrup, muddled herbal hops, and a agreeably weak alcohol astringency.

The bubbles are quite understated, the body a dense medium weight, genuinely smooth, and even a tad creamy, as that herbal tincture essence gets no play here. It finishes on the sweet side, sure, the caramel, chocolate, and fruit all settling in nicely together, yet a certain plain dryness balances things out.

A pleasant, well-flavoured export stout, the malt running rampant here, to a certain degree. Traditional, warming, and pretty drinkable. I'd sure like to get a bottle of island Guinness FES to compare side by side with this.

A-pour is a dark cola brown from the bottle to near black in the glass with a small tan head which is quickly dissapating leaving a minimal lace along the pint

S-some roasted malts , hints of boozey sweetness

T-odd has the taste of a 'ris' and 'milk/sweet stout' combined

MF-medium/big fizzey carbonation , full bodied , definately feel the abv's after a couple of beers

Ov-I like it , good beer from Jamaica

Picked this up at Turnpike Wine & Spirits in Oak Ridge, TN as part of a pick and choose assortment of porters and stouts. Didn't know anything about it but took notice of it the minute I poured it in the glass. The appearance was excellent and the head was perfect. The taste was most excellent, chocolate and coffee present. The creamy texture was the icing on the cake. This is the best stout I've ever had.
