Brewed by:
Firestone Walker Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our interpretation of the rustic Wallonian Saison style is a harmonious blend of rustic grains, spicy yeast and unique sauvignon blanc tones. Inviting lemon grass and gooseberry meet peppery spice and fresh grain aromas. Spicy Belgian yeast create a complex yet dry and refreshing canvas with splashes of citrus and stone fruit with a bright tropical white wine finish. Hop bitterness is assertive yet harmonious rounding out slightly tart and refreshing.

The beer pours a nice white foamy head that dissipates slightly and enough of the foam stays for quite a while. The beer itself is decent looking and borders on good. The beer is a clear pale gold that borders on medium. There are better looking saisons but it does the job.

The smell is good. It has as pretty nice rustic smell that well complemented by the hop notes. The beer has a nice lemon note with a light orange note. There is also a slight grain note as well.

The taste is good. The taste has a nice light tart note through the entire thing. The other notes consist of a nice lemon rind and orange note with a nice rustic spice note complementing it. The yeast also gives a nice spice to it.

The feel is decent. It's light bodied but it borders on medium, which detracts a little bit from the experience. The beer has some light carbonation that gives it a nice refreshing feel

Overall, a decent saison with some good notes.. It isn't the greatest but it's still fairly good and worth it. Go for it.

A: Pours a yellow color with 2 fingers of fluffy head that sticks around for a great while. Leaves some good lacing

S: Spicy yeast and some fruity phenolics up front, along with some wheat and graininess. Hops throw in a bit more spiciness and light citrus

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with Belgian yeast notes of fruit and spice, and then goes into some wheat and grainy malt notes. Grainy notes really take ahold mid-palate, followed by some spicy and very lightly citrusy hops. Finishes with more yeast notes

M: Medium bodied with fine carbonation

O: A solid farmhouse ale with a nice dry-hop addition that doesn't overwhelm the base. Very easy to drink and hides it's abv fantastically well

The beer is hazy straw yellow, with a thick white, soap-like head. The head does fizz down but continues to lace the glass. At first I got a whiff of mild hops but it was quickly followed by the citrus scents of orange and lemon. It had almost a sour smell to it as well. The beer tasted similar to the nose but with a stronger taste a wheat/grass flavor in it. I wish I got more of the sour and citrus flavors but oh well. Very drinkable beer, short flavor nice carbonation. Overall a great beer.

outstanding beer.
look: pours hazy straw color. decent head. no lace
smell...has that certain almost sour smell prevalent with saissons and farmhouse ales.
taste...this one has an almost sweet first impression, but settles into a sort of sour (not like a "sour" though). not hoppy but you can sense the hops somewhere in there. complex, i think is the word the "experts" use. this one is.
feel....almost like sparkling wine a first bit settled into a nice mellow "round" mouthfeel. can't figure out how to describe it any other way.
overall..fine, fine beer. whenever it shows up at Total Wine and Beer, I snatch up a few bottles.
poured from a big bottle into a sort of snifter glass.

this was a little too cold when i opened it..let it warm up a bit to really enjoy this complex ale.

Pours a cloudy straw yellow with a thin white head. Good retention. Smell is fresh citrus, a mix of orange and lemon, with apple and yeast present as well. Taste is a refreshing sweet orange with an earthy, bitter finish. Light mouth feel, with a spicy lingering on the tongue. Absolutely delicious saison.

Bomber into a Teku - bottled 3 months ago

L: Slighted hazy golden color, small off with head
S: Orange, citrus, a bit of barn yard,
T: Follows the nose, but saison yeast add a nice additional layer
M: Medium body, carb
O: A very nice surprise, no hit of the 7.5% abv, definitely will be picking this one up again.

Look - clear golden color
Smell - Citrus, yeast, orangey, barnyard
Taste - Lemon peel, peppery spice, fruity, hay, earthy

Overall - A very nice, easy drinking (especially for 7.5%) saison from FW. Not the best of the Prop series but definitely worth trying.

Pours two fingers of head on a clear light straw body.
The aroma is fresh cut orange and lemon zest.
The taste light and refreshing but contains flavor complexity: orange, tart, lemon.
The texture is crisp and fizzy.
Quite nice.

Not sure why BA has two entries for the same beer....oh well.... A highly under-rated saison IMHO. This is what I want from a saison. A perfect balance of earthy, funky, hoppy and dry. This is the type of beer I would always have on hand. Problem is, this one doesn't get sold and re-stocked with any frequency. The only bottles I can find on the shelves these days are one that are over 1 1/2 years old. And that is a sad shame.

Pours a clear golden body with a small white head with good retention. Aromas are yeasty and full of tart fruits like green apples and unripened cherries. Taste is sweet upfront, spicy like white pepper on the mid-palate, and full of yeastiness throughout and lingering long on the finish. A terrific saison.

Bottled June 9, 2014

Appearance: Sparkling clear straw-yellow with a modest white head that gradually subsides. Good looking beer.

Smell: Hay/grassy notes, mild barnyard funk, and mild fruity notes.

Taste: Mild grassy/hay notes, mild nondescript fruit notes and mild funk notes. The beer finishes moderately dry with some mild hop notes.

Mouth-feel: Light-bodied with a fairly high level of carbonation. good mouth-feel for the style.

Overall: Good Saison. Classic taste profile.

Very delicious Saison. A somewhat hazy straw yellow color with decent head retention. At first smell I got a nice apricot aroma then it moved to a white grape. At first taste I get a peppery grape which carries to the middle and finishes with a hoppy/wheat bitterness. Wish I had more than one!

Golden yellow in color and pretty clear. Decent head but it didn't linger long. Spicy floral notes, a bit of a white grape, and hints of citrus on the nose. More spice in the flavor and medium-light mouthfeel. Some hints of the citrus. Not outstanding but a great brew! If it was around here I'd keep it in the fridge.

Beautiful clear yellow but no much head or lacing. Nicely pungent. Taste develops well as the beer warm. It is floral and earthy, a good saison taste. I love saisons. This ones not my favorite, but it is a very good beer.

This seemed a successful blend of saison fun and farmhouse with some hop kick. I actually rated it a bit higher than my personal take on the beer ... I don't know that I enjoy the saison-hop combo and didn't find it fair to hold it against this beer. The look was cloudy and pretty orange-gold with a foamy head.

Glowing straw yellow with huge foamy head. Spicy and grassy yet slightly zesty (citrus). Dry finish followed by citrus notes and spicy beligium type yeast. Decent summer brew

Hazy straw yellow. White bubbly head.

A lot of spices. Peppercorn. Grassy and earthy. Very green and herbal. Bready and dry. Yeasty. Very Belgian like. Lemon fruitiness.

A bit on the spiced side so not my favorite, but enjoyable.

Appearance: straw yellow; clear; effervescent; huge frothy white head when poured into a tulip glass

Smell: grassy; peppery; citrus

Taste: very dry right up front; hops come in pretty quickly with lots of citrus; finishes dry with the hops lingering at the end

Mouthfeel: medium body with good amount of carbonation

Remarks: great example of a saison, although the amarillo hops dominate the flavor to me, making it more of a US saison. I'd drink it again.

Love the perfect earthy barnyard/fruity balance. Bottle I'm enjoying is 8 months old, or about 4 mos. past recommendation on label. Still fresh and tasty though. Firestone Walker has produced an enjoyable, interesting, and darn fun brew!

Bottled on 8/28/14, so almost a year old. FW recommends drinking within 4 months.

Besides this fact, I enjoyed this beer. So clear I could see right through it to the ball game on tv.

Earthy, barnyard, citrus, very dry finish with bitter after notes.

Will look for a fresh bottle.

Filled a growler at Ronnies Beverage Watehouse

Has some slight sour notes with a nice dry oak finish. Really great, and way better than the old bottle. Seek this out fresh.

Pale blonde/golden colour, 2 fingers of white head and some lace. Smell is spicy and yeasty, big hop presence, lemony points and a bit fruity, light funky yeast as it warms. Taste is quite hoppy leading to dpicy and fruity, medium bitterness, dry lemon and green apple, drying finish. Very dry, medium carbonation and medium body. Solid stuff, perhaps a bit too hoppy then I prefer for the style, still quite nice though.

This is a saison I could drink all day..except that's is on the stronger side. I love the additional citrus which must be from the dry hopping. Golden straw yellow. Minimal head. Less spicy than a traditional saison more hoppy..which ends up being very refreshing.

Session dry hopped saison's anyone?

From bottle into tulip. Clear crisp light gold, with good initial head and lacing.

S - aromas of spicy yeast with some pepper and coriander, creamy custard notes, banana toffee and white grapes. Florals, nice note aromas spring up with a great freshness and spring floral tones.

T - light grassy start, some nice acidic fruit notes, quite similar to sauvignon blanc notes. Pear and grape notes, rich malt flavour as well, slightly bready and crisp, rich, with some of the silky florals coming in and then it gets rich and fruity toward the finish with really pleasant drying fruity/spice. Just enough sweetness, and a creamy textured mouthfeel.

M - good effervescence, and a robust body but not overly assertive, it is very refreshing and the alcohol is not very detectable, it certainly has a satisfying nature to it.

Lovely saison, full of wonderful florals aromas, great flavour with a bright and slightly acidic palate, lots of crisp floral and fruit notes with a rustic maltiness. Very satisfying, yeast notes are well balanced.

Bottle dated 11/17/2014. Served at cellar temps in a tulip glass.

Appearance: pale gold with a bright and bubbly head that sank to a thin wisp of bubbles on the edges of the glass. Very clear and bright. Nice looking farmhouse ale.

Nose: Belgian candi sugar, Belgian saison yeast, bright citrus aroma with lemons, limes and a slight orange. The hops are still present even after a few months in the bottle.

Taste: citrus hops bomb! Round and full flavored, crisp and very refreshing. The Belgian yeast did its job and made this a very classic and enjoyable saison. Dry, crisp and slightly bitter finish.

Overall: outstanding farmhouse ale. The dry hopping is a great addition and makes for a very bright and wonderful beer. I found these for $6.99 with a buy one get one free offer at a local shop in Buffalo, NY. What a steal at $3,50 for a bomber of fantastic saison.
