Bretta RoséBretta Rosé
Notes: Thirty miles north of Barrelworks lies the fertile Santa Maria Valley. Its warm days and cool marine layer-fed evenings allow for a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables to be grown in its rich soil. One of Santa Maria’s crown jewels is locally grown raspberries. We jumped at the opportunity to ferment fresh local raspberries with one of our Barrelworks creations. Behold Bretta Rosé! A low-alcohol Berliner Weisse style ale, acidified and matured in French oak puncheons for 6 months, is the foundation for this gem. Add 1000 lbs. of fresh raspberries, allow a secondary wild fermentation for 4 more months and voila (!), we have a crisp effervescent concoction, bursting with raspberry perfume and flavor, a rosé color, bracing acidity, and a clean and refreshing finish.

The only beer of the entire Barrelworks collection where my wife told me to get more.

375ml bottle $12.99 batch three from February of 2016. Bright pink color, almost no head at all, looks kind of still. Aroma is this real nice tart raspberry and brett aroma. Flavor is delicious, barely sour, very well defined raspberry flavor, like munching on one, they must have used a decent amount or they just know how to capture the essence. I have not paid enough attention to Firestone's barrel aged wild ales but they are top notch.

Thanks to rudzud for sharing.

Small fizzy head notes, hint if lacing that fades quickly, slight pinkish golden straw color.

Nose is exploding with raspberries and tart Brett funk, big raspberry out front, with nice Brett funk and lots of nice lacto funk. Flash of strawberry, over ripe seedy soaked into the earthy strawberry, very bright fruit and sour funk, lots of seed and stem tannins, with a faint touch of oaky barrel. Light acetic acid with all the great funk.

Taste is again loaded with fresh raspberry, fresh fruity and seed stem tannin notes, etc. Into big barrel, vanilla toasted oak in the front this time. Nice sour lacto as well, acetic acid, tart fruit, and even a mild Brett funk with lambic style sourness. Mild vinous notes, tart fruit, etc. Finish is sticky little flemmy tart sour fruit feel, mild dried lactose feel too, long lingering tart fruit and fresh raspberry.

Mouth lighter bod but not bad, decent but lighter carb.

Overall awesome and fantastic!

Shared with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice light hazy pink straw hue with a thin head that faded to leave a light halo and thin wisps.

S - Aromas of raspberries, brett, sour tartness, great awesome lacto notes, earthy over route strawberry, great brett, awesome raspberry seed. Killer nose, not a fruity raspberry but still on the plant.

T - Taste is nicely tart raspberry, great oaky vanilla. Faint malts, More awesome brett, funk, faint smartie candy notes, really awesome lacto. Lambicus acid, missing that nice raspberry stem and seed that the nose had. Still, this is delicious.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, clean, typical for the style.

O - Overall this was pretty freakin awesome beer, great raspberry notes and awesome funk and lacto, incredibly.

This one pours a nice dark pinkish, almost red, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.

This one smells to raspberry high heaven, delicious, and super aromatics in raspberry, and lemon, with just a hint of funk.

This is such a nice expression of funky, juicy raspberry. It's fairly tart, but not overwhelmingly so. There's lot of juicy raspberry, you almost feel like you have to pick the seeds out of your mouth. It's not all just raspberry, though, there is some nice lemony funk, too. It's super refreshing.

This is lighter bodied, with a juicy and acidic mouthfeel, and a good level of carbonation.

Really, really enjoyable stuff, and gorgeous to look at.

top notch stuff right here, but these guys almost never miss, especially with the wild stuff. the color is awesome, half way between pink and red, electric and bright, with a bubbly head three inches tall from the tap, but only a little pink. it smells really acidic, and tastes far more sour than expected for what i though was supposed to be a brett only beer until i just read the description. the fact that is a berliner as a base makes a lot of sense, obviously its a wheat base, but the acidity is now explained! good. the fruit is radiant in the nose, both sweet and tart, but clearly at the peak of ripeness. up there with atrial in terms of use of raspberry in beer. its genuine in the taste too, right off the pricker bush. right as the fruit starts to fade out in the taste with that mouthwatery i need another thing, the brett kicks in, pushing up through the lactic acidity just enough to add some woody musty funk to the very last essence of this before its gone. i like its late and subtle appearance, and i like how well it dries out the fruit sweetness but preserves the flavor so well. really tremendously high quality beer, i have been so impressed with this series, but this one stands above the rest for me. worth seeking out, even at a considerable cost.

June 20th, 2015 - The Bretta Rose is a nice gem in Toronado's menu, a beautiful pomegranate and ember color. The aroma is bright and springy with some sweet watermelon, fresh raspberry, cotton candy, and deep cherry scents, like a fancy, cherry jubilee. The flavor is much more sour, beginning with a sample of pomegranate, and blossoms, ramping up in acidity on a linear scale. But even at its peak, the sourness is brilliantly balanced, with a nice acidic burn all the way through. Layers of watermelon and sour barrel come in with some white wine vinegar and what seems like chardonnay. The taste is bright and one sip goes a long way, though the aftertaste is relatively short.

L - hazy pink with orange hues around the edges with a medium white head that dissipates quickly
S - Crisp raspberries, brett funk, earthy notes and some hints of strawberries.
T - Follows the nose with crisp raspberries up front followed closely behind with notes of brett funk, and some hints of strawberries and earthy notes.
F - light to medium bodied with a moderate to heavy amount of carbonation. Crisp.
O - I typically can take or leave this style of beer, but this one is hands down one of the best I've had. Such a great surprise and well worth trying and definitely one I'd revisit.

A: Poured into a tulip glass to a pinkish orange topped by a dense two finger white head which fades slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of huge juicy raspberries with a little sourness.
T: Taste is some nice sourness with a lot of juicy raspberries along with a slight creamy wheat flavor. Swallow is a little more wheat and some lingering sourness with some remaining notes of raspberries.
M: The beer has a moderate amount of body. Carbonation is effervescent but not prickly while the beer has a drying finish due to the acidity.
O: Overall this one is fantastic. Really nice raspberry flavors with a real nice sourness along with the rest of the notes that I'd expect from a quality berliner. This id definitely one to try if you can find it and like the style.

Bottle from the brewery in Paso Robles, CA.
Pours a clean ruby pink with a fluffy finger of white head, excellent lacing, smells like fresh cut grass, sour raspberry purée, tootsie roll pop sweetness, taste is tart frutti di bosco with hints of concord grape, pomegranate, and sherry that lingers, this beer is light and creamy with a mildy sticky finish. A complex fruity sour raspberry liquid tootsie roll pop. Ymm.
