Perhaps it was a way to motivate us into producing beer, or maybe it was a desperate hint at a Birthday gift. Either way, David Walker cornered us one day and asked for a sour cherry fermented beer for his 50th birthday. Nothing more was said, but we took note and the opportunity to create something new. On the occasion of David’s golden jubilee, we celebrate his mid-life mortality check with Walker’s Krieky Bones! This beer begins its life as a Flanders Red style beer aged eight months in a 2200 gallon French Oak Foeder, sour cherries were added and allowed a secondary fermentation. The aroma is of cherry pie complete with flavors of piecrust and spicy notes. Vienna malt notes give way to assertive acidity and firm carbonation to finish. A santé and happy 50th birthday David!

Batch 5, bottled 10/18/18

I picked this one up on a whim while in Chicago despite the fact I was shopping for mostly Chicago beer. Evidently I’ve had it marked as a want for a long time, so I’m happy to finally make early 2019 me proud. Let’s pop it open and see what it’s all about

Pours a murky light reddish brown with a finger of off white head that quickly fades to a ring and leaves minimal lacing

There’s a lovely balance of tart fruit and spices on display in the nose. I’m picking up on aromas of tart cherry, brown sugar, cinnamon, dark bread, vanilla, smooth oak, lemon zest, red wine vinegar, cherry pit, and light apple skin

Things take a sweeter turn in taste, and it helps to balance things even further. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting tart cherry, brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, dark caramel, vanilla, smooth oak, dark bread, lemon zest, and tannic red wine. The swallow brings notes of black cherry, dark bread, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, toasted oak, raisin, lemon zest, and nutmeg

A light medium body pairs with aggressive carbonation, resulting in a sharp beer. Finishes bone dry and refreshing

Damn, this is good stuff. Just so nicely balanced with the sweetness. I might have to grab more on the off chance I see it locally

Bottled June 19, 2017.

Quite the battle to remove the cork. An aggressive pour resulted in....nothing. This is a still beer at this point. Still maintains an attractive ruby color that lets some light shine through. Aroma has degraded. It's musty, and that's about all I can say about it. As far as taste, the cherries have somehow survived, and maybe even thrived. Clear cherry taste, and it doesn't have that cough syrup artificiality that you sometimes get. It's one dimensional at this point, but that's my fault for waiting so long to drink it. Overall, still drinkable, but a mistake on my part to not have enjoyed this one years ago.

Now, that is what I call sour. It didn't have the most enticing aroma, but it tastes incredible. Fantastic tart cherry and raspberry flavors, nice zestiness layered on top of the oakiness from the barrels,, with a little maltiness to smooth it out.

Amazing. Funky, sour, fruity, tart, boozy. Everything I want from a barrel aged wild ale. George Clinton drops this beer off singing “gotta have that funk” and I tell him thank you.

Bottled 06/29/17. Nice pop, pours pinkish orange, with a dense white head. Smells tart, vinous, plenty of cherry. Definitely some acidity in the throat, but nicely soft flavours. Cherries, peach, some light tannins. Very nice balance, light and refreshing.

375ml Bottled: 09/26/16 - Batch: No. 003

Pours a cloudy hazy dark scarlet orange red color with a small creamy frothy off-white foam head that sticks around for a little while. Smells real funky right now with moderate fresh sour cherry fruitiness, some oak foeder, bready toasty caramelized malt, a hint of lemon acidity, mild acetic vinegary red wine, some barnyard horse blanket, musty hay, straw, a touch of leather, sweet pie spice, and light floral earthy herbal hops. Tastes like beautifully balanced fresh tart cherries, pie crust, bready toasty caramelized malts, oak foeder, sweet cinnamon-esque spice, a hint of lemon, cherry cider, mild barnyard hay, straw, a touch of leathery phenol, and light floral earthy herbal hop notes. Feels medium bodied, fairly juicy and smooth with drying moderate crisp carbonation. Really well balanced flavor and acidity, easy to drink and refreshing, finishing dry leaving me reaching for another sip. Overall this is a really great kriek wild ale fermented with sour Montmorency cherries in oak foeders.
