Notes: Our Velvet Merlin oatmeal stout has been transformed into a mindblowing mouthful known as Nitro Merlin Milk Stout. The new ingredient is lactose, a.k.a. milk sugar. When Velvet Merlin is brewed with milk sugar to create Nitro Merlin Milk Stout, the effect is similar to adding cream to your dark roasted coffee. The wizardry comes via “nitro,” the brewing nickname for nitrogen gas.

12oz can poured into a pint

A- aggressive pour produces a huge frothy silky khaki colored head that has long retention

S- roasted malt gives some nutty aromas, along with chocolate, some vanilla cream-like milk sugars and undertones of coffee

T- chocolaty roasted malt is balances by a lactose sweetness that mimics vanilla cream & provides a nice balance to the roast. The finish brings undertones of coffee milk a sweet chocolaty linger

M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a silky mouthfeel that continues into a velvety finish

O- plenty of flavor, well balanced and super drinkable, would definitely drink again

Beautiful. Bubbles, thick silky tan bubbles. The crescendo of guiness on draft in a can! But it didn't last.

So much vanilla on the nose with heavy cream and a small amount t of milk chocolate

Tasty combination of creamy chocolate milk and a frothy latte with very little coffee.

Residual sweetness is a little too hefty at the end.

I can't help compare this to guiness being a nitro stout. This brew is superior in every way save for too much sweetness on the finish.

Can poured aggressively into Guinness glass. This one doesn't look or feel as good as Guinness (way less nitro action in glass), but taste is velvety smooth with nice sweet finish. Enjoyable for what it is.

Poured HARD into tall Deschutes glass. Creamy head of 3 fingers, nice cascading movie going on in my glass as the light browns mix into tans and finally into dark brown.

Aroma is of oats, chocolate candy, slight molasses.

This stout is ultra smooth. An oat presence is met with smooth dark chocolate and lactose sugars. Spiced plum, anise, and metallic caramel corn follow faintly.

Feel is silky smooth with just the right amount of carbonation. Nice roasty, dry finish.

Overall, a very good nitro stout that you should try at least once. It's not jaw-dropping, but it is very enjoyable.

Firestone Walker Brewing Co. "Nitro Merlin Milk Stout
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON 12/21/17 15:44" and sampled on 05/31/18
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: So is this just Velvet Merlin done up with notrogen and changed from oatmeal stout to milk stout? Hmmmm. It's nicely chocolatey and roasty in the nose. It's not harsly roasty, but more smouldering or ashy. Very nice. It's not the boldest aroma I've ever smelled in a beer but it more than gets the job done. Very nice. It's nutty as well. And it looks great. It's an opaque black beneath a creamy tan head. As might be expected, the head retention is really good, and I'm assuming the lacing will be as well but right now I've got to taste it... wow, that's nice! It's got chocolate and roastiness, but also sweet malt that makes it come off like a chocolate covered espresso bean. But there's more, it's nutty. That's part of the coffee bean thing, but then it lingers with some sweet, seemingly caramelish malt in the finish as well. And to top that off there's some minor fruitiness to it, that I guess is like red berries. So, to answer my original question, no, this is not just Velvet Merlin done up with nitrogen, it's an entirely different beer. It's rounder and smoother, and seemingly less bitter. In the mouth it's remarkably smooth with a medium-light but dextrinous body and soft, fine-bubbled carbonation. Really nicely done all around. Quite a treat!

Poured from 12 oz can into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours a nice deep black with beautiful 2 inch thick, creamy light tan head courtesy of the nitro. Excellent retention.
S: Smooth dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, and cream.
T: Follows aroma fairly closely...smooth dark chocolate, dark roast coffee with cream, and smooth grain (oatmeal).
M: Light-medium body. Thick, creamy, and viscous feel. Darkly sweet. Lingers a bit on the palate too which is a bonus.
D: A nice solid example of style. Appearance is near perfection. I'm still tickled by nitro cans (or bottles for that matter).

LOOKS: Black with a large tan head that sticks around, and leaves a nice lacing.
AROMA: Dark and milk chocolate, coffee.
TASTE: Bittersweet chocolate, a bit of coffee, mild bitterness.
FEEL: Mildly creamy, dries up a bit on the finish, and your typical nitro feel.
OVERALL: A bit more flavorful than your standard Guinness.

Handy instructions on the side of the can call for the surge pour. Invert 3X..pour hard. I do and it’s all good.

Attractive pour- Black with mahogany highlights, tan 1/2 inch of foam that’s thick and creamy, persists for along time, cascading bubbles.

Smells of roasted lightly charred malt/oats/biscuits, faintly chocolate and lactose sweetness.

Smooth and creamy texture, lightly sweet right away but quickly balanced with char/roasted characteristics including malt, oats, crackers, faint coffee, biscuit; finishes with faintly lingering char, marshmallow and chocolate tones.

Creamy and delicious, this milk stout’s sweetness is well balanced against the roasted/toasted qualities. Not sure if it’s the oats or the nitro, or both, contributing to the velvety texture, but it’s quite nice.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The stout pours a beautiful black color with the white nitro foam cascading up through the brew. Once settled, a big thick white foam head was floating atop the beer remaining there for quite some time, and only very slowly fading to leave rings of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the brew was strong of a roasted malt smell mixed with other aromas of a big and sweet cappuccino smell. Along with these aromas comes a good showing of oatmeal and a little bit of caramel giving it a delicious oat latte like smell overall.

Taste- The taste begins with a smooth roasted and oatmeal flavor with tons of sweet latte tastes. As the taste moves forward the oat becomes even more pronounced with a light fading of the lactose sweetness and a bit more roast taking its place. While the sweet lactose fades a bit it still is rather strong toward the end and with some smooth

Mouthfeel – Being a nitro pour the brew is thick and creamy with a smooth feel. For the rich dark flavors of the brew the feel is fantastic, enhancing the smooth and roasty oatmeal and latte tastes while coating the mouth to produce a rich creamy feel.

Overall – The nitro tap mixed with the lactose sweetness is where it’s at for this brew. This brew is far tastier on nitro tap then from a bottle and if you can get it on tap be sure to do so.

Poured from a tap at the ]e Bier Baron, DC, it was a dark brown with two finger tan head and a full minute of additional bubbles rising in the pint glass. Aroma of rich malt and a full mouth taste of hearty malt with slight but undeniable sweetness. The flavors had "sustain" after swallowing without wateriness.

Pours a deep black with the cascading head forming into a two finger thick light tan color. Nose is light, cream and roasted malts. Taste is dark chocolate, coffee, cream, roasted malts. Essentially similar to a coffee with cream. Rich, soft, and creamy feeling in a medium-light body. Simply delicious beer, excellent feel, good flavor.
