Luponic Distortion: Revolution No. 004Luponic Distortion: Revolution No. 004
Notes: Firestone Walker’s Luponic Distortion revolving hop series reaches firmly into the Southern Hemisphere with the release of Revolution No. 004 this month—a mind-bending mix of seven different hop varieties, led by a pair of experimental South African hops. Four South African hops take the lead in Revolution 004. Two are experimental hops with pronounced tropical fruit qualities, along with distinct white grape and floral notes. The third hop presents a lively passion fruit character, while the fourth is more classically noble in profile.

A crystal clear honey in color with some medium sized bubbles rising. A finger plus of white soapy head that slowly fades to a ring. Leaves some soapy, spotty lacing behind. Nice dose of tropical fruits in the aroma with a biscuit like malt, just a wee bit of astringency. The flavor is again very tropical, and also white grape like, and just a bit of a caramel malt. Quite dry, medium thin body, and average carbonation. I like this one, it's a bit different than the usual citrus and pine I'm so used to.

Possibly my favorite of the rotation so far. I did not try number one, but 003 was measurably close in enjoyability.

L: Very translucent, slightly orange-tinted yellow body with a white head that leaves sparse watercolor-shaped lacing.

S: A truly delightful smell to this one, opening with white grape and peach, closing with lemon and mango. Very clean, very nice.

T: Immediately sweeter than its tart nose suggests, this one has an apricot and peach flavor up front that divulges into passion fruit and mango, with a hint of cantaloupe. Finish is all pine. Nothing special, but probably the most tropical and complex example from the series so far.

F: Very carbonated and a little dry and thin. Watery. Not impressed.

O: A good beer. Better than 9 out of 10 beers available on the current market. I would buy this as an offering for general hop fans who come by for a visit.

Can from Beermongers.

A clear gold with a dense, off-white head, this looks like most other beers in the series. This time around, the nose has an herbal character to go with the tropical fruit. There's some grapefruit, passionfruit, floral herbs, a touch of pine, and, as always, minimal malt. The palate opens mildly bitter with a blend of pine and tropical fruit, with some grapefruit and mandarin tossed in for good measure, It does seem a little disjointed, though - there's arguably too much going on here. The mid-palate brings out more fruit, with a little melon, a moderate amount of passionfruit, some green grapes and maybe some mango before a long, bitter, dry and mildly resiny finish. Strangely, though, there's a period where this does taste a little watery before the bitterness kicks in. Mildly disappointing stuff, this.

12 oz can poured into a shaker pint.

Appearance
Blonde with 1 finger of creamy white head. Crystal clear with light carbonation.

Nose
White grape, kiwi-strawberry, mango, papaya, pineapple, and dank.

Taste
White grape, gooseberry, and hints of kiwi-strawberry. Mango, papaya, and dank greens. Firm biscuity malts help to balance it out. Finishes with pine sap, a mild earthiness, and perhaps a touch of soap.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, crisp, oily, and semi-juicy with a medium-light bitterness.

Overall
The South African hops are similar to NZ hops in nature. Another nice entry in the Luponic Distortion series.

From a month-old can and on tap, pours a clear, pale gold with a finger of bright white foam. Not getting much on the nose, maybe a little fruit and dank. Taste is kind of unremarkable. Just a very middle of the road beer--not much to distinguish it.

bottle to snifter.

Imperssive despite following an excellent Tired Hands APA (hop hands).

LOOK: Beer. white over yellow.
AROMA: Lightly fruity, with lighter notes of pine.
TASTE: cereal, citrus, pine,
FEEL: Above average carbonation. Light body.

Pretty good. Been awhile since i had the 002 and 003, but I want to say this is in between the two of them taste wise.

Pours a foggy straw color with a finger of white head. Head retention is good, with lacing only at the start of the glass. Aroma is light bodied, but packed with hop notes. Notes include citrus, fruits, and a sliver of pine. Flavor profile follows suit with the aroma, with light bodied notes of citrus, fruits, and a tiny pinch of pine. Mouth feel is crisp, with a medium-thin consistency. Overall, another solid showcase of hop qualities done by the Luponic Distortion series. This one feels a little heavier then previous editions, but continues to deliver well developed notes across the board.

Served in a 12oz snifter.

Almost everything these two guys make is orgasmic. The color of a lager, but a good head. Long-lasting and pillowy. It feels like you are sucking on a big grapefruit. An excellent example of the best beer America can make.

Pours a clear straw color with a white head. Very clear, looks like a pilsner. Smells like fruit with a little dankness. The taste is of some stone fruit (much less than previous iterations) and white wine notes. There's a slight grassy bitterness at the end. Feel is good. Overall, another very good entry into the series and the white wine notes added a pleasant depth to this easy-drinking hoppy beer.

Poured from 12oz short bottle into Dimpled Mug. Bottled on November 9th 2016.

L: Clear honeyed bronze, two finger width off white head. Good lacing.

S: Citrus, pine and herbal hops. Balanced well with malts.

T: Follows the nose very closely, tropical citrus hops, like orange peel and almost mango. Touches of pine and herbal hops as well. Good malt backbone that wrestles with the hops well.

F: Light body and crisp. Very refreshing.

O: Great beer.
