Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.90%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Revolution No. 005 is driven by a mix of five different hop varieties, led by an emerging American cultivar from the Yakima region. Together, these hops deliver a complex spectrum of ripe tropical fruit aromas with notes of guava, mango, pineapple, orange, blackberry, green tea and Meyer lemon. In true Luponic Distortion fashion, bitterness is moderate but snappy, with a balance of light malty-bready sweetness and a soft mouthfeel.

Bottled on date of 02/16/17

Appearance - Pours clear with a white, quarter-finger width head that displays sub-par retention, resulting in a thin, broken head and a fair ring around the edge of the glass. Not much for lacing; just a few spots here and there.

Smell - Light citrus. A hint of peppery spice and some crackery malts. Some grassiness and a hint of hay.

Taste - Follows the nose. The general strength of flavor is moderate, with some citrus and some woody undertones. Bready notes. Finish is balanced with lingering citrus sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with fair carbonation. Slick texture with a semi-dry finish.

Overall - It's okay. I'll finish the sixer and move on. I feel like this series has been hit and miss. This one is a definite miss; maybe the weakest of the series.

12 oz bottle, bottled on 4/19/17. Pours clear straw gold with a medium fluffy white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet fruity floral hops and bready malt.

The flavor is sweet bready cracker malts with some soft fruity floral hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a decent IPA.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz can into a standard pint glass. It has the abv listed at 5.9% and it has "canned on" date of 01/31/17.

Appearance: The body has a light yellow color with good clarity and a nice bright white cap of foam. The head hangs on well and lacing is good.

Smell: The aroma is very inviting brings loads of nice lemony citrus and pineapple notes.

Taste / Palate: Loads of pineapple, lemon rind and unripe peach hop flavor. Malt flavor is light and crisp with kind of a cracker/biscuity taste that allows the hops to really shine.

12oz can, New Belgium glass, canned 2/9/17.

This is a lighter hued IPA with a healthy white head.

Fruity nose with peach, pineapple, lemon, and lychee.

Milder flavors; slight apricot, grapefruit pith, papaya, low bitterness. The malt bill is unobtrusive; not too dry, not sweet or juicy, with a little mustiness.

Light to medium bodied with a good crisp carbonation.

I was delighted to find this limited release at Temura's, one of Hawaii's finest liquor stores, recently. It scratches my and I think many craft beer fan's itch of experimentation. We're often after something new. It's a slightly different IPA than you might expect to showcase hops because they aren't in your face or exceptionally bitter, but it is well crafted.

Firestone Walker Brewing Co. "Luponic Distortion - Revolution No. 005"
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON 02/24/17" and sampled on 06/05/17
$9.99/six-pack @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

I'm a little late on picking up the No. 005 but I think it'll be OK.

The appearance is similar as expected. I assume they're just changing the hops each time.

Big, floral and tropical aroma. I can't recall the name of the specific flower that I'm thinking of but it's soft, it's not a sharp or very distinctive flower (I know that's not very helpful at all, sorry, it will come to me later). Initially I also got what I thought of as peach but I'm not finding that so clearly now. Ah, it's still there. Papaya, mango, soft pineapple, and some grass, pine, and earth round it out. Are there berries? I think yes, and some apple.

The flavor follows but it's bigger and more complex as usual. I'm getting papaya, guava, some orange, and soft lemon zest. The balance remains as it has in the previous incarnations, and it finishes with some lingering pine once the tropical fruits have mostly faded.

I'm sure I could tell them apart if you gave them to me side by side, but at this point I couldn't really tell you how numbers 003 through 005 truly differ without looking up my notes as they seem to be very much in the same vein. Despite having said that, I really like this one, and I'm glad I bought a six-pack. It's a little softer and smoother than the others if I recall correctly, and more floral. It's really nicely rounded, and incredibly easy to drink - or is that a fault? Should it have more edge? Nah, I'll take it as it is, and I'm looking forward to number 006 which should be out any day.

I'm a huge FW fan, but truth be told I don't love the Luponic series. This one was nice but did nothing to change my mind. Definitely a pretty thing in the glass, golden body, brilliantly clear, thick foamy cap. Nose of pineapple and honeysuckle. Palate is bitter, like so many of these Revolutions, and, paired with the too-slimmed-down-for-my-liking body, it just doesn't showcase the hops enough, IMO. It's a perfectly fine beer, nothing you'd be sad to be offered, but I think I may be done with the Luponics. No matter, a fridge full of Union Jack, Pale 31, DBA, and Pivo is happy thing indeed.

Appearance: Clear straw yellow color with a moderate-sized white head that gradually faded. A nice looking IPA.

Smell: Tropical fruit notes dominate with some mild piney hop aromas also making an appearance.

Taste:The tropical fruit notes are most apparent but some mild pine notes are also present. There are some mild floral notes also in the taste profile. just like 004 the bitterness is soft and subdued and the beer finish ends with some mild fruit notes.

Mouth-feel: The body is on the light side of medium-bodied.with a medium level of carbonation.

Overall: like the 004 vintage this is a good IPA that is very drinkable and tasty. Not an IPA with huge hop presence dominating the nose and taste but a beer you could drink more than one with ease.
