Mind HazeMind Haze
Notes: From the coast of California comes Mind Haze, a free-spirited beer made to elevate your perceptions—juicy yet balanced, hazy yet lasting, and loaded with an imaginative array of tropical hop flavors.

In the words of Brewmaster Matt Brynildson, “Mind Haze offers the best of what you expect from a hazy IPA. But we’re going about it a little differently, and that’s what gives Mind Haze its own unique signature. We’re finally ready to do a hazy IPA the Firestone way.”

MALTS: 2-Row, White Wheat, Torrified Wheat, Munich, Golden Naked Oats

HOPS: Kettle: Cashmere, Mandarina. Dry Hop: El Dorado, Idaho 7, Azacca, Mosaic, Cashmere

12oz can, tulip, canned on 1/31/20.

Hazy, quite yellow, low volume of head, but it's there in a white persistent ring.

Chalky, tropical, those hard banana candies, mango. Lots of mango. Traces of alcohol as it warms.

The impression is tropical, again with lots of mango and a bit of spice in the finish. Rubber cement in the mid palate and alcohol again rears its head.

It's effervescent, yet has a bit of a matte or chalky feeling from the yeast.

Canned 1/3/19, consumed 1/17/19

Decent hazy from FW. Good, bright juicy aroma. Taste is a different fruit profile from the aroma but still decently juicy. Feel is a bit light, quite thin, ok smooth but not creamy. Doesn't stand up to the feel of the better hazies out here.

Hazy yellow colored beer with a small white colored head.

Smells extremely hoppy. Intense scent of pineapple and passion fruit. Strong citrus aroma, lemon, orange and grapefruit. Lesser scent of cedar wood. Smells a bit sweet but no particular malt type.

Starts out Tasting strongly of citrus peel. Citrus fruit after taste. High carbonation level. Taste of mint. Slight taste of burned sugar. Mild sweetness. Overall a mild citrus flavored ale.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall it is very tasty. A beer for those who like citrus flavored ales.

Can dated 01/05/19 into a tumbler.

L: Pours opaque hazy brown golden with nearly 2 fingers of medium-density white frothy head with good retention and left ringed and spotted lacing.

S: Pleasant tropical nose with subtle earthy and pine undertones. Mango, pineapple and guava in the lead, perhaps some hints of honeydew melon.

T: Follows the nose well, but a bit less dynamic, more noticeable lime than on the nose. Finishes with slight bitterness, and hints of acidity, clears the palate quickly and crisply.

F: Low-medium bodied with moderate carbonation, silky on the tongue and swallow.

O: Feels and tastes more like a hybrid than a true NEIPA. Not reading the label I'd peg this as a modern tropical unfiltered APA. A nice beer, that I'll happily have again especially in warmer temperatures.

Look: Mildly hazy and pale gold, a shade darker than a pilsner, far from the orange shades favored by breweries like The Veil or Tree House. It's not a milkshake/gravy level of hazy; it's closer to hefe level haziness. Persistent, rocky white head.

Smell: Pleasantly fruity, with notes of melon and lime. Even at a month old, the aroma really pops. The talent and scale economies at Firestone Walker seem to have done wonders for eliminating dissolved oxygen from their canned beers.

Taste: Melons, mangos, limes, oh my! The mango becomes more noticeable as the beer warms and towards the finish.

Feel: More breweries need to copy this. It's crisp and dry, but still has a full mouthfeel. The yeast/hop fruitiness adds a perception of sweetness, but with the dryness of a west coast IPA. Outstanding.

Overall: I tend to be skeptical of New England IPAs from breweries other than those that specialize in the style (The Veil, Ocelot, The Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, etc.), and with good reason. They are almost always an unpleasant combination of cloyingly sweet, chalky, bland, and bitter (I'm looking at you, Collective Arts, Solace, and Commonwealth). This, by contrast, it vibrant, fruity, and very well-balanced. It's threatening to become a regular in my fridge.

Pours a hazy darkish yellow color with a finger width foamy head. Head retention and lacing are both very good. Nice citrus aroma. Somewhat juicy. Some pine. I thought I could get a little bit of tobacco initially, but then it was gone. Less juicy taste. More watered down citrus with a decent bitterness. Some piney resin. Dry on the end. Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

I dont necessarily dislike NEIPAs, I just more often than not dislike NEIPAs I try. Every now and then one I find one I enjoy, but never love. Having said that...

L - Looks less appalling than most per style. It doesnt look like pulpy orange banana pineapple juice I drank from concentrate when I was nine years old. Do a 4 on appearance per style is quite high for me here.

S - Smells like orange banana pineapple juice from concentrate that I drank when I was nine years old.

T - Watery and acidic. Extremely low on flavor other than a fruitiness combined with a metallic sensation akin to licking a penny.

F - thin, watery, fizzy. Like a very highly carbonated water bursting with bubbles of lacking any substantial viscosity.

O - what a joke. I cant believe how popular this style is. A neipa is like a chicken nugget. Easily palatable to a fussy 5 year old. I'll take the filet mignon cooked rare please instead. Oh, and waiter please get me a 16oz head hunter.

A: Hazy gold with rich foamy head and abundant lacing.
N: Citrus, malt, tropical notes, and some wheat/oat.
T: Follows the nose, decent citrus feel with some mild tropical notes. A soft chewiness and light bitterness.
M: Light medium, slight bitterness.
O: It was ok to me but not really what I consider a true NEIPA. The feel was off and flavors a little underwhelming.

LOOKS: Opaque, apricot, with a white foam that lasts, and leaves a moderate lacing.
AROMA: Ripe tropical and citrus fruit.
TASTE: Ditto and some white cracker bread, too.
FEEL: About average carbonation, dry, and medium body.
OA: Reminds me a little bit of SN 'HLT,' just doesn't have quite as much of an 'over-ripened' fruit quality. That might be a good thing, depending on who you ask.

Hazy pale yellow gold with a dense creamy white foam head. Hoppy citrusy tropical berry aroma with grainy notes and a soft touch of earthy spice. Tastes pretty clean and refreshing with notes of lemon, white grapefruit, orange citrus, pineapple, papaya, tropical notes, berry, with a touch of grainy malts and earthy spice. Medium bodied, smooth and creamy. Overall a really nice smooth hazy IPA.

From a fresh growler, pours a hazy bright orange. Big white foamy head. Smell initially is dank and earthy, but quickly moves to intense mandarin orange, fresh orange slices and grapefruit. Taste follows. Feel is super soft but a little thin. Almost zero bitterness. Excellent beer.
