Pours an unremarkable light caramel with a small head and little lacing. Aroma and flavor are bourbon, oak, vanilla, caramel, and remarkably little booze for the 13.5% abv. Very drinkable.

2018 on draft, dark, alcoholic, solid barley wine. Glad I tried it on draft to compare to the bottle I’ll open in a year or so.

Tons of coconut on the nose. Not too syrupy and a dry finish. Good balance of hops On the backend.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Snifter glass. 2018 vintage.

L: Cloudy brown, thin khaki head has little retention.

S: Dark fruit, plum, apricot, fig, caramel, toffee, vanilla, bourbon.

T: Dark fruit is the main presence here, very rich and tasty, smooth caramel and toffee notes with nice vanilla from the bourbon. Excellent.

F: Medium body, crisp, lingering vanilla.

O: Magnificent.

Finally getting to try one of Firestone Walker's BA brews! I've also got a Parabola. Even more excited for that one, but I love a good Barleywine too.

L: This is beautiful. Not much head, as is expected, but dark ruby is an excellent description of the body color. Transparent, with a rich red glow in direct light. Otherwise, it appears dark brown.

S: Tons of molasses, raisins, prunes, booze, leather, vanilla, chocolate, toffee, tobacco and malt barley. Smells like a real quality barleywine.

T: Taste follows the nose pretty well. Again, sugar is first, but the bitter kicks in quick. Molasses sweetness, raisins, chocolate, butter, toffee, and vanilla, then that molasses bitterness, followed by a charcoal note and a woody dryness that just barely keeps the finish from being too sweet. That said, I still find it to be a little bit much.

F: Very soft and heavy. The bitterness and dryness help keep it drinkable, but the sweetness lasts just a touch too long, so each sip ends in faint gastric discomfort. Not enough to actually bother me, but enough to notice...

O: I can imagine this style done better. But the thing I'm thinking is that it could use more roast character...which would basically make it closer to a Barrel-Aged Stout? Maybe this isn't a great year for Sucaba. Maybe I just don't really love barleywines. I'll have to try some more to find out.
