Kentucky MuleKentucky Mule
Notes: Our barrel-aged “Cocktail Series” continues with Kentucky Mule – our answer to the classic Moscow Mule cocktail, substituting Russia’s favorite spirit with Kentucky’s finest.

The journey of this beer began when we blended two equal lots of our signature Bravo brown ale and Helldorado blonde barley wine, both aged for 18 months in premium Kentucky bourbon barrels. We then infused this blend with hand-diced Fiji-grown ginger as well as fresh California lime zest and juice, perfectly accentuating the beer’s bourbon-inspired flavors of vanilla and maple syrup. The result is a true Moscow Mule-style sipping experience with a uniquely American twist.

Pours deep brown with very slight fading head from Firestone 12 oz fancy anniversary boxed bottle. Heavy notes of bourbon barrel aged Kentucky whisky ale blended with ginger and lime peel. Flavors of brown ale laced Moscow mule with flavors of lime, ginger, fig, maple syrup and brown sugar. 20 IBU & 11.8% ABV make this a great special occasion barley wine that drinks more like a boozy cocktail. Cheers Firestone - another great brew on steroids.

Firestone Walker Kentucky Mule 2021 American Barleywine, 11.8% ABV. Pours dark brown with a one-finger light-brown head that left no lacing. Nose is ginger, bourbon, and lime. Taste follows, lightly bitter, slightly tart. Decent mouthfeel, perhaps a bit heavy on the carbonation. Overall very good. The lime steals the show as lemon and lime often do if not offset or limited.

Pours an effervescent hazel with rapidly falling beige head. No head retention or lacing

S: Ginger, lime & barrel, great nose

T: Follows the nose with a little Tequilla ( not used in the aging from what I see ), dryness & leafy hops thrown in up front. Cola, lime & ginger flavors as this warms & what now seems more like rum to now once warm. Finishes dry with lime & ginger, some raw barrel & cola notes

MF: Medium body, pretty firm carbonation, warming. Carbonation drops off as this warms up

Drinks alright, you certainly feel the heft on this one

Love the brewery just didn’t love this beer. Thought I would try it based on just the brewery’s name. The bourbon bbl aged I was looking forward to but the ginger and lime peel was the difference maker for me. Ugh! Still glad I tried it and really hoped I would like it especially since I bought TWO. OH WELL! Vintage 2021 pour.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a medium to dark reddish orange with a one finger, off-white head with great retention and good lacing. Aroma of faintly caramel malt, ginger and a touch of bourbon; dominated by ginger. Flavor is pale malt with mild caramel, ginger, lime and bourbon. Medium bodied with light creaminess. I've never had a Moscow Mule, so I can't totally judge veracity here, but this does taste remarkably like what I'd expect a ginger and lime cocktail made with bourbon (rather than the traditional vodka), would taste like. I taste hints of the Helldorado malt, but the malt here is subdued, as expected for the taste they are after. This is not a combination of flavors that I'd expect to get excited about and I'm not sure I'd make this a standard in my rotation, but for a one-off, I like it quite a bit. It reminds me of the Mezcal-Limon I tried last year in the effect of tasting like a cocktail but with some light malt body. A rather gimmicky series, but I've enjoyed them all. Nice job on a challenging idea.

Mostly clear brown pour, no head. Huge lime and oak in the nose, ginger, bright barley, bourbon and toasted caramel support. Taste: HUGE lime and ginger with bourbon booze and oak! I go back and forth, some sips I like the mocktail combo, the next I am reminded this is a barrel aged beer with no semblance of balance. Feel is hot but doesn't burn, again I get that is the design but it is not approachable to the beer drinking palate, thinner body but smooth and refined by the finish. Didn't work for me but can see this one being divisive

Served in a small tulip glass at home. 11.8% ABV. Bottle info – No. 01, Bottle Date – 07/16/2021

A remarkably interesting beer. A complex palate of tastes. Much better beer than its base Helldorado. A beer that does get an A+ for meeting its intended mark – emulating a Kentucky Mule cocktail. An English Barleywine – I disagree with the current BA characterization as an American Barleywine (no hoppiness whatsoever).

A – Pours a clear (almost opaque in the glass), dark reddish brown or amber with a light-brown head, but almost none (-) that dissipates quickly to a ring around the glass. Some carbonation. Viscous on the glass but not leggy. There was a very small amount of sediment in the bottom of the bottle, which did not affect my first pour. 4.0

S – Aroma is dominated by vanilla and brown sugar followed by spirits/bourbon, then a cinnamon-like spiciness and finally some very faint citrus. 4.0

T – A strong ale, malty, but no roastiness or bitterness. Brown sugar sweetness. Lime is present but oddly not as a citrusy taste. More lime than ginger. Barrel flavor is not strong, but the higher ABV is evident. Starts sharp and limey but finishes with a mild sweetness. 4.0

MF – Medium heavy body with a sweet finish balanced by the bite of the lime peel and ginger. A quick finish. Warming in the tummy. 4.0

L - Brown with some clarity with a small offwhite head that dissipates quickly leaving behind no real lacing
S - Tons of bourbon and oak on the nose along with hints of bright, vibrant ginger and lime
T - Follows the nose with bourbon and oak up front and throughout intermixed with ginger and lime - some hints of molasses and caramel as well.
F - Medium bodied with light to moderate amount of carbonation.
O - Definitely went the cocktail route on this one, but its still a very solid beer that hits the flavor profile they were going for

Poured from the bottle into a teku glass. Vintage 2021.

Deep copper rusted red, with a nearly ruby looking body color that's fairly clear to see through. Head creation is about one finger, but with airy consistency, lending to dissolve and with a bit of soapy look to it. Settle to a fairly big bubbled thin collar and soapy ring as well.

The aroma certainly gives to a cocktail angle. Straight up Rose's lime cordial smelling, faint a nice touches of marmalade like fruit and sticky caramel flavors. Hints just a little boozy, like fruited vodka, but nothing fussel or burning. Not much hinting barrel character going on here through all of these other cocktail inspired aromas. Surprisingly not getting ginger off the nose.

Quite in interesting palate. Very light bodied and wet with a mid palate that hits with lime like flavors on first sip. Lots of spicy ginger notes and lime, more like a dark and stormy cocktail flavor. The mouthfeel for even blended barrels is quite wet, but that give it a more cocktail like mixed drink feel. Aftertaste is even a little soda bubbly in feel, and to some degree even gaseous.

It's an angle that delivers, and it has without cocktail quality, however just as a beer in general and particularly one from Firestone with their excellent barrel program, I don't think this really works or makes for a great drinking experience.

Look: It pours brown with a tan head. Head retention is moderately low. It is quite clear.

Smell: It has strong lime and ginger aromas up front with some bourbon and alcohol notes.

Taste: The ginger is the strongest followed by the lime. There are bourbon and caramel flavors as well. The flavors combine with kind of ginger soy finish.

Feel: It has a medium body with strong alcohol warming.

Overall, to me the flavors don't quite mesh together.

Clear red colored ale with next no head formation.

Scents of ginger and lemon. Vanilla and sugar. Smells boozy and spicy. No real bourbon though. Something in this makes me think brown sugar.

Starts out savory. Taste of lemon. Taste of Bourbon, but not strong. Tastes a bit salty. Burn of Ginger. Not that sweet.

Mouthfeel is thick.

Overall, this one doesn't seem to come together.

Brew: Firestone Walker Brewing Co. - Kentucky Mule

Intro: 12 oz. poured into a tulip glass. Shared with a friend.

Appearance: Dark brown, like a dark brewed tea, Moderate head maybe 1 inch. Moderate lacing as I drank

Smell: Ginger and lemon, lime up front with the bourbon barrel bring up the back.

Taste: Followed the smell. Barrel was more prominent in the taste

Mouthfeel: Medium mouthfeel, medium carbonation.

Drink: Went down smooth. Well blended

Conclusion: It was a well crafted beer as one would expect from this brewer. I’m pretty much one and done but happy to have found it and tried it.

Appearance: Pours tea brown with a one finger beige cap which fades to a film while leaving a few streaks behind

Smell: The ginger and lime are distinctive with undertones of caramel, Bourbon and maple syrup

Taste: Layers of flavor with the ginger and lime prominent on the taste buds throughout; caramel and a hint of maple syrup underpins with the Bourbon emerging, in the mid-palate; the finish brings some oak and merges the elements

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation; some warmth in the gullet

Overall: A distinctive mock cocktail that works very nicely

It smells malty then like lime and ginger. There is a backdrop of whiskey but it in no way dominates.

The first thing I taste is lime and ginger. Then I can taste a barrel aged beer but it's like everything is a flavor and nothing is the base.

It has medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. The finish is malt and whiskey first but then the lime and ginger comes in strong. It leaves a burn that feels like the ginger but might be the alcohol.

Overall it's different but definitely good and a beer. I give it a 5.3 out of 6.
